tin ceilings

I am thinking strongly of the "fake" tin ceiling panels that you can glue to any existing ceiling. I am pretty sure I am going to have Shaker/Mission style cabs. Do these two things go together? Has anyone had the plastic type ceiling panels? I've found at least three different compositions/colors/brands.

Some questions to ask:

Do they work with your overall home style?
Is your kitchen enclosed or open? You need a starting and ending point.

Shaker/Mission style are both linear styles and tin ceilings are more decorative. They are from the same historical time period, so they have been used together in restorations. Keep the lines of the ceiling linear and it would probably work. As far as which one to use, you should get a sample to make sure they are realistic looking. Some are made to be painted and look better than unpainted or metallic plastic. You could also look at a wallpaper called anaglypta or supaglypta.

I just purchased the tiles to do my backsplash with. They suggested I use double face tape to adhear them. That way when your tired of them you can get them down easily, without the glue left behind. Im going to give it a try and see how well it sticks. Maybe an idea for you to try.

Hi, I am from Rochester and I visit this place all the time. They do have alot of nice stuff. sometimes things are a bit pricey, however there are some good deals to be had. We just went there last week and bought some picture rail for 1.25 a ft. Not too bad. It was painted. The un-painted stuff was 1.50 a ft. They have alot of stuff that is hard to find so we visit them often. I think they have both new and used tin ceiling. I would recommend buying some new stuff. It is easier to find what you want and it will fit your room. The used stuff is often painted too, which means you have to be concerned about lead paint when fixing it up. -renee

We did one in our hall bath. We patched the ceiling first. It was extremely easy to do, and DH and I are not handy. You cut the tin with a paper cutter and then the trim with tin snips. It is tongue and groove install, so it is not glued to the ceiling but uses screws. You leave a small gap so that air can get under the tiles. Eventually, our bath will need to be gutted (and maybe expanded), so this is sort of a long-term temporary solution until that happens. We've had it about 5 years, and it has held up well in the bath. I showed pics to my hairstylist, and he wound up doing his entire kitchen in a traditional silver color. Hmm....lovely ceiling! I would consider the dark spots "age marks" and let it go at that. After all if you wanted it to be new, wouldn't you buy a new ceiling?

I'm using the anaglypta wallcovering and then painting it white to simulate the look of a painted tin ceiling. I am hoping that it gives it some texture and interest without being overwhelming. Our house is an old victorian-era farmhouse so I think it is appropriate. And the wallcovering is forgiving to ceilings that are less than perfect.

I bought mine from American Blind and Wallpaper but found many online sources by searching "anaglypta" or "tin ceiling wallcovering". I also saw it at Home Depot or Lowes (HD, I think, but not sure) last week.

It will be installed this week or next so I can give an update then, if you're interested... I was not feeling brave enough to take the installation on myself so I am having a pro do it for me.

Great idea on the wall paper. I've seen it in menard's but my mind just didn't make the leap. I have samples of the fake tin and I've seen another one of them in person. My house is also an old farm house, circa 1880. I'll have a single bowl farm sink. I've also bought some wallpaper from American Blind. I've lusted over it for 5 years so I bit the bullet and ordered it just in case I use it on the wall/backsplash. It's really a lot of fun choosing things until I start adding the choices up.

We have a deed dated 1880 so we think that's the construction date of our old farmhouse too.

If you go with the wallcovering, it is worth a few dollars to order a sample to be sure you are happy. The product I purchased is a vinyl wallcovering with sort of a puffy pattern on it. I have faith that when this is painted it will look a little different than it looks on the roll!

Graham and Brown had a nice variety of these paintable wallcoverings, but only one or two that looked like tin tiles. www.grahamandbrown.com

What I saw at Home Depot was much less expensive per roll than what I bought from AB&W but I am not sure if I was comparing single rolls to double rolls...

Do you want to try REAL tin? These panels from American Tin are super easy to install. They snap together. You cut them with an office paper cutter. DH and I did it, and we are not that handy. My hairstylist used them, too, and he is not that handy either.

As you can see, you can go with a metal finish or a variety of colors.
