Rohl Allia Fireclay Drop in sink -- anyone have?

I'm considering this sink -- it is a single large fireclay undermount sink, not an apron. Was wondering if anyone has one and if it has worked out well. I'm a little spooked by some of the comments about the fireclay apron sinks -- hairline cracks, uneven, etc. Silgranit seems like it would be a safer choice and it is lovely but thinking it might be a little too contemporary in feeling for our kitchen.

Hi

Yes, I have this sink. Mine has been working out great since the installation a couple of months ago.Less expensive than its apron front counterpart. I was told it was a pressure molded design--the size is not as variable as the hand made model.

I love it.

Hi tobokat, thanks for writing. I am glad to know what you said about the Allia being pressure molded. I really like the look of this sink!

The Allia sink is gorgeous and fireclay has a wonderful feel. Fireclay or white cast iron do look nice with the darker granite like the one you have selected. But stainless is also a wonderful material for sinks. I've had stainless most of my adult life and have never once worried about banging, chipping or breaking it. In terms of resale I don't think that it matters if you chose fireclay or stainless. I looked at the beautiful Allia sink and decided that it was a little bit deep for my needs. I also felt that the Kohler cast iron sinks (most are under 500 dollars) seemed more durable than fireclay. But the Allia was tempting...

@Deana I totally get It! I have my drying dish rack in my sink so it actually ended up working out better for me. I wash on the left, I also have a small tv under my left cabinet to watch while I’m washing dishes and I put the clean dishes to the right. I do have to take out the rack and rinse out the entire sink since food does stay under the dish rack (which rests on top of the grid) but it’s not a big deal at all. It is also convenient having the drain on the side when I wash my dishes that have touched raw meat. Im a nut job when it comes to cross contamination so it worked out wonderfully. The grid also helped with that because the dish rack is resting on top and I carefully pour out the raw juices through the drain hole and no dirty water touches the grid/dish rack/dishes. Love everything about it. My sister has had the single bowl Franke for a few years now and she loves it! Have you seen the Rohl and the Franke in person? My husband and I made our decision after seeing them in person. Sales person said we can’t go wrong with either one but the look and feel of the Rohl definitely won us over.

I ordered mine through a local store...the Shaw 3018. It arrived yesterday and we inspected today...it is cracked at the rim (would show with any sort of reveal). So far my local store has been responsive, but there has been no resolution yet and I need a sink soon! The Rohls are now waitlisted due to some problem at the factory...maybe cracked rims??? LOL. It was also packed with the bottom on the side that said "Front" and to open that side. Does that seem odd? It seems like the bottom of the sink should have been on the ground... Anyway, I'm trying to decide if I stay with Rohl or change to a Herbeau or a Franke or a Kohler Fireclay apron front. Most people love the Shaw, but obviously there are issues with it, too, and I can't wait until Jan. to get the replacement... After this, I would definitely stick with local - they are going to come pick it up so I don't have to deal with shipping, and hopefully they will help resolve this mess.

I have the Rohl Allia you posted above. Before that, I had a Rohl Allia double bowl in my previous home. I have had the current sink for over 6years. No crazing at all. There is one chip from dropping a drill in it but you can barely see the chip and it has never bothered me. I have a sink grid that I purchased about three years ago. I can do with or without a grid. I love the location of the drain in this sink and agree with others that a drain in the center is not always preferred. I also have a Waterstone faucet. I posted in the thread linked about. Although the faucet is made in the US, it is made of parts from all over the world. I had a Grohe Ladylux before and loved it. I also like my Waterstone faucet but would not pay more than the Grohe for it. Good luck!

Don't be spooked by a good brand of fireclay sinks like Rohl. I have both the Shaws farm sink and Allia prep sink. Both are beautiful.

We bought 3 Rohl sinks which were installed last week. The 30" Shaws apron, the 24" Allia with undermount kit, and the 15" Allia prep sink installed just as in the photo. Although they haven't had water in them yet, the soapstone guys had no complaints about installing around the Allia sinks. They did have to do some fancy on-site adjustment to have a consistent reveal on the Shaws.

FYI- My cabinet guys built up a "lip" in the cab for the sink to rest on rather than undermount to the soapstone.

Your sink looks beautiful! Can you explain about the "lip"? Why did your installer do that, and exactly what is it? Did he feel that this sink needed extra support? I really appreciate your sharing this information --

The cabinet had a rim around the inside when it came. The cabinet installer just extended it a little on the left and right side so the sink could rest on it. He just thought it would be a good idea and it was. We didn't have to deal with the undermount kit. By the way, anyone want an undermount kit for this sink? ;)

I have had one in since December 07 and absolutely love it. It is probably one of my most favorite things from the remodel. I have had no problems and it is very easy to keep clean. I would definatley get the stainless grid. it allows for more everyday use without being so fearful of things banging the bottom. The size is great and can fit anything in to hand clean. With the grid I also use it to air dry things since air can circulate around it. Good Luck.

Thanks ging 9 and mary! It just looks gorgeous --and timeless. I'm excited -- this may be the first definite "selection" for the new kitchen. Ging 9, is your faucet also Rohl? It looks perfect with the sink!

My faucet is Mico Simone. i love it too. My sink was one of the first decisions I made also. Have fun and good luck.
