Let's try this again....Would love some help with kitchen paint

So after posting this on the gallery side of the forum and botching up my photos, I'm going to try this again : )

We have been in our house a little over a year and I am agonizing over what color to paint my kitchen! The problem is this kitchen has only one small window above the sink and gets very little light. I pretty much need to keep lights on in there all day, so I am looking for a barely there shade. I am thinking gold, beige or green, though my floor is tile with a gold hue to it:

color = mushroom

Is it weird for the walls to match the floor?

Also, we would like to put in a tumbled stone backsplash with beige tones.

I am including a link for a some photos of my kitchen. The one where the cabinets look dark is very telling of how little daylight we get in there.

I'm looking at BM Nantucket Breeze, BM Vellum and SW Kilim beige. We have breakfast room which is off to the side of the kitchen that I am considering painting BM Currant Red.

kilim beige is a pretty color. all the paint colors on that strip are nice. Kilim beige can have a fleshy undertone in some spaces. We are storing an old sofa of this fabric for our daughter. I just checked my paint chips w/ the fabric & I actually like the nomadic desert better with it. The ND has no undertones in it when applied. SW Softer Tan may be worth a look too.

Sure. We followed the plans for the top of this cold frame made of PVC http://www.pvcplans.com/coldframe.htm He made the bottom to fit right inside of the bed and we buried it some. We covered it with plastic drop cloth from the painting section of Lowes. Next year I will have time to plan ahead and order some thicker plastic but we were on a time crunch. I think if I had it to do over again, we would have used 1/2" pvc instead of the 3/4". We weren't able to get enough clips to hold the cover on (that's why one isn't covered) and if we had used the smaller pvc, we could have used those large 2" black binder clips to hold the plastic on. That's what I used when I lived in WA and built a hoop house. here's a link to show you what clips I'm talking about http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/838056/Office-Depot-Large-Binder-Clips-2/?cm_vc=C5203 My husband doesn't really draw out plans, kinda builds as he goes (drives me nuts but who am I to complain if he does the job) We had to try and figure out how to cover the ends since we didn't have any more clips and needed to be able to get in easily to water. I thought of lattice and we found some plastic lattice with smaller openings. On the side that gets the most wind, we covered the lattice with plastic and stapled through small cardboard pieces to help secure it. We have a heavy duty staple gun so hubby had to push down the ends on the outside with his multi tool so I wouldn't get poked. I suggested shorter staples but.... Then we just poked a few holes through the plastic and zip tied it to the frame. The other side of the lattice we left uncovered so that the plants would get some air. You could cover it but we ran out of time and it seems to work just fine. Our garden is right by the fire station on a busy road, we even had a couple of people stop and come see them and ask how we built them. If you need close up pictures of any of it, let me know. I have a couple on my blog but I could email more. Something else we did, since we get so much bloody wind, I tied zip ties around the bottom of the frame and stapled them to the box. Kitchenkelly, Don'e worry there are some days that he's a free give away. No need to copy. Actually I made and executive I am going to order the CB X Back. I love the look of them from sitting in my familyroom. Yaaaa. Now for cushions. PB has some that I love love they are their Box Cushions Green Hudson Stripe (green and blue)love..Remember I have a demin blue sofa in familyroom and I have blue items in my glass cabinet in kitchen. CB only have a blue stripe cushion made to fit the stool. I like both love the whole blue/green thing in PB. Do you think PB will fit my stools? Of course, called PB once again only catalog/internet sales only. They need to have a better stock inventory. PB show cushion with school house stool which is 18 1/22 x 14.5 to backrest. CB stool is 17 1/2 wide and 14.5 to the backrest. Do I go for it too now that I am on a roll? I'm so glad you've all stopped by, for a visit. Tea can go on, as long as everyone is having a good time, so it's never too late to join in :) Today, I'm just about to have a big cup of Earl Grey and tackle my desk. It's a bit of a mess and I need to get organized! All this gardening and my inside chores, definitely fall behind. I'm hoping to get enough done today, that I can go out and finish working on my bench, when it cools off a bit. The fairy garden is on the east side of the house, so it's nice and shady in the afternoon. ML- I hope you don't have any hurricane worries. It doesn't seem fair that you go north for the summer and they're following you, up there. Katrina- Your dog sounds like a real sweetie. I know you'll find great 'parents' for her and a happy new home. I hope you'll be able to get your own dog, soon. Ellendi- Great idea to share tea, at work. Here's a suggestion. It hinges on ditching the side porch. Right now your public rooms (kitchen, living) and your private rooms (bedrooms, bathrooms) are all jumbled up. It's better to have public all together on one side of a small home and private on the other. To achieve this, I drew your kiddo's room + the front bathroom as a master suite. I'm hopeful that closing up the existing doorway and opening a new one across from the vanity is an affordable project. Another bummer about your existing layout is the disconnect between your living spaces including your back yard. To remedy this, I put the kitchen where your master bedroom is. It would be so nice to have one larger, open living space that peeks to the backyard. It's hard to tell if it's feasible, but I thought that by closing off the master bedroom door you could create a closet for a stackable washer/dryer outside the bathroom. I'd enjoy working this out on graph paper if you have a chance to measure your rooms. Yours is one of my favorite kinds of . projects!

