Granite....unable to do because of window??

Hi...I am new here but have read and lurked for a long time!

I am thinking of doing granite, but looking at my window I realized I may have a problem. I currently have tile and my kitchen window comes all the way down flush to my tile counter......but the granite would be much thicker, correct? I assume it would look really weird to have this high piece of granite above the bottom of the window?

I don't want to spend much money and therefore do not want to have to change that window.

Go for it!

My kitchen had a similar issue--at then end of a galley run, window lower than countertop and also it was wide enough that it would interfere with uppers.

Initially I was going to drop the counter height there, and forgo an upper--but this would have dramatically changed the clean look I was going for.

I kept everything full height. Had to *sign off* on it for the cabinet people and love it. We have a single hung, which works well in our space but it looks like you have a slider, which will give you easy access.

Just think how you will have a cute dropped sill to but flowers on and stash your rings in a bowl when kneading dough/
I think it wont loook odd at all and you will be happy that you did not do a huge modification over something that might be actually cute and convenient.

Hi....I am confused. :)

Do you mean I shouldn't butt the granite all the way to the window, but should leave a space? So, it would be lower? I would be worried that liquid would drip back there.

To be fair, most of my meals are pretty simple since it's normally just me. There's not a lot I couldn't or wouldn't cook, and there will always I'm sure be things I will want to try, though I don't delve particularly heavily unless I am having guests. My biggest impediment in the past has been feeling at once overwhelmed by extremely long ingredient lists in recipes, and sometimes by trying to figure out what some of that stuff is and where to find it, but I've tried to work on that and educate myself over time. I buy a lot of rotisserie chickens at Albertson's (most stores have them but I like theirs best), from which I can get several nice meals of varying types. I don't know if these are sold as "loss leaders" or fall in line with pricing of other items, but for what they cost I'm not going to put forth the effort or turn on the oven or invest in one of those Ron Popeil chicken cookers. I have found that I don't like purchased "red sauce" (eaten with pasta for a simple, quick workday meal) regardless of how I may try to doctor it so I make it, which is easy and keep it on hand that way. I go only rarely to any sort of notable steak house, but enjoy steak once in a while beyond that and am quite satisfied with what I can turn out with my All Clad grill pan at not that much cost purchased at a sale. I was surprised at the number of people who don't do rib roasts. They're not cheap, but they're very easy and if you have red meat eaters they make a really elegant special occasion meal. Baking of any kind I could do night and day and never tire of it. I'd like to learn more of the aesthetic aspect of it. Cooking is fine and I like it, though if I met up with a guy who liked to cook, I'd hand over the reins and never give it another thought, but I'd always continue with the hobby of baking.

Close blinds on sunny side will help to reduce the heat in your home. if your husband likes to leave the blinds open maybe he likes to flash the neighbors! Also do you still use those old heater light bulbs. Change out the old singlw wire bulbs for more energy efficent kind or go find the new led bulbs. heat makes the a/c work harder to keep you cool. I'm a man and i do know better. Do you have ceiling fans? Replace them if they are old to a better kind that moves more air and uses less electric power. We just bought the shutters. Sunburst shutters, not cheap. Our entire first floor windows are the same white plantation shutters so we won't be painting them. That would completely ruin the shutters. It's been a dark, gloomy, rainy day so I've had the shutters closed when I took the pictures. Normally they are open but no light would be coming in on a day like today anyway. We can't have a family room without a single window. I'm not removing the window to avoid coming up with an idea of what to hang on the walls. When we moved furniture back into the house after remodel we did toy around with the idea of the 2 seater on the other wall but it looked even worse. The lamp is only temporary. Something we had before and it moved back into the room but I hate that lamp, it doesn't stand up straight so it will be replaced, hopefully with a table lamp. Beverly.....I agree about the area rug. Definitely looking for a bigger rug. Again, this is just what we had and reusing until I find something else. No suggestions on what to hang on the wall other than how everything existing is all completely wrong?

Kvetch, crabapples have more natural pectin located within the skin and core. The crabapple jelly takes a bit longer, per more steps to make than jam. Once the apples are prepared and cooked down you put the mashed apples in a jelly bag to extract (let it drip out) the juice out. You dont want the thick pulp because it changes the consistantly of the jelly and makes the jelly cloudy. This could take a few hours or overnight to get all of the juice out for making the jelly. Redneck girl, your jellies and jams sound so good and I bet they taste amazing. I have not tried the mint jelly, it sounds really good. I know my grandma used to make it years ago. I have a huge patch of spearmint, peppermint and chocolate mint growing so maybe that will be something new I will try next season. :) I made a lot of jam this year. Sour cherry, wild blackberry, raspberry etc. I made apple butter also which is a lot of work, but worth every bit of the effort. We love opening the jars and tasting the homemade jams and jellies in the winter time.

Why not just drop your sink base to compensate for the stone protrusion? I've seen multiple height cabinetry as well as multiple depth cabinetry together - looks very high-end. May even be able to use stone remnants rather than purchasing an entire slab since it will have more cuts. I'd ask for in-person estimates from a few stone installers to get their input - bet they've come across your issue and have creative a solution.

Are you using 2cm granite? How thick is your tile substrate? I would think that your tile substrate, plus the tile would be at least that thick. Since granite usually sits directly on the cabinet top, wouldn't you come out even?

Not sure on any of those questions....I am just starting to think about this whole process. You are right though, I bet there won't be much difference especially if I do use 2cm granite.
