Trailrunner, that's pretty standard, uncomplicated construction. I bet you could find a local carpenter who'd make you one to your personal specifications for a small fraction of what suppliers to the kitchen industry are charging.

Looking at the picture makes me think it is an old farm table that someone added the open shelf and backer piece. (at least the top looks old)

oh rosie I wish. I have had several folks say they would do it...then they carp out on me. I have decided that they want easy jobs with big pay....much like many folks find on the forums these days when they try to get anyone to give an estimate or show up. Hard to understand.

Stephanielynn and jeannie I like both of those. THANK YOU ! I had not seen them before. Napa Style changes their offerings regularly I need to check more often. I like the rectangular one even better than the oval but only one shelf. I do love the rustic look of the thinner work table top in the original post.

trailrunner- I bet you can find a custom furniture maker to do, as rosie said, for a fraction of the cost. I don't mean "folks who said they would do it" either. I am planning a custom table and chairs, and probably island, that will be designed to my specs, for probably half the price of Restoration hardware, for ex., and about 4xs the quality. Keep looking for someone, you'll find someone reputable. Where are you located?

Maybe post on the furniture forum?

I agree that it's a custom piece. It's easy enough for someone good to make a new piece look old but using old wood and/or distressing/finish work.

I know you got a price from my guys and it was a bit high for you, but they do high end furniture quality work. You would be happy with a piece they made.

I recently read a series of posts on apartmenttherapy.com about a couple who commissioned a custom farm table, as well as a headboard and some other furniture, from a furniture maker who mostly uses recycled wood to build farm tables. The finished table is beautiful (if you go to apartmenttherapy.com and search "story of a table" you can see the posts detailing the progress of the construction). I think the furniture maker could easily build your island and the prices don't look too bad. I've included the link below.

Caroline, I answered this question on the decorating forum - just wanted to make sure you saw it. It is really easy to make your own (hey, if I can do it...)

Tablelegs.com was really helpful with making sure I ordered everything I needed and if you do it this way, you can make sure you get the size you need. To make my base the total cost was about $600. This included tools I had to buy that I didn't have (things that most would have in a normal workshop like a small chisel, a square, etc), tax and shipping to get the order into Canada (more than twice what it cost to ship to the states), etc.

Don't want to hijack, but can anyone tell me what kind of faucet that is at the farmhouse sink?

kd: I am pretty positive that is a Chicago Faucet, because I have the same one in a wall mount version, and no one else (that I've seen) makes that double hinged spout. It also has the spoke style handles, instead of the lever handles. They have discontinued most of that vintage looking line (why, why, why?), but if you are interested, you can contact chicagofaucetshoppe.com and probably have them build it up for you. That line, in chrome, was not very expensive (few hundred bucks, depending on how fancy you get with the handles). They have great customer service. I couldn't find the faucet on their website, but they probably still have all the parts/pieces to make it. If you go that route, and you need a photo, I can send it to you.

Given up again budge but thanks for asking :) I had e-mailed the Lorimer people and got a very nice note back and a reasonable 1st estimate. Then I sent him a pic of my kitchen to give an idea of the space and also asked if he had ever used waterlox to finish the surface and told him we are in Alabama....not another word. I think that I have some sort of aura that repulses island builders !

DD was in a hit and run car wreck and the insurance has decided to total her car and are only giving us carp to buy another...so money is very tight at present. So will wait. THANK YOU for thinking of me...c

trailrunner--hope things are well w/ your DD. Not sure if you had located a source for your table/island even though putting on hold. If not, in another posting they linked to www.eddywest.com (sorry, I'm not computer literate). If you go there, click on products, then under work centers--check out the large kitchen island w/ butcher's block, item #37-2345. It also sounds like they will work with customizing.

Carolyn, I sent you an email earlier tonight. Take a look at Eddy West. I first saw their things in TN at an antique store. Well built, gorgeous finishes. Came back and found them carried in Homewood at The Brass Bed (I think, the one that's been there forever near red light when coming into Homewood from Bham on the left). Anyway, lady there told me Eddy West would customize sizes. Their prices are great too.
