To paint or not to paint? That is the question!

my guest room has become the orphanage for all the furniture in my house that no longer works in other rooms.

in this room... i have two mitchell gold wicker chairs, two bedside tables and a large tv cabinet that has bark on it ... that are all the same brownish red color. i really want to pull this room together and i don't like that reddish brown anymore.

would you paint everything.. including the wicker and the bark... white... or off white?

i just don't know what to do. i could stain everything dark walnut? but i'm not sure how to do that to wicker that already has a stain on it.

should i just sell everything at a garage sale or on craigslist and start over?

i'd be willing to paint the walls too! anything to make this room beautiful!

the rest of the house is full of seagrass rugs with antique oushak rugs on top of them... linen-slipcovered furniture... huge baskets, botanical prints, bamboo blinds.

how can i get this room to look like it's part of the same house?

For some reason gray wicker comes to mind. Can you paint it that color? Maybe then add a seagrass area rug over your carpet? Not sure how that would work, honestly. The color of the room looks great, but perhaps too brown? Maybe go with a gray-ish color, in the same tones? I'm thinking those colors from Restoration Hardware might work in there.

Not sure what to do with the big piece of furniture...You could easily paint that nightstand in a dark gray.

Maybe make sure the bedding somehow reflects the slip covers and pillows you have in the living room.

Good luck, I think you have some nice stuff there, it fits so it would be nice to keep it and just re-work it.

gray is a good idea. i like it... and i love the restoration hardware colors. it'd play off of the wrought iron bed too.

i just may sell the wicker chairs and find some other chairs that are slipcovered. i am still intrigued with painting that rustic cabinet.

would you paint the bark parts or leave those and just paint the flat panels on it?????

ProMar200 Zero is decent paint. I painted my house with the Eggshell (supposed to be Satin?) sheen over Level 5 smooth walls and love the look. This was a remodeled house with all new gypsum board. I have little kids that literally bounce off the walls and the paint is holding up well and touches up very well. The walls have seen dirty little fingers, pencil marks, a bit of blood from nosebleeds, impacts from flying toys,... you name it. It is certainly not top-of-the-line, of course. Cashmere is better quality than ProMar. I would personally do low lustre or pearl everywhere, but that's only assuming your drywaller leaves a perfect substrate. I'm not a fan of "flat" walls. Some SW products have less sheen than stated, but Cashmere is actually higher in sheen. Paint a 2'x2' sample on your wall before committing to a sheen. Good luck.

Or not - if she had a pre civil war house it may be she has furniture/furnishings that would go nicely with an old vintage wood door. 1940s is still of the age where it could go in a more rustic cottagey direction - why not? Could we see pics of the door in question? If the original shellac is still on it can be cleaned/smoothed out with steel wool + denatured alcohol. The contrast between the old vintagey wood + white could be quite attractive. Or, you could stain old door + new trim (around door only) the same color while leaving all other trim white. I would choose something besides wood blinds then start by doing the trim white and leave the bookcase . See if it needs to be white I don’t think so IMO it will look cheap painted white. I would do some solar shades for light and heat control if that is what you need from the blinds and then add some roman shades if you want a bit of privacy at night. Inside mount the solor ones and outside mount some nice linen romans.

Where is the post and beam that takes the place of the wall that you removed? If it’s a load-bearing wall, the beam could be up in the ceiling and the posts could be concealed by trim and/or drywall...if this is a load-bearing wall.

Honestly, I like it the way it is, maybe some accessory changes, but otherwise... maybe it looks different IRL.
