Granite and Backsplash are in!

My granite and backsplash were installed today! I'm so happy how my kitchen is coming out and wanted to share with everyone. Granite was install this morning and then backsplash was installed this afternoon. The backsplash still has to be grouted tomorrow. My sink also will be hooked up tomorrow and my stove will be plugged in. I still have the cardboard covering my floor since the work is not completely done. Some window molding also has to be installed tomorrow. My GC said that everything should be wrapped up by tomorrow.

I can't believe how fast and wonderful everything has been going. The only hitch is very minor. My refrigerator ice maker is working fine, but my water dispenser is not dispensing water. I THINK the water line in the refrig may be frozen.

That turned out really nice. The granite and backsplash look great together and with your cabinets look so warm and sunny. You will enjoy being in this happy space :)

HI Mustangs! :) I had a full-height granite backsplash in my former home. It was 3cm...only because that's what they carried. If it's the same as your counters, at least it'll come from the same slab(s) and you'll know it matches. A caution...for some reason, my builder insisted the backsplash go in before my appliance garage, because that's what he "normally" does. Due to the unplanned thickness (most people before me had 4" backsplashes and somehow the appliance garage measurements were "standard"), the sides of my garage had to be cut down to fit flush with the front of the upper cabinet. The extra thickness inside the garage reduced the amount of space I had. Of course the shortfall of space meant my perfectly planned/measured, well-thought out toaster oven purchased specifically for that space...would NOT FIT!! Grrrr....I was so mad!!! Lesson learned. Put in appliance garage before backsplash...regardless of what builder "normally" does. Haha!

From what I can tell, full tile backsplashes in kitchens are a fairly recent trend (with some exceptions -- see the 1928 bungalow thread -- though that was more a tiled room than a backsplash per se). When your corners aren't quite square, it makes countertop installation easier if there is a 1" thick backsplash to cover any gap between the countertop and wall. That said, I agree with the pp's that the short backsplash currently looks a bit dated. That might change in time. After all, I don't know anyone in real life who has put in a new kitchen with no backsplash at all, but I have seen some beautiful no-backsplash kitchens on this forum... maybe that will be the next trend. [grin] I haven't decided about the backsplash for when/if we redo our kitchen. We are old enough and have been in our house long enough to take the long view, so probably we will do something that's either relatively timeless (i.e. white tile) or easily changed.

sskit, I agree with Live Wire, while the concept is not new, hanging large format 2cm stone on a vertical wall should be taken seriously. Any well thought-out stone installer will know to ask the right questions and they will make certain other tradesmen are not left holding the bag after the stone is installed. Just make sure the obvious utilities are accessible and the rough in is complete and most importantly identify who is responsible for each task. Another option for the stone installer is to install mechanical clips around the exhaust opening. ItÃ¯Â¿Â½s another way to help pin the stone to the wall without having to worry about hiding the anchors. Something similar to Hohmann and Barnard #432 would work great (again I am sure your stone installer can also provide alternate options). All the best Caayu

3' granite backsplash needed if plan to tile backsplash kitchen?

With a granite backsplash, you'll still have a seam so it defeats the purpose stated by that granite guy. Only time I see tile over a 3" granite backsplash is when they are done at different times (change in homeowners or you decide to add tile in the future). Most people getting new counters will just tile from the counter up.

VERY NICE! I always love white kitchens. I wanted a big change and had a hard time deciding if I wanted to go white or very dark. I guess my next kitchen will have to have cabinets like yours! :)

Thank you everyone for your kind words! As I left the house this morning the backsplash was grouted and my sink is being hooked up. All's that's left to do is for them to plug in my stove! I'm so happy how everything came out.

My faucet is the Delta Allora pulldown faucet. I'll let you know how I like it when I use it tonight!

The floor that we DIY'd is Pergo American Cottage from Lowe's.

I'll take final pictures when the cardboard is off the floor and my table is set up!

I'll also give a list of the details.

I can't thank everyone here enough for the MANY things I've learned. It's really payed off for me.
