Mullion doors not lining up with shelves-any suggestions?

Well our cabinets came in and we are unpacking and installing them - We put our glass doors up on our two corner cabinets and they didn't match up with the shelves - lookes strange, like we made a mistake. We've tried to put the shelves into different configurations but without matching up just doesn't look quite right - any suggestions? (Wondering how many other things I didn't think about as we are putting things together!)

Can't you just drill new holes on the sides of the cabinets for the shelf supports? That's what I had to do.

Glass shelves maybe?

Even if wood shelves don't line up, it won't be very obvious if you put a bunch of stuff in there. But if it's for display, glass might be the way to go.

Not sure on the acronym is RFT are we talking RTF (Rigid Thermal Foil) or thermofoil or whatever the next manufacturer is calling it (Kraftmaid calls it laminate?) - who can keep them straight. Bit of a bad word here (which ever one you use) but my Mom used it in her new kitchen and our experience cross shopping product was good - we chose a moulding from another company in the same colour and the match was perfect. I would recommend taking in a door and checking it against a store sample as there is some variation depending on where the manufacturer buys the foil product. You can't cut out door centres with RTF doors the foil will shred so new doors is the way to go. Your other option is to go with unfinished doors (usually also available through the refacing programs at the box stores) and paint match. We took the glass out of a door and used the door to frame an open shelf and where the gasket was to hold the glass was just raw MDF so we just colour matched some paint and applied it. Not as prominent an area as the face of the door but if yout test the sheen it should work. If you order an unfinished MDF door you have to start with an oil based primer to get a smooth finish. I don't really think you can see the area without sticking your head inside the cabinet - anything before where the glass would be is thermo but what's behind it is painted.

I am linking a thread on this same subject; it contains pics which are helpful. There are some differences of opinion there. Also, the lining-up issue may depend upon where you are standing (near, far, off to the side), so the shelves may line up with the mullions at times, but then move a few feet, and it no longer looks lined up. I had this problem in my kitchen too. It drove me so crazy (I am neurotic about things lining up), while it wouldn't bother other people whatsoever. I ended up replacing my 4 mullioned glass cabinet doors for clear glass doors. I had the clear glass edges bevelled for visual interest, but I was glad to do away with the lining-up issue. teacats - I love the dark grey suggestion for the shutters. I tried it on the BM site and it looked very pretty. My landscaping is in process, and am going to have my brother make a deeper wood window box that hangs lower over the edge of the railing - longer and deeper to support plant life. Thanks for the feedback, its good to have a confirmation about the purple. My neighbor's house is green so it will look good with theirs as well. Thanks again! bronwynsmom - I can't wait to start painting - I'm excited about this project! Next spring will be the deck, I have to strip off the old stain first. I really like the deck colors you are suggesting - that will be a huge change, and thanks for the info. on the gray looking brighter and lighter outside - my house faces west so it really has that effect, so glad you mentioned that! I would love to get those ratty looking yews out of there, but I thought I would try drastically pruning them in the dormant season and shaping them into a hedge, same for the boxwoods by the deck - everythings getting cut to a foot and re-shaping to a hedge to ground the house. Part of the plan is to build a lattice screen panel angling out to the left of the yews, paint it white, and grow a flowering vine on it. Thanks so much for the beautiful azela suggestion - if I take out the yews at some point - after my other projects are completed, I will know some beauties to put in! Those are just gorgeous!!! OK, well I think I'd either do 10 lite doors which wouldn't be as busy as 15. Our doors would be WHITE. OR, I do really like either the doors with beveled glass like mpg2004 showed OR, even though Marcolo (whose opinion I respect a lot) says that the leaded glass is off-era, I really love it and wonder if I were to use a silver caming instead of black if that would modernize it a bit? On the Simpson Door site it describes black caming as rustic, old world and the Silver Caming as updated. Our door hardware will also be brushed silver tone. BLACK: SILVER: (but done in a 10 lite or similar door) I think this is silver? I like this too but think with a wider (34") door the look may change...

My glass cab doors with mullions also did not line up: the holes didn't allow me to put the metal pins/pegs holding the shelves at exactly the right height. Drilling right in between both did the trick. Quite an irritation from my standpoint, and quite poor quality-control on the cabinet-mfctr's point.

I will warn my clients about this. It's not a quality control thing when the cabinets are massed produced. They have one machine that drills all the side panels for the holes.

KraftMaid Cabinetry offers 'adjustable shelf clips' for just this situation. I'm not sure how they work, but it gives you more flexibility in aligning your shelves and mullions.

I will usually suggeste a 'mission mullion' so you can place shelves wherever you want.

You might try to order some of the adjustable clips from a Kraftmaid dealer. Or order some online. I found a place that sells something similar...see link below.

FYI...while you will be lining the shelves up for you...they will look misaligned to anyone significantly shorter or taller than you. It's all a matter of perspective. I think the glass shelf suggestion is the best solution all around. If you have lights in your glass-fronted cabinets, glass shelves are doubly recommended!

Our cabinets are Kraftmaid. No lights. I suppose I could drill new holes - I agree Deedee, quite an irritation! These cabinets are corners - 36" the shelves are quite large and than cut at an angle - maybe having the glass cut to size won't be such a big deal? It's just frustrating to continue to "fix" your new things : ) will run all this by my DH - Thanks for all the options - I love you guys - so much help! Will check into the clips too - if they're from KM I can run that by them with the list of other things we have for them to fix with our new cabinets!

The carpenter who installed our cabinets drilled new holes to make the shelves line up. This makes them not adjustable (well, they're still adjustable but not if I want them aligned with the mullions (muntins?)). I like this looks much better.

We did not want glass shelves but wanted our shelves to align with the mullions/muntins. When I mentioned this to the KD he put a note in the installation specs that the adjustable drill holes for the shelves should align according to our preference. It remains to be seen whether or not this will come to pass but for those who are OCD as I am will want to mention your preference for this up front. I was surprised when the KD said a lot of his clients don't care but that he did and didn't think I was completely nuts.

I also found out it depends on your height. If one of you is tall and one is short, they will always look "off" to one of you. The effect is magnafied, however, if the shelves really are "off". So fixing them will help some and at least you can have them look right to your eyes, since it is your kitchen, even they are not perfect to a guest who is 6" taller or shorter! :)

Our Merillat Classic cabinet shelves also didn't line up at first with the mullions on the glass doors. Come to find out the installer had put the shelf clips in upside down. Once changed the shelves lined up perfectly.
