stack size bamboo or rice paper shades?

I'm looking at the old-fashioned roll-up-from-the-bottom shades. I know I had these matchstick shades from Pier One in my apartments in the old days, and I recall constantly tugging on them to tighten them up as high as possible and let in all the light I could. But I can't recall the specifics of the size.

Do you know the approximate size of the roll at the top or a formula for it?

I've found a couple of charts for bamboo romans - 12" or more for a 72" shade - but I'm hoping the old-fashioned roll shades would need less height because they consume depth as well as vertical space?

Would rice paper shades be more compressed?

I got the answer for shoji shades: about four inches for a 72" long blind. I'm about to go eyeball some matchstick roll up blinds. If anyone wants to know the stack height and depth of these, let me know and I'll post back.

Would love to know. Where are you going to look? I would love to get them for all my windows but I thought they were super expensive.

Mary, There does seem to be much confusion about these plants. Specially between the so called Rex and Steroidal Giant. I have included a link to Plant Delights web page where they sell both the regular and Steroidal Giant. Their pictures were the best I could find doing a Google search of the plants. You can see the difference there. The British plant boards talk alot about Rex and Steroidal Giant. Glad I logged back in to GW! I've been absent from these boards for a long time. I received a Culinarian in November but due to construction I didn't move into my kitchen until the end of February. I didn't want to worry until I had lived with the burners for a while, but I've been unable to get anything close to low heat or simmer... plus I had much more urgent issues to deal with after gutting the entire first floor of our house. Now I'm ready to tackle the Culinarian issues. Looks like the "new" new burners must be the answer... time to call Trevor. Like many of you are saying, if I could have a "dream" rangetop on my 30" range, it would be 3 of these big burners that also would simmer well, plus 1 burner with a smaller flame pattern. I find that the flames spread too wide when I use small pans. Sometimes you want a bunch of heat but are using a small pan. I find that's really difficult and I am not comfortable with flames leaping all around the outside of a small pan.

I think you misunderstood me. I am not looking for rice paper WRAPPERS, I am looking for the TRAYS that are used to hold a single wrapper once it's been wet down and before one rolls them. Below is a picture of what I'm talking about. I want exactly this style, though other colors are acceptable. I am looking for an ONLINE source. I have gone to all the local asian groceries I can find and no one is carrying these or willing to order them for me. For those who haven't seen these before... You put a rice paper wrapper on each tray. The tray has small bumps on the bottom around the edge to make it sit up slightly from the tray beneath it. Then you wet down a bunch of wrappers at once. Then set a stack of several trays on a plate, bring them to the table with all the other fixin's and everyone gets to make their own special spring rolls with their favorite ingredients! I know this is a little esoteric compared to the usual topics here, yet I'm hopeful someone will be able to point me in the right direction to an online, retail vendor. Hi Guys! I've been on vacation and in and out a lot. Sorry this is the fist I'm getting back to this. I put them on each side of the window. I do like them there. I wasn't sure about the height at first but after looking at it for a few days I think it's good. They're a little lower than 60" in the middle. It does slightly bother me that they're not centered on the wall on each side of the curtains. They are even in height. Different angles of the room give that illusion. Should the one of the left be lowered a smidge to adjust since people will usually be to the right of the room? If that made sense!! Better? Still not done messing with a plant for one top of the bookends. Squirrel - Thank you for all the PS! I agree the lamp shade isn't the one. Awhile back I got tired of searching for it and just kept that one for now. One of the problems I was running into with larger shades was they would cover a lot of the scrolls and crystals and didn't seem to look right either. I know people have suggested a large drum shade was probably what was originally on there but I don't care for it on this lamp. Tried a couple different fringe ones and it it seemed to be too much with the base of the lamp. I will continue my search at some point! I just needed to get something on there and walk away for awhile.

I think four sounds about right. You can also get roller shades made in natural materials. They look like the matchsticks of our youth, but with fancier fabric and a cleaner look. I have been considering them for my kitchen, but have to wait until the backsplash goes in to see if it isn't too much of a good thing. My tile already have a woven look to it...

I picked up a six foot long matchstick blind at Cost Plus World Market today. Rolled up in the wrapper it is only three inches in diameter. I'm sure it won't roll up that tightly when mounted, but hopefully under seven inches?

It was practically free. I've seen good prices on certain sizes of roller shades in raffia look and woven wood, but not in the size I needed for the sliding door in the FR. I like this old-fashioned kind where you actually see the deus ex machina.

DH painted the room while I was out. It's not looking too promising at the moment. I wanted to avoid a lot of color contrast and I managed to avoid color altogether. Guess I should have agonized longer.

An old SW color called Raffia Basket. It sure looked like more on my poster board than it does on the panelling. I had it mixed in the new cashmere paint, and the color is not the same as my sample board, but I don't think it's far enough off that the mismatch really accounts for the lack of luster. I'm keeping it. I can work with it.

I meant to say 8 foot long matchstick. Those are not to easy to find so I thought I should grab it.
