Lots of folks here are good at window treatments, are you able to post pics for reference?

Sounds like you are describing a window scarf treatment. JCPenney has some. Out of voiles or other sheers they are not very expensive. Plan on having to do a lot of finessing to make them look right, then don't let anyone near them. One tug, and you'll be back to finessing again as there is no sewn-in structure to the scarf. It's all in the hand of the draper.

I would err on keeping the look soft and light so would go with a color that blends with the window trim or if you want 2 colors, go with the white and sage. I think a dark brown color on the window will undo the soft look and colors you have in the room.

Annie: My first thought was to use sage in a semi-sheer fabric, but friends/family felt I needed more color since everything else is blah (their word). I personally like the soft, understated colors. I am planning to purchase fabric from Joanns Fabrics. I contacted their customer serv. dept. for suggestions of possible fabrics to use, but they said they didn't make customer recommendations. Could you suggest a semi-sheer fabric with just a bit of body (don't like limp fabrics like crepon) that can be washed? I used to sew quite a bit, but am out-of-touch with current fabric possibilities. Thanks for all your input. :>)

Take a look at Ikat fabrics, they're on sale at this site and also at the online site of Joanne's . I like them because they're mostly muted shades and are enough pattern without screaming "look at me". But, to my way of thinking, they look better hanging straight down.

Love those fabrics yaya! I would go with one of those that have the sage in them. Ever consider just using panels on either side of the window? You could add sheers in the middle or roman shades if you need privacy.

I would not do the 2 colours, try to visualize how much the contrasting colour would stand out, with your weaving in and out on the rod, it would draw the eye too much, imo.

I would do a fuller fabric in white, so you would get the softness and presence of the treatment in a subtle way, it would be an accent, not a feature that stands out, which is what I think WT's should be.

I'm a sewist, but I typically won't sew sheers for a number of reasons. First they are relatively inexpensive and readily available so no need to customize. (If necessary, I have shortened them...carefully.) Second, some of the fabrics are loosely woven and very squirrelly to deal with and difficult to sew to get square and make straight lines. Third, they look best with narrow hems on the sides and I don't have a serger. Making narrow hems with a sewing machine is a PITA. I also don't know of fabric stores that carry a nice selection of sheers. Usually they are into drapery and upholstery fabrics these days.

So my suggestion would be to explore ready made first before deciding to make it yourself.

I also agree that one color will look richer than a multi-colored treatment.

I agree that WTs shouldn't be a feature in a room. If you want to add color, you can do it through decorative pillows, throws, knick knacks or artwork. WTs should just 'finish' the room. I would go with white. It will look serene and elegant.
