Need help with Craig's List pricing--and no laughing allowed

So we are finally getting a flat screen TV and I will be getting rid of the big entertainment center that our old 27' TV sits in. This piece is like the big albatross in the room, and has become the butt of family jokes, but maybe it would work for someone else.....?

We bought it in 1987. It is gray Formica with glass doors and brass accents. It was quite stylish and expensive at the time we bought it,and made in Italy. It's large-108'W x 80'H.

I don't expect to get a lot for it, but thought I'd try listing it just to see if anyone bites. There is a woman selling the identical piece (in black) on my local Craig's List and she is asking--get this--$2,400!!! Lady, yes you paid a lot for it, but you got over 20 years of use out of it and it is outdated!

I thought I'd maybe ask $100-200 and skew the ad to someone who might be able to use the piece for display in their business. (Like maybe a hairdresser could take out the TV piece and use the other piece with the two ends for selling hair products or something.)Then I'll just list it for free if no one wants it.

Since everyone has switched to the wall mounted flat screens, wall units are a dime a dozen on craigslist and most of them are in the free section. I have seen some wonderful makeovers where they have been painted/repurposed etc. But yours doesn't look like it is wood and that would make it harder to redo. Considering all the free ones around, you will be lucky to get even a few hundred for it. And you are right, that other lady is bonkers!

rafor covered all the bases! We were fortunate that Salvation Army took ours off our hands, so we at least got a tax deduction!

As far as the 12" pot is concerned, that would depend on how much plant/s you have in it. Generally sizing of pots with regard to how much soil feeds the plant within it can determine whether it is overfed or overwatered. The roots will go out into surrounding soil and nourished by much soil, it can cause problems. Right now tho, let's assume the pot is ideal for the number of plants yuo have in it. You have listed many common complaints about what happens to houseplants. Yellow leaves can come from: not enough or too much light; lack of or too much ferrilizer; nighttime temperatures that are too high---plants usually prefer cooler temps at night...in the range of 60Âº = 68Âº Overwatering is the biggest concern. When first sighting yellow leaves, if such persists in numbers, that should be your first thought...you are being too kind with the watering. A couple of yellowing leaves once in a while is of no conern...that commonly happens. They are just removed. Browning tips and edges can be clipped with scissors to keep the plant looking natural. But there again, browning tips and edges should be noted for what might be happening. Under or overwatering, too much sun or heat through a window, too much fertilizer, watering with a high degree of salts. (salts can come from the fertilizer) Then too, water that comes from a softening system should not ever be given plants. A tap outside of the system should be used. Another cause of problems is pests that are common to houseplants. Aphids (just like the ones on outdoor plants) meallybugs, whiteflies (again, like the ones outdoors), scale insects, thrips, and the one that seems to be the most found...spider mites. These cause different problems and are treated mostly different. The one treatment that is given most initially, is water. A hard stream can knock pests off. Soap and water solutions are also given and cause no problem to the plant if it doesn't solve the problem as long as soap is not allowed to remain on the plant. You can read many articles on such treatments. Make sure your pot drains well. When you water, water to drainage, let the water drain out thoroughly, then dump what's in the saucer below. Don't let the water sit else it can be drawn back up around the roots.

Oh I really dislike guns. I made DH store the ammo in a completely different place. He's not allowed to keep an armed gun in our house...he knows that is instant grounds for divorce. Seriously! He's got his hunting rifles, but doesn't hunt anymore. I don't mind target shooting, and want to go skeet shooting, but I don't like hunting. I won't go into my feelings on guns (HOT TOPIC!!) but we did not have guns in our house, except his hunting rifle, until our kids were out of the house. As to the jerk, S...I'm STILL trying to get the sheriffs office to call me back. I'm pretty perturbed, and DH is livid. So tomorrow I'm going to go over the head of the deputy that took the original call. I might even consider contacting our newspaper if I don't get some satisfaction soon. I mean, this jerk is still running around out there!! We don't perceive him as a threat, but I don't trust that he's not got a big mouth. I know he wouldn't risk coming by if we're home...he knows DH would pummel him. My DH is a big guy...S is a pipsqueak. And I'm pretty sure he won't come back around again...he knows DH and his friends are looking for him.

