Custom cabinetry cost - Too Good to be true??
Comments (8)Hi Bosdiyer -- we did indeed go with a custom cabinet maker (Lee's Dutchhaus in Sarasota Fl) and they did a truly wonderful job on our Pantry (approximately 11 linear feet), our mudroom (14 feet) and a custom window seat for a large aquarium window. I'll try to get some photos and post them but they are beautifully done although took a few weeks longer than had been originally estimated. For our 6 bathroom vanities we ended up buying Conestoga cabinets from The Cabinet Joint (solid wood; 3/4" plywood back, dovetail drawers, blum slides, etc). We had also spoken to a couple other Conestoga dealers but the gentleman at The Cabinet Joint spent a great deal of time with us and was a real pleasure to deal with. Last but not least, we have approximately 18 linear feet of cabinetry needed for our laundry room -- given we waited so long to figure out what we want there - we decided to go Conestoga on that as well. We've just ordered them though so we don't expect them to be in until Aug 6. Overall -- anything "custom" ...e.g. our window seat which has 3 turns to it and our mudroom, the custom cabinet makers (in this case a Menonite cabinet maker) definitely win hands-down. If you are going with a bathroom or area of high humidity and you can customize size to 1/8th of an inch, then Conestoga cabinetry (which is likely the supplier of the doors for medallion, brookhaven, etc), is a winner. We also found the range of 'finishes' (stains & glazes) a bit broader with COnestoga. We're 2 weeks away from completing a 7 month renovation on a 6500 square foot home -- its been exhausting and i hope to post some pictures -- we've definitely made some mistakes (e.g. the house painter who took a 10k deposit and walked out the door never to be seen again) but I think we nailed the cabinetry. sorry for the long post.... i've lived and breathed this renovation and i guess need an outlet for sharing some of our experience;-> regards - dbmy...See MoreShow me your real wood floors!
Comments (31)Ours is natural maple. Lauzon pre-finished natural maple - solid wood, not engineered. Our cabinets are natural cherry. Note that cherry will darken over time - mostly in the first 6 months to one year. Our GC gave us a 2-year old sample door to use when picking colors so that we could choose based on what the cabinets would look like after the cherry had darkened. The effect isn't as noticeable on stained cherry. Maple is very hard and should hold up well. There are various grades of maple - higher grades are more uniform, lower grades have more color variation (e.g. mineral streaks). We chose the less uniform because it looks more interesting and it should wear better. We also chose the matte finish which should wear better than the semi-gloss (and I prefer the less shiny finish anyway but wear is what brought my husband around since he liked the shiny more). Here is the maple with our kitchen cabinets. The kitchen was redone about 6 years older so this shows the maple with cherry that has had time to darken (this picture was taken before the cherry toe kicks were put on the cabinets): A more close up picture to show some of the color variation. The cabinet color is more accurate in this picture: Here are the floors with new cherry wood on our family room cabinets:...See MoreMixing stained wood kitchen cabinetry with painted cabinets?
Comments (15)We recently redid our kitchen and did the upper cabinets in a medium-dark stain and the lower cabinets in a cream/white milk paint. We also converted seven of the upper cabinets to window cabinets, which helps blend the two since some of the dishes showing through are also a creamy white; and we used the same new stainless steel cabinet pulls across all the cabinets, which helps pull things together too. We ended up liking the result even more than we thought we would! The upper cabinets have a nice patina/character to them, and the lower cabinets seem modern and clean. Both pair well with the quartz countertops, which look like white marble. Even with the darker upper cabinets, the kitchen looks SO much lighter and brighter than it was before, when the countertops were black and all the cabinets were an oak-y orange stain over maple wood. (Going two-tone this way - in reverse - is less typical, but I did find plenty of photos where this approach was taken in other kitchen remodels.)...See MoreOur Wood-Mode cabinet order: what else should I be thinking of?
Comments (10)In your shoes ... knowing I am likely facing cost and time over-runs on the project ... I would ask myself what it's worth to have a better functioning temporary kitchen now. If you need quality and you need it fast, the rule of thumb is that you will pay extra for it. But if you can improve your temporary situation to the point you don't feel like you have to rush then you can remove rush charges (and probably save yourself some mistakes along the way). So - do you still have a working dishwasher & sink? Can you get them back if they were removed? Of course, all of this is assuming you didn't have to pay a deposit to WoodMode - if you did then my first concern would be getting that money back. If you paid something to the KD to send to WoodMode, it's reasonable to ask "I paid a $10k deposit and I would like to see information about how much of that deposit was your commission versus what was sent to WoodMode." I'm sorry this is happening to so many people right now, it is so much money at stake....See Morecaryscott
