should i extend these cabs to the ceiling?

hi there. we're almost ready to order the cabinets but i keep going back to my baking center wall. it's a U shaped kitchen and i prefer cabs extend up whenever possible. but the cabinet maker sent me this drawing and i like it. but i know i'd like it if they went went all the way up... i can't decide. i'm thinking i should go with my gut and run them up, but i don't want to ruin my kitchen! please weigh in! THX.

this is the wall in question. the center armoire will be stained. all perimeter cabs will be white. i'd add boxes to the top with latches....what do you think? ceiling, yes/no/maybe/definitely NOT.

this is the sink wall. spice cubbies (right) will not go to ceiling, but i would extend the corner cab on the left.

the range wall (no uppers)

the fridge/freezer wall (hard to explain, and it's not fully worked out yet. you can't really get the gist of it from the drawing) but these reach the ceiling as well.

Wow I'm overwhelmed. So many cabinets! Do you have enough kitchen items to put in all these cabinets, including the additional cabinets to the ceiling that you are debating about? If so, I say go for your gut. If you don't really need the additional room then I'd say maybe enough is enough.

I like your design exactly the way the cabinet maker presented it. But maybe that's because I'm biased. After living with cabs to the ceiling for 20+ years, I decided to go with cabs that did not extend all the way to the ceiling on this remodel. I installed xenon bars above them which provide a lovely accent lighting option at night. Works for me!

Are you planning to change out your backsplash? Brown might look good with your current countertops if you're at all interested in keeping them. What material are they? I think white or cream would look better with your floors than the dark, but it is hard to tell from the photos. I have a similar tile in my laundry room but it also has swirls of brown so my dark brown cherry cabinets would look great with it. And for those of us who missed the sunshine ceiling, please post. Sounds like I missed something great :) Anita

Another option to consider, if you don't like the short cabinet look, is to split them differently--we have 18" over 32" with 9-foot ceilings, for instance. We considered 50" single doors (and also 48" single doors with extra moulding) but didn't love the look of either for our particular space. I've seen other kitchens where it looks wonderful, though (and some people do a false split where the door has two panels, but is a single door). I sized our cabinets to be able to just reach the top shelf of the lower row without a stepladder; I need a stepladder for anything in the upper row. We use those for long-term storage and I really love that solution after several years in the finished kitchen. It's nice to have the two spaces compartmentalized. Ours have glass doors in the upper row and solid doors in the lower row, since we use that for food storage. A lot depends on how you plan to use the storage, though. I did line up our fridge cabinet with our top row of uppers and really like how that turned out, too. (ETA: We put an adjustable shelf under the fridge cabinet since we also have a shorter refrigerator but planned to replace it in the not-too-distant future--so the cabinets still line up, but the shelf can go up and down based on the height of the refrigerator below. It makes the space look finished while not locking us into any particular dimensions--motivated by the fact that our 1940s too-small fridge enclosure was one thing driving our remodel!) Hi all, thanks for taking the time to vote and for words of encouragement!! The KD worked magic and got 15-36 combination to work although we will have 3 instead of 4 doors on either side of the range. Will post pic of revised layout tomorrow. Singingmicki- the lines are not proposed cuts. I think he is using some funky drawing software Bellajourney- we definitely don't have many pretty things to display :) that would be a good problem to have Editionk point about drawing the eye to the microwave.

I have 10' ceilings and 96" cabinets. I'm 5'9" and can't reach the top shelves but it bothers me not at all to bring out the aluminum 3-step ladder for the few times I need something (mostly holiday items) from those shelves. Luckily my 6'4" son-in-law loves to cook and does those holiday meals while being able to reach the top. There's not much else on those upper shelves other than wine glasses and some ice buckets; I just sold all of my china and crystal - so liberating !! I didn't want cabinets to the 10' ceiling because of the prohibitive extra cost, the look and also because of the Toll Brothers obligatory useless teensy kitchen windows that are 9.5' up on one wall. The discussion about using glass front cabinets in front of those windows, having to replace the trim around the windows, etc, lasted about 14 seconds. Nope. I insisted on having solid wood tops - 2 ginormous pieces - installed and stained to match because I didn't want to see the unfinished wood when I came down the stairs. Now I see giant dust bunnies and I've decided oh, who cares, lol. It's proven to be an excellent area for some serious art glass that I can't put "out" because of cat and grandchildren but if the house is ever on the market, the little bits of standard greenery will go up there instead. Long way of saying that, even being tall, I still use a stepladder but I think I've had 10' ceilings so many times that I'm used to it.

I agree with your designer. Leave it alone. Not extending it to the ceiling will give more feeling of space and depth. We did similar in our master bedroom with closets and top lighted them with rope lights reflecting off the ceiling.

The armoire going to the ceiling is a very nice touch!

Do you mean you want to make all the cabinets on that wall go to the ceiling? I think that would be unbalanced with the stove wall. I really love it the way it's drawn. Just the right amount of tall, considering the color and the impact of that piece, and its relationship to the fridge wall.

I think taking the rest of the cabs to the ceiling on that armoire wall will detract from the armoire. You already have a stunning presentation and I think the armoire to the ceiling breaks up the scene and adds interest....taking the others to the ceiling will make it feel oppresive and possibly, ahem, overdone. Just my humble opinion....and I may add I am taking my cabs to the ceiling but in a much smaller and less impressive space.

What about taking the hood cabinet over the range to the ceiling?? I think it might nicely mirror the armoire somewhat and I could see it there. But, it would only be for looks, not for storage function.

thanks everyone! it stays as drawn. i'm sure you can understand that when it gets down to the wire, the obsessing goes into overdrive.
btw: the range hood will extend to ceiling as will fridge wall and hutches on sink wall. it's not drawn that way because ...i don't know! but they will. thank you thank you thank you!!!
