kitchen inflation

Our freestanding range died, and I would like to replace it with a slide-in model. Then I realized that would leave a hole in the counter top behind the stove, and a partially tiled wall above the stove. Since the kitchen is 30 years old, with ugly Formica counters and back splash, I was secretly thrilled with the prospect of new counter tops and back splash. And figured why not replace the sink with an under mount one (with new faucet) while I'm at it. Wouldn't mind some new lighting either.

You can see where this is going, I'm sure... And I really don't want to go there! Really, the budget stops with the above. No way does it include new cabinets, and I'm okay with our existing cabinets.

I have this odd feeling that this is a dumb thing to do, but I can't explain why. Can you?
