that's really hard to view. can you draw it out on graph paper, marking doors and rooms they lead to, windows, appliances etc and post it?

others might be able to read thru the dots and lines that I can't tho...

It looks pretty classic as far as the sink stove fridge island. I might put the prep sink halfway down the cooking side of the island. Would you prefer more space alongside the sink, or do you want the open counter for baking?

Taste only, but I would round the corners of the island. Fridge to island looks tight, with an armload of groceries. Kid space versus clearance/architectural interest? Your choice.

I don't see any upper cabinets. How many linear feet of upper and lower cabinets do you have now? How many will you have? Again, personal choice.

And here's a disposable thought, maybe it will help you isolate what bothers you about the plan. Turn the island 90 degrees and attach it to the other cabinets. Or go triangular. Is there passageway again off the picture on the other side of the other cabinets? Can you get traffic to flow around the kitchen altogether? Is there considerable traffic to the dining room? i don't know why I like it better turned, but I'm more into comfortable enclosures than open floor plans.

I'm a little unclear about what you don't like about this plan. There are a few obvious simple things that need changing, including (a) moving the prep sink to the other end of the island, (b) adding more overhang legroom on the island, and (c) moving the refrigerator a few inches from the wall so you can open the left side. Like Lyvia, I am curious about what appears to be no uppers at all, but that's not unheard of. But, other than those things, the plan seems just fine. Can you elaborate about what's bothering you about the plan?

I would also like to know what bothers you about the plan, so we can address that more precisely for you.

If it were mine, I'd consider running the stove wall cabinets down to the end of the stairs, and getting rid of the peninsula...Putting the sink and dw on the end of the stove run. I'd move the island so it isn't in front of the fridge and probably center it in front of the stove.

The prep sink is definitely not located well, as drawn. And it's a long way around the peninsula to the table with hot food.

What room is off to the left of the plan? Do you really want the study wide open to the kitchen, or could you like more wall there?

Still don't know if it's what you're going for, or if it helps. Since you said, "Before the foundation is poured," I have a feeling this is a bigger problem than just a little moving stuff around. Maybe we need to see more of the house?

Anyway, here's the change I suggested as an alternative. In the process of making changes, I noticed that the fridge is tucked back and against a wall on the side. You might have trouble opening any door that hinges on the left if it's right up against the wall. If you bring it out to free up the door, you could also deepen the counters along the stove run. That way the fridge doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, and you get deeper work space, which is always nice. I have gone ahead with the deeper counter on this drawing:

I apologize for the confusing cabinet lay out. We DO have upper cabinets along the entire wall with the refrigerator and stove.

We are absolutely considering enclosing the study in some way. We are unsure about simply bringing the ceiling and walls in to make an alcove OR doors. It is to be a place in which we will have the family computer and with four children we need to be able to see what they are doing.

rhome410: I like the idea of deeper countertops; however, does that only work with a counter depth refrigerator? Again, we are a family of six and after seeing my folks refrigerator (counter depth) I know that size will not suit our needs.

holligator: Is 18 inches overhang beter suited for the island?

I agree, I think the prep sink should be moved as well.

lyvia: There is no walk through space on the other side of the cabinets...actually the back of our couch will be by the cabinets.

Things I don't like: Am I going to want to walk around the sink, dw area everytime I need to get something from the kitchen? It seems as though I am usually getting up several times throughout a meal to get somebody something.

Also, if I want a second oven, where do I put it, and the same goes with the mw and warming drawer. I just don't know where to put them as far as function and looks are concerned. For me, function over form but I don't want an unbalanced kitchen either.

Actually what was drawn on your original plan was counterdepth, but in my plan, with pulling the fridge out to the front of that little wall and deepening the counters, there is room for a standard depth fridge. If you make the counters deeper, it helps a standard depth fridge look more built-in, or at least more like a counter-depth fridge.

rhome410: After seeing the plan you drew of for me, I walked away with a big smile on my face. It is very encouraging to know there are options other than what the architect drew for us.

Our children are still young so having them on the other side of the island will give me more peace concerning their safety, but I feel the space will grow with our family.

A standard lower cabinet is 24" deep, so what would be a good depth for the lower and upper cabinets using your plan idea.
