Interesting project. I'm confused about the caster attachment. If you attach them behind the legs, even if you cut off an inch, you'd have to have tall casters. I don't quite see that as being a good thing. With the casters inside the legs, especially if you use big wheels, the thing will be tippy. Regarding the plywood back, one option is to leave the plywood that's there and cover it with another piece of nicer looking wood screwed into the frame from the back, using moulding to cover the edges perhaps. Sometimes the original plywood is cut into the recess on the back so perfectly, and nailed so securely, that it is a shame to remove it. If the plywood is a bit nice from the outside, a frame of mitred 1x4s might look good, and provide the needed stability - would look like a flat panel back. I have to say it's a shame to cut anything off those legs- they're lovely. Here's a thought for a different way to approach this, something I've done in my kitchen with a 3-shelf unit and in my storage locker with dressers that I roll around quite regularly: build a custom dolly and put the piece on top of it. For my shelf unit in the kitchen, which has about 3-inch legs on it, the dolly surface provides an additional shelf space underneath, but for your dresser you could close that space off if you want, on at least some sides. I've actually seen a picture somewhere of furniture legs being added to the kick space of built-in cabinets to make them look like free-standing cabinets - that would be the image to go with, curtaining off the base behind the legs. For security in this case you could make cleats on the surface of the dolly to hold the dresser in place. I make the dollies out of 3/4 inch plywood sized to match the top of the dresser, and if it's going to show you'd use a nice quality of plywood. Edge it with some moulding or iron-on veneer strips. Maybe round or angle-cut the corners so you don't hurt yourself on them. Attach the casters to the dolly, and you can do this almost right under where the dresser legs will stand, or somewhat outside them, offering excellent stability. If you want height, you can use maybe 3 or 4 inch wheels, otherwise use smaller wheels but use more of them - an extra wheel in the middle might be a good thing in any case. The dresser you're using looks well built, but even so, the pushing does exert structural stresses the piece was never built for. You could reinforce till you're blue and not really compensate for them. For that reason, I usually try to push or pull on the dolly (often with the help of a foot) rather than on the dressers themselves when I have to move them. It won't make for an elegant presentation, but it'll be serviceable. I have just such a "cube thing" in my large master bath -- they're great for storing towels, toilet paper, etc. And I have "cube baskets" in some squares. My youngest daughter has one in her bedroom too -- she uses hers for books, and the top is covered with picture frames. Before you buy from Walmart.com, I suggest you look at Ikea. They have these things in every shape and configuration -- different colors too. They have that great sale too, the one where you eat in their restaurant and then deduct the full cost of your meal from a $100+ furniture purchase. That comes around about twice a year.

I have considered it! What I run into is-his room has one wall w/the living room, two outside walls, and the fourth wall is the closet butted up to son's bedroom closet in son's room. So just the one wall w/a regularly used room. Son's has the bathroom. Daughter's has the bathroom, living room and kitchen. The living room at least is a "quieter" room to be next to-there's no cabinets or pots and pans, shower, flushing, water running etc. If he was in the kids' rooms and had been off work only a couple hours and the three of us were using the bathroom trying to get ready for school, or in daughters room and we were in the kitchen getting lunches/breakfasts..ugh. We don't tiptoe around, nor is there excessive craziness in the morning but still, it's loud. He would balk at moving. His room *is* a skosh bigger, however! (enough that all of her clothes and all of mine would fit in it, and I wouldn't have to store them in the hall closet and our son's room, *and* she could still have a small vanity) Personally, it makes sense to me for all of us to round robin it-he go to son's room, son's to daughter's room, and daughter and I go to his room. He could put the bed against the exterior wall that faces the neighbor, under the window, which would put it as far away from the bathroom as possible, or under the other window, which goes to our backyard, tho it would be a bit closer to the bathroom. Round robin makes the most sense. Positive it would be a no-go. Not that I won't try tho!

I have a kitchen with 4 walls, no open concept. I have uppers on 3 or the 4 walls - huge bay window and back door are on the 4th wall. I have a LOT of cookware. I have a pot rack for my most used pots/pans. I ADORE my drawers, but I would never have enough room in this 11x15 foot kitchen with three doors and one big window, to put my dishes/glassware in the bottoms drawers. I have one wall of glass-doored full-inset cabinets and that's where 2 different sets of dishes live, plus all my good crystal. The everyday glassware is in a shallow cabinet at right angle to the window wall - very easy to removed glasses from the DW and put them away. Yes, I do have to walk to put my dishes away, but dishes stack and that means only 2-3 trips to get them all there - I only run my DW once a week as I live alone, so it is always full when I run it. I would never give up my drawers! I did opt to have European cabinets for the lowers - wanted a sleek, clean look and more "real-estate". No worry about nicks that way, either. I like the combination - I'm just not a matchy-matchy girl in any way. I just have a LOT of stuff and you have no idea how much went to Goodwill and how much is in the garage cabinets (the ones that were original to the house) that I'm saving for DGS's first apt. Lots of duplicates from my mother's and our Maine apt when my husband was teaching up there.
