It should be interesting to see what Candise Olsen from Devine Design does on the Oprah show today.

I couldn't watch anymore when Candace called Pottery Barn cheap and affordable. I felt poor.
I looked up the fixture she was referring to...349 plus shipping. Which really isn't that much ..still it's not 79 from Lowes.

It's easy for a normal consumer to start questioning a design choice or material when everyday, every hour, we are bombarded with "what's new". I am a catalog hound, and I finally realized that if I stopped most of my catalogs, I would be able to calm down the part of my brain that says "oooh I want that".Whether its shoes, or wall art, or countertops, or home fabrics - I know I will be more than content with my already beautiful home if I stop exposing myself to other choices. The Pottery Barn catalog now has color choices from Benjamin Moore; the Napa Style catalog has all the things I need to make my kitchen a warm, loving place for people to gather around my pizza oven, and use all six kinds of my "fun" glassware, while snacking on eleven different types of artichoke spread. They keep showing us stuff we didn't even know that we need! I am definitely a conspicuous consumer - I fall for it all and I buy so many silly things. All I want to do is create a functional kitchen that is easy on the eye now, and at the same time create one that will be easy to live with a long time. I do have to agree with Peacock - it may be easier on the eye and on the budget to make classic decisions. Should you still buy the provencal yellow Lacanche range? Sure, as long as you realize that you will be looking at it and decorating around it as long as you live in that house. Maybe that's part of the problem - so many people in this country move so often that a kitchen re-design is rarely a permanent decision! Interesting thread. Good food for thought. Sorry if I'm repeating...haven't read all the comments. Michael Payne and Designing for the Sexes rocked!!! That was real talent and class, and you always learned something about design. I also really enjoyed Decorator's Challenge and Landscapers Challenge because these were actual talented designers who gave 3 unique perspectives on one project. Now everything on HGTV looks exactly the same ( i.e. gray walls, hardwood floors, too many randomly patterned throw pillows, contemporary furniture). Where's the variety? Bring back Chris Casson Madden (Interiors by Design) and Joann Liebler (Room by Room), Mission Organization, Donna and Shannon Freeman (Secets That Sell), Before and After, Dream House, Weekend Warriors (a personal favorite) Susie Coehlo (Surprise Gardener), Debbie Travis (The Painted House) and shows like Location, Location, Location that showed different aspects of people purchasing homes. I am rather annoyed by how House Hunters is always about a bickering couple who can't agree on style, but at 22 can always afford to buy their dream home. How about showing a variety of homebuyers again; older people, singles, working parents who can't afford to gut and renovate. I'd like to see people with more modest budgets take the homes they purchase and turn them into something wonderful. And for those who are not familiar with any of these shows or hosts, you really missed a treat. This was HGTV at its prime. Believe it or not, long before the last season or two of Divine Design, and long before that crap Candice Tells All, Candice Olsen actually used to design rooms without mirrored furniture, espresso wood, and ice blue and gray. Anyone remember the sherbert colored sunroom or the kitchen with the blue strie (sp?) cabinets? Those were the days... Not that the Property Brothers arent't good, and I do particularly like Hillary Farr's style (even if she can't budget worth a darn), but enough is enough. And don't get me started on Genevieve. She sucked on Trading Spaces! Now if the would just dig up the Designer Guys from the Discovery Channel, all would be well. Anyone who can design a woman's apartment around a man's suit and make it look fabulous is okay in my book. Done with my rant....i'll get back to work

"It is perhaps a pessimistic view of the power of Oprah." Boy, no kidding! Don't get me wrong, I like Oprah, but enough is enough of people being her "Lemmings." Bee, that's hilarious (but sad) that you only got candy. I keep the TV on all day as background noise since I'm alone (it's so quiet here in the country), and I kid you not, I've never seen him actually decorate. Oh, I see him rearrange furniture in someone's home and make suggestions on what to put there, but as far as his tastes go? I haven't the foggiest idea. Why doesn't he do a show on "layering", like the topics Jim does? Teach us HOW to do it. Or using "texture" in our homes? Decorating styles and ideas are endless! Home decorating has never been more popular than it is now, and he's just blowing it. It's obvious that people did tune in for decorating ideas just by reading this board in the past & talking to my friends, and all of us "decorators" have tuned out because he talks about everything BUT decorating! So I can't judge his talent because he never shows us. Strange.

