That photo is probably leaded glass. A bit easier to clean but off-era for your house.

There's a world of difference between interior and exterior glass cleaning. I have three sets of interior French doors and they are really not that hard to keep looking good. I am a firm believer in doing a little bit frequently, so I Swiffer the horizontal muntins as often as I can. The actual glass only gets polished once a month. It never seems all that dirty because it's a vertical surface and not a mirror.

Exterior divided light windows and doors are a whole nother ballgame.

marcolo- So are you suggesting just doing the 15 light mullions? What about just clear glass?

There are windows in both rooms behind the doors so with kids fingerprints I'm thinking it may get nuts. lol

we have the prairie style mullions and i really like them. as for cleaning, haven't done that yet! this is a very old pic but you get the idea...

In our last house, we had interior doors with the lites divided in a similar style to the one you posted, but instead of wood mullions & individual glass panes, the grid was created by bevels. This meant the door was a single pane of glass, textured on one side, which made it really easy to clean.

I have the 15 lite Colonial in our home and don't find it hard to clean. I have a squeegee the exact width of the glass panes and it makes it pretty easy.

We just got some Anderson french doors installed as part of our kitchen reno, to go from kitchen to 3 season room. We chose no mullions for our spot. I'd post a photo but just realized the only 'after' so far is one with layers of construction dust and the plastic film still one the doors' glass!
Even with the mullions (we had them in the old door), we had good luck cleaning with glass cleaner and old newspaper. I thought it was just an old wives' tale but DH tried it and now he swears by it.

I doubt the plain glass will get walked into since the doors will still have the wood stiles and rails.

So, the (4) 34" panels in a row is almost 11 1/2 feet of doors.
I'm thinking having all 15 lights may be really busy to look at when closed. I wanted the glass for an open feel and so you can see into the kitchen/DR area.

(Many thought we should just leave the open concept without the doors but we REALLY think the doors will be functional for us to separate the rooms a bit when needed. At one point we were having pocket doors but then we would have less of a view as we would have had to had 3' wall pockets on either side.)

Anyway, I'm leaning towards all glass (no mullions) or maybe the 2 fixed sides could be clear and the center doors have mullions. Usually sidelights are smaller than the center doors but in this case they are all the same. Would it look okay to have the two center be different? The doors will mostly be in the opened position I would think.

Hi 2LittleFishies, I love French doors between rooms! I think your house is going to be lovely. However, unless Andersen has recently started making interior doors, I would not buy an Andersen door for this application. An exterior door isn't going to look right inside your house. There is way too much sill for one thing, and one side will be less refined and will look like it is meant to be exterior.

A better option is to buy interior French doors and the correct bypass sliding door hardware, which will likely consist of a track that goes inside the wall above the door and either a track or a couple of bumpers on the floor to keep the door from swinging out. Your contractor will likely have sources he likes, or if you are doing it yourself there are lots of kits available online and probably at your local stores too though the selection will probably be more limited. Make sure you get one with at least 3 wheels oneach of the pieces that attach to the door itself, and a track that only allows the door to be disengaged at specific locations.

There are other companies that make interior French doors of course, but this one has a lot of options and should at least give you an idea of the range of options available.

I have to smile at your pet peeve AnnieDeighnaugh... that bugs me too, yet I usually call "muntins" "mullions" (when it's not a face-to-face conversation) because when I say "muntins" people don't know what I mean! A bigger pet peeve of mine is people who call them "muttons" - aaagh!

A couple of thoughts...
In the very first picture you posted, to illustrate the slide-over function, the bottom of the door has a taller wooden panel. I like that as opposed to the glass going lower for a few reasons; I have dogs who really like to lick glass, put paws/wet noses on glass and well, who just pant a lot on glass and it leaves a mark. I also visualize a dump truck or some other flying/driving/smashing toy getting "vroomed" a bit too enthusiastically. Of course, this could happen in any glass panel but why not keep the bottom ones a bit safer. None of these thoughts may apply to you.
I agree the 15 lights in 4 door panels may look busy, that many mullions can give me the feeling of being behind bars, in a cage.(maybe flashbacks from a past life- LOL)
I think the center doors and the side panels should be the same or VERY different. If the side panels looked more like an architectural detail with a door that slid in front of it that would look great.
I actually think the pocket door would have worked better for me. Since the pocket hardware is on the top and the bottom, I have seen where the pocket wall, itself, is rather open and constructed to look like an open halfwall. When the mullioned door slides in the glass shows through the halfwall opening. I am looking for picture but can't find yet.

I have seen exterior doors where blinds or other decorative features such as panel dividers are installed between panes of glass. I wonder if that convenience is available for interior applications?

I think it's the corners of the lites that make cleaning such a PIA.

Have you considered some of those gorgeous curved, or cathedral, windows that are available in cabinetry?

I have a bunch of French doors I'm using for my pocket doors now. Actually, 4. I haven't gotten to the cleaning stage, either, but being internal, I'm not so worried about it. I will have kittie noses on the bottom glass, but all my windows end up with those. Special order, I say!

I was going to order the prarie mullions on cabinetry, kitchen windows and french sliders, but decided to do the square panes to match the rest of the house. I am glad I did.

dilly- I agree. I don't want to bring in another look so I'm thinking either clear or the colonial style muntins (if that's the right word).

Or, I could do the colonial in a beveled glass or leaded glass but I don't know...

BTW- I'm thinking of doing plain glass in the kitchen cabs and DR cab instead of the muntins pictured.

OK, well I think I'd either do 10 lite doors which wouldn't be as busy as 15.

OR, even though Marcolo (whose opinion I respect a lot) says that the leaded glass is off-era, I really love it and wonder if I were to use a silver caming instead of black if that would modernize it a bit? On the Simpson Door site it describes black caming as rustic, old world and the Silver Caming as updated.
Our door hardware will also be brushed silver tone.

We have french doors between our LR and FR. We have the wood between the panes and I don't like it at all. Iwas away and DH decided to do this. So it was his choice.

Our original windows had the muntin also. When we replaced them the grills are in between. We have a bay window in our eating space and I had just clear glass put in. Love it and wish we had done that with the whole back of the house. One of our neighbors did that. We did not have grids put in our slider either. I wish my interior french door didn't have glass.

Would keeping them all glass (no muntins) be an option?

Otherwise I'm thinking 10 lite with V Bevel, or possibly silver leaded....

If I did wood muntins maybe just the center doors could have them and the two side could be plain glass. We want to keep an open feel. The doors will mostly be open.

Hi 2LittleFishies, just visiting GW for the first time in a while and found this thread. Our interior french doors have beveled glass and pewter leaded mullions. We have eight of them throughout the house I believe, and we find them easy to clean.
