chandelier choice for master bedroom

Hi!

This is my first post, but I have been lurking since spring and gathering some fantstic ideas for the new home we are building.

I am finally posting because I have to pick lighting this week and I am stuck on our master bedroom. I would like some type of chandelier.

Here is my headboard and bedside tables. The other furniture is the colour of the top of the tables.

The new bedding is from pottery barn (its not all in the picture)

Here are some choices I have been thinking about:

or something a little simpler

I really like the first one, but I am wondering if it is too much with the headboard.

I really like the 1st one. I like how it repeats the design of the headboard & I don't think that it will be too much. Be decadent!

I REALLY like the first one also. I think it's very romantic for the bedroom and ties in nicely with your headboard.

When we build, there won't be any rooms above our Master Bedroom. At the moment, my almost 13-year-old son and 3-year-old's room is over our Master Bedroom. My 8- and 10-year old's room is above the living room. Their bathroom is between their two rooms. When sleeping in, I can hear every single movement that my 13-year-old and 3-year do. There was carpet in the room which helps with the noise, but I hate carpet and put in wood flooring. If he drops something, I hear it. When he goes to the bathroom, I hear it. When all 4 of them are in one room, I can hear them. Just as this, I can hear every movement in my other boys' room when in the living room. They are very rambunctious and like to jump around. Another problem I have is that the pipe from their toilet/tub goes down the wall which is located between our living and kitchen/dining room. When they flush the toilet or let out their bath water, the pipe rattles in that wall. I know every time they use the bathroom and so do my guests. Most times it is rather embarrassing.

Yes, it is part of an addition that is being constructed. The contractor said he needs to know the brand so he knows where to put the vent.

Great ideas! Here’s what our bedroom looked like before. We have our dressers (which I know are way too big for the room) within the room which is why I was thinking more overhead lighting would be ideal (that fan gives off minimal lighting when the cover is installed. Whatever overhead lighting we do put in will have a dimmer switch. I live in Alaska where it stays pretty dark most winter, so I do like having lots of different lighting options. Also, husband loves overhead fans. And I doubt I can convince him to take down the one he just put up.

Thank you for your advice. I think you've made me brave enough to choose the first one! It will certainly make the space much more romantic!

Whatever you choose, make sure that it fits the size of the room. I don't know what size your bedroom is, but the chandeliers look small. We have one similar (but larger) to your second choice over our tub.

Are you not putting in a ceiling fan?

I was a bit worried about the size thing too. The room is 13 by 15 feet plus a small alcove to one side, big enough for a chair and small dresser which will be lit with a recessed light on a dimmer. The ceilings are only 8 feet, so when I try to get a larger diameter light, the height becomes an issue. By the way, it will be mounted near the foot of the bed.

To add to everything else, today I went to the lighting store my builder uses and I found out they do not carry the first light. (I was mistakenly told that they did over the phone). The best option they have is this one:

It is 18" wide and 20" tall when mounted on the ceiling as shown. The first chandelier shown is 18.5" and 22 tall (plus chain), which is getting quite long. So, now I'm not sure at all. I just did not want an ugly clip-on light over my bed :) Maybe I need to look for something a bit more flush mount but still pretty.

P.S. I am not getting a ceiling fan because where I live we would only use it for 2 months of the year (my kids have been playing in the snow for the last 2 days) and since I don't love how they look we will just use a portable fan when we have to.

Any other thoughts / ideas?

Is there any reason you have to use the source that your builder uses?

I don't think the rusty finish of the one at the store works well with what you have in the room.

les917 - I agree, the rusty finish is not quite right with the room. That's what I was thinking about all night! So, although I love the light, I think it's not right for the room. I wanted to use the builder's light store because it was just easier to have them install it, but if it is not the right light then I would be better off buying one myself - only now to convince DH of this! The light you found is very unique - I'd have to see it in real life, I think. I will phone around here. (I also live in Canada so the shipping costs are usually huge).

Monicakm - that light would certainly tie in. I don't usually like chandeliers with glass shades, but I think I have seen it at a store and will go have a look. Thanks! By the way, I love the chandelier you just put over your tub (not right for my bedroom, but great for over the tub!) I wanted a mini chandelier in the bathroom, but convincing my DH to even let me have one in the bedroom is major!

So, my quest continues...thanks for the help. This is fun, I am glad I posted. I have gotten so many great ideas over the last few months from this site. So many people are such great decorators!