Actually, I did read your link. That's what prompted my post. 'Intended for' caught my interest. SLS is a detergent. That's its 'intended' purpose. The package should probably say no 'toxic or hazardous' pesticides or chemicals. But that is what they mean. I think it's safe to take the label at face value in that it doesn't contain any known offenders. I would like to know more about the properties of the SLS and acetic acid they use. Appears you can pretty much eat everything on the list (if its in the proper form and dilute enough). It also appears they are ingredients we're already exposed to extensively in the marketplace. But I'm not a chemist and we don't know the concentrations. Its pesticidal use is also in the form of shampoos/cleaners. I guess in higher concentrations than usual? They are intended to clean and also repel from what I see. I'm not going to dig up the sites I was looking through before, but have linked some interesting ones below for anyone who's interested. Snopes has an interesting article (linked below). Note the paragraph on OSHA's requirements for all hazardous chemicals produced in the U.S. and for their end-use products. Three agencies cleared SLS as non-carcinogenic (OSHA, Toxicology, Cancer). Too funny, LOL Make an offer on the chair. That set brings back memories. We had a set just like that sofa and chair and had a marble top coffee table to go with it. The only new furniture my mom could ever afford to buy. She cherished it! When my cousin was helping us move and the marble off that coffee table hit the street, I thought my poor mom would have a heart attack. That was not a good day for anyone. LOL

I'd ask $300. You never know. People will feel great when they bargain you down.... Your is not so bad and someone may be into it or buy it to use it ironically....

I think you'd be lucky to get 50 dollars out of it. It's very large, not many will have space for something like that.
I'd be inclined to list it for free after a day or two just to be rid of it.

Can you repurpose it? Maybe eliminate the TV cabinet from the rest of the group, remove the glass doors, repaint it and use as bookshelves in a "study"?

Your pictures look nice! Unlike some of the horrible pictures on craigslist. I'd say ask for $200. Do delete and repost it every few days to keep it "higher" in the listings. (Don't be one of those drips that keeps reposting the same item without deleting the older posts though).

Maybe someone could use it as office storage/furniture (not home office). It looks better than some I've seen. Maybe put best offer.

You have the right idea - advertise it as a retail display case. Put some key words in such as beauty shop, florist, etc. Would definitely make a great cosmetics/hair products display. Sell it cheap so you don't have to dispose of it. Looks very heavy.

Exactly my thoughts -- a wonderful retail display unit for a beauty shop/hair products/cosmetics. The shop could add a small TV for kid's videos or even show videos of their own skills and products.

Yes -- price it cheap and ask for best offers.

I want to just applaud you on your style...ummm in 1980. You were HOT! LOL

But really, 200 or 250 and let them bargain you down. Hell I'd buy it for garage cabinets at that price, but it does look like a nice piece (quality wise) and I could see it in an art deco decor type salon really easily.

Hey, in the mid-80's that living room was rockin'! Gray plush carpeting, big green Carson sectional sofa, brass and glass coffee and accent tables, vertical blinds, and the wall unit (the upper part has lights too)! We had the house where everyone wanted to hang!

This is exactly why I am so focused on finding a very classic console to place the new TV on. I want straight lines, warm wood....nothing that is going to scream 2010 in a few years.

would be a GREAT display (and storage) piece for a Mary Kay consultant or a Mary Kay Training Center (where lots of MK Sales Directors meet together)!

It costs you nothing but a little time to put it on Craigslist. I would do it, start at 10% of whatever you paid for it originally, and be sure to include the Ã¢ÂÂor best offerÃ¢ÂÂ tag. BE SURE you mention that they will have to be responsible for moving it, if that is the case.

Honestly, I could easily see that piece in a contemporary setting - grey is a HOT color today, and that, against a deep turquoise wall (THE color of the year)in a modern decor, would be great.

Charcoal couch or sectional. A brass and glass coffeetable for a link to the brass on the cabinets like this:

Some great lamps in something organic like wood. A few pillows to pull together the colors like these, perhaps.

Not everyone who buys on CL is up on the latest fashions. You may even find someone who wanted one just like yours and can now finally afford it.
I'd give it a week at an optimistic price and you can always accept less or just lower your price. Why not give it a shot? CL does not charge for testing the waters.

I'd buy it for storage in my craft room. It looks like it could hold a LOT of stuff. I've been looking for a simple, medium sized armoire or something that could hold fabric and larger supplies. I think your pricing is right on. You've got nothing to risk by listing it at that price with an OBO.

You have no idea how close that coffee table is to my original from the 80's. I saved it along with the matching sofa table and side table. I figured one of my daughter's might want to use it in a first apartment someday, maybe painted black or something.