The show that I really like is Bang For Your Buck. On BFYB the camera takes its time and actually shows whole rooms and details with a well-photographed and easy eye. No jarring editing. No dumb "reveal." The owners explain why they remodeled as they did, how and why they made their decisions, what worked and what didn't, etc. Then the designers come in and critique the rooms. Of course, they're supposed to find something wrong, so they always do, even if it's silly. But you actually have a serious discussion of a room by two separate parties. I don't actually care much who got the biggest "bang", but I've gotten a lot of decorating ideas. Love HouseHunters just for choosing the house I like best and guessing which was the one chosen. Some of the stories on HH are very moving. Unless, of course, it's some 20-something whippersnapper who whines about granite or looks at a perfectly usable bathroom and says "dated". In that case, like some other posters here, I yell at him/her to go live in a village in Afghanistan or Iran, where the toilets are literally a hole in the floor (or the ground). Sometimes we don't realize how great our lives are! As an English teacher and cranky grammar-nanny, I do blame HGTV for its cruel assault on our beautiful language. However, I'll spare the forum my lecture. :o)

I didn't see the whole show; just the ending. Is it just me or does it seem like she does the same room over and over? She is talented but her ideas are starting to look very predictable to me.

I was kind of disappointed in the show. Not enough detail from the organizational angle for me. That's what I was hoping to see . . . more good, usable ideas.

I agree w/Lynn. I wasn't impressed. It seemed a little too "basic" in information. (Maybe that is a good sign? Maybe that means I'm finally learning something!?)

Thanks for the heads-up on the show lacombe. I was excited to see the show.

I watched it and did not see any great organizational tips or inovative ideas. Just messy apartments that were cleaned up and new furniture ordered.

I never watch Oprah anymore and havent for years. I wasted my time watching this show.

I think Candace if very talented, but if I see another room with the mosaic glass tiles I'm gonna scream! Her rooms are not exciting me anymore. They seem to formal and "overly-done"--not comforting and homey. Look way too expensive, like you are just trying to impress people.

Love Chico, by the way, but why did she replace half of her crew? What happened to "Hunky" (NOT) Paul, the carpenter, and that delicious sewer, Edmond?

Do the people on her shows actually 'pay' for the room she does, or does the show foot the bill? She has done some gorgeous rooms in the past, but the cost never seems to be an issue or a problem! That would be so nice to work on an unlimited budget!

From what I have read, the clients on the Olsen show pay for everything but have no input on what is going to be done. The client and the designer do not work as a team. The outcome of the project is the surprise.

On Oprah's shows doesn't she always pay for everything? She is known for selecting "needy" persons and coming to the rescue. This was one of the things that was bugging me about this Oprah episode. The single working girl, who got her apartment redone, just really needed a mop and a bucket, and a little ambition. I noticed that they refused to clean out her stinking refrigerator and admonished her to learn to make her bed in the morning. The problem with these cleaning and decluttering shows is that they do not get to the core of the problem and teach the person to make changes in their life and way of thinking that got them into the mess in the first place.

Remember the 'Queer Eye For The Straight Guy' shows? Did you catch the reunion update show? They caught one couple who had scurried to clean when they heard the guys wer coming back and piled everything to the ceiling in the tub and pulled the curtain. Some of the guys they did not even put on the update show because when they went back a year later they were living like pigs and had ruined all the new furniture and clothing they were given.

I did pick up a tip from watching this show (I'm a little slow... we have Tivo, so I just watched this show last night). I am a big fan of FLOR tiles, and I love that Candace hung them on the wall and used them as corkboards. I wasn't quite convinced that it would really work, so I tried sticking a pushpin into one of the tile samples I have, and it does work -- particularly with the very-low (almost-no) pile tiles. I thought that was a brilliant idea. For anyone who didn't see -- she hung the tiles on the wall in a checkerboard pattern (I think she used 6-8 tiles total) with double-sided tape.

sue, that's a great tip. Would look cool and be fabulous for sound insulation as well, say in a kid's bedroom...Thanks for posting it.