How funny! The trim on our house is painted in Nomadic Desert. We also have stone on the exterior of our home that is very similar in color to my kitchen cabinets. I figured since the Nomadic Desert looked so nice with honey color of the stone I should consider it for the kitchen : ). We get so little natural light in there though I thought I should go up one color on the paint chip to keep from sucking all the light out of the room. But you are right, it goes better with the fabric than the Kilim Beige!

Hi,

Actually I don't dislike it now lol! Anything wrong with a cream? If you want the light, keep it light. I've always had creamy white paint in kitchens...nothing wrong with that.

I usually gravitate towards saturated colors, so I had not considered cream. Can you make any specific recommendations for a cream color?

There is that beautiful Queensland fabric! Love it! Have you considered the colors in your fabric as a jumping off point? Some suggestions to look at in no particular order are, BM Rosemary Sprig, BM Richmond Gold, BM Tawny, BM Peale Green, BM Toasted Chestnut, BM Golden Retriever, BM Toffee Orange, BM Ansonia Peach, BM Maple leaf Red, BM Hot Apple Spice and BM Million Dollar Red.

Yes I love that fabric too! I had leftovers from when I purchased it in 2003 to make a valance for the window above the sink in my old kitchen. It went really well with the dark cabinets I had then. We painted that kitchen in SW Restrained Gold, which really complemented the fabric. Unfortunately, that shade doesn't work with the lighter cabinetry and is too dark for this space.

Wow, you rattled off a lot of BM options here! I don't own their fan deck, but their store is around the corner from me so I will have to investigate. I had actually considered the BM Maple Leaf Red for my breakfast room, but then it seemed too dark for fabric I bought for the window treatments in there (Bosporus Toile 128)

I went ahead and added a couple of pictures of the fabric and breakfast room...

What a beautiful open space! I cant imagine you don't get tons of light.. I am thinking with it being that open,it would need to flow with the spaces around it. I like your fabric choices. I wouldnt go dark,but I think some color would be nice to balance the heaviness of the cabinets. Anxious to see what you come up with!

Thank you so much for your comments... When we bought this house my husband purposefully selected a lot that would keep us from getting too much direct light. The sun used to blare through our windows in our house in Houston... We didn't have energy efficient windows, which meant we had constant glare everywhere and air conditioning bills that were through the roof. However, the windows in our new house are tinted. Add onto that a heavily wooded backyard and only one small window above the sink, you get a dark kitchen.

And yes, with the open space the colors do need to flow!

I had valances across a bank of windows in my last house, that I covered with the Queensland. I used a soft moss green color that looked great with the fabric, but a cream would probably show it off a little better. Or did you already find something?

Beautiful kitchen! We had the same fabric valances in our FR and the walls were painted BM Dessert Tan, which is a gold-tan color. Changes with the light and is a really great color!
