Help with a French farmhouse table

noladesign

I bought an 1860's French farmhouse table about 15 yrs ago. The tag say cherry/elm. It is narrow for a dining table and at the time, perfect for a NYC apartment. I now use at as a wide sofa table/desk type space. It had a scratch across it when I bought it and was heavily discounted. As it is rustic that was fine. It now is also splitting it 2 places. It is getting a bit beyond rustic! I thought about having the top clad in zinc or copper. Is that possible, and has anyone done it?
