I know not everyone goes over to Kitchens, and this is really more a decor q then a kitchen function q.

Sooo, behold my cross post and let me know what y'all think.

I'm not crazy about b/s as a general matter, especially in a vintage kitchen which I think should either be floor to ceiling white tile or zero.

In the kitchen proper, I will have an integrate b/s in my double drainboard sink, and a swath of white subway over the range only.

In the butler's pantry, on the sink wall only, I will have a true countertop. Either slate or calacatta white marble, not sure yet. I was planning on just a small strip of the same material to provide a finish if not a b/s per se.

However, I have always like these cute lil' tiles. They are 2" square. They can come in a various colors, or not. I tend to like them as they are. Many different food or kitchenware images. I think I would enjoy seeing them march across the little counter there. It's only 6' wide.

What do you think (note, the lower cabs have been demo'd, and will be replaced with wooden cabs to match the existing antique ones). The new sink will be a plain copper rectangle.

I'd maybe get them and frame them, but I don't think I would use them as a narrow backsplash. I don't know that it would read well, and it starts pushing that little area into material + material + material + material + zone.

You know, if they will make you smile every time you pass by, then you should do it. They are neutral enough that they won't be jarring to your sensibilities, but they have that touch of whimsy or quirkiness if you will, that make them fun.

When the Briggs site opens, go about 1/2 way down the page and find the large magnifying glass. To the right of that is a line requesting you to "Enter engine model number". Type in the model number like this: 28V707-1113-E1 and then click the small black & white magnifying glass icon to the right end of the line. Next you will be presented with a list of choices for manuals. Choose the first 2 (IPL, and owners manual). You may have to do each manual selection as a separate operation. When the manual downloads, save a copy to your computer and then do the same for the second one. You can e-mail me for a copy of a service manual that will cover a bunch of Briggs engines, including yours. But I can tell you that Briggs engines showing symptoms of the infamous KLUNKS SYNDROME are not good candidates for repair, even by seasoned professionals. Engine replacement is a more viable route. My best guess is the previous owner ran it low of oil. The piston seized to the cylinder walls and caused the connecting rod to break.....OR.....the connecting rod seized to the crankshaft......causing the connecting rod to break. So you are probably going to find a bunch of little broken pieces of metal, along with a few big broken pieces of metal. Here is a link that might be useful: This jest in!

Sorry-- I just saw this post. Take your aggressions out with a hammer. I think you'll find the tile comes up pretty easily, especially if this is directly over a single layer of plywood. In fact, I'd like to know how it's stayed down for ANY length of time if it's a single layer. The thing that may be tough will be the thinset. But I've got plenty of ideas for that, as well. Take the tile up first, though, and once the tile's up, we'll have a better idea of what's going on underneath, and I can better advise you on how to proceed. Four cautions, though. First remove any breakable objects from the area. Second, wear safety glasses. Third wear a long sleeve shirt. Preferrably a heavy one, like flannel or chamois. And lastly, wear gloves. The reason for these precautions are that when you start smashing the tile, pieces are going to go flying. I've been known in the past to not worry about the longsleeve shirt part, and end up needing a stitch or two (well, I SHOULD have gotten em). (thin pieces of duct tape make great butterflies!) :-)

My granite is a dark brown Giallo. When I was looking for granite, I took along a sample piece of wood painted in the White Dove of my cabinets. When looking very closely at the granite, there are white specks in it. So, I thought it would be fine. Not so! Over all, it looks brown! It competed with the white tone of the cabinets. The crema is more beige than cream but it goes with white and it goes with brown. And, it is a good transition between the two. This is what I am hopng you can achieve. A good transition color in the tile I am not sure if this color will go with your counter. But, you can try a sample. Everyone on here who has the Rixi really loves it.

I kept reading about curved rods here on GW the past few years and it seemed like a nice concept; less leaking where the rod/line curves inward, more room where it bows out. We installed one of ours a couple of weeks ago (MB is almost 100% done). We were very limited as to how far out we could install the rod--the spacing in the bathroom is very tight (we are the minimum space between toilet and tub). The instructions recommend installing the rod/brackets ~3" further in than you would a straight rod. We had to install ours even further in because we were so tight on space (really didn't want the shower curtain to drape over my lap while using the toilet!). Even with that though, it does make for more elbow room while in the tub. I'm sure you'd benefit even more so if you don't have to place it as far in as we did. As for leaking, there is supposed to be less likelihood of leaking because the liner curves inward at either end of the tub (we keep the liner inside the tub and the curtain on the outside). I bought a nylon curtain liner at BB&B (can tell you which one it is if you want), and it has two sets of mini suction cups along the edges (and a full magnetic strip along the bottom edge). I didn't think I'd use them, but the suction cups hold onto our tile pretty well and help to keep the liner in place, too.

They are darling, I can see why you want to use them. I'm def not in the " if it makes you smile, use it" camp.... I think that is what leads to confused design with products one refers to in the diminutive....iykwim :-)

Lol!! I can easily imagine using four or more on a base as a trivet, as a backsplash, as a frame for a mirror or large print....as you see, I have had to resist cute my entire life, sometimes not as successfully as I would have hoped. It's way easier to point it out in someone else's house, sort of the splinter and plank, you know?

I normally don't like any image printed on a backsplash tile, so I really had to think about these. The fact that they are so small intrigues me and that they are vintage-y and b/w. They have grown on me! I am not sure I understand how you would use them - as an accent row or interspersed with plain tiles? I could see them as an accent row more than the full 6" (if I am understanding your post correctly). You find such interesting things, Mtn!

Thanks, KSWL, Pal, Cyn and MarinaPrivateEquityGal (as I shall henceforth remember you),

I have decided they are, in fact, too cute. And I don't really do "cute". Truth is the ones I saw when I was doing my CT house were a little larger and had bicycles on them, and I really lusted after those even more.

But. It does not fit.

I have been thinking about my original "all or none" statement. If I tile this, I should tile it from counter to ceiling, in one simple field tile.

Which then, leads me to the kitchen proper. I wanted to put tile in one swath above my range and up to my range hood. I have leftover white Subway Ceramic I thought id use.

But I also had another idea... The built in cab in the kitchen --- the back of it is just wall. I was wondering about wallpaper, paint, fabric, but ... why not tile?

So use all the same tile for these three spots - the BP sink wall, the range, and the large kitchen built in ?

It's so funny, as I was reading this thread, one thing that raced through my mind was ' don't do cute'. Then, you said it yourself.
They are 'cute' but they are not classic. I vote no.
I think you could do whimsy in the back of the large kitchen built in, but I think I would do whimsy with color. And, if I did it with tile I would not tile directly on the built in but rather on a screwed on panel so I could get rid of it if I ever desired.
