Window Coverings for French Doors

Our master bedroom has a wall of windows with French Doors at the end. We have a gorgeous view, but need some privacy at night, so we need to get some type of covering. What are some suggestions for covering both the windows and the door without having it look odd? Thanks!

I just bought some sheer white material and got some straight rods to stretch and hang it over the windows. It lets in all the light but you can't see anything but shadows through the other side. It looked great too.

Try going to Bali Blinds FB page and "Ask the Expert". I've gotten good advice from them. They know what all of the possibilities are. I always say "you don't know what you don't know". It can't hurt to ask. Good Luck!

Window coverings for French doors are a problem -- that's one reason I much prefer the new gliding doors that have "the look" but function like sliding doors: No inswing, easier to cover with a curtain. I have French doors now and am not crazy about them. I have "roll up" fabric shades on each door. Then I have a curtain that can close across the whole door unit -- though we never close them. If I were starting this project from the beginning, I would choose gliding doors with blinds inside the door. I wouldn't worry over-much about these "interior blinds" breaking -- unless I had small children who might operate them roughly. This post was edited by MrsPete on Wed, Sep 24, 14 at 15:37

I decided to put no window coverings on my French doors (3 sets of double doors) that overlook the backyard patio from the living room. The openness expands the space, and I do enjoy looking outside. (And I'll enjoy it even more when I get the backyard landscaping complete.) For my bedroom (6ft unit with glass door and venting sidelights), I covered the wall with 84in drapes. I keep them wide open during the day and pull them closed at night.

Hi There, French doors have lots of options but it really depends on the type of doors you have. Some doors are prefab and their warranty requires that you do not mount anything on the doors. In that case, I usually recommend a rod mounted over both doors with a "pair" of drapery panels that close in the middle and can be pulled back on either side of the door when not in use. If you have wood doors, you can usually mount drapery hardware called "sash rods" onto the doors themselves and use rod pocket drapery on each door. Hope that helps!

Thank you for your great advice! That is what I was thinking too. Usually people put the rod above the transom, but with our situation where the transom is only in the center of the wall and there us sloped ceiling on either side -that would not work. I have plenty of room on either side to stack drapes and I felt like drapes would be the easiest option to quickly close or open. We live in the Pacific Northwest, so the only time the western sun may be a problem is in the summertime. If the room is too hot in the day, I could close the drapes then as well as in the evenings. @edwindsmoz, I have done that before, but in this house we definitley want the windows completely uncovered during the day

How do you feel about outside mount roman shades on all the windows and doors in the room? That way, they can be completely out of the way during the day, and, if properly lined, totally obscuring at night.

Although I am not fond of them the vertical blinds that cover our wall of windows and french door is completely private when closed. I've tried peeking thru them at night to look in my home and I can't see anything.

the 2 step process of turning them before pulling them open however puts them on my less-than-favorite list, plus when closed they clatter if a vent blows on them. I had to buy vent things to blow the air horizontal not vertical. Also when the window is open and they are pulled open they clatter in the breeze and have to be tied back.

kitchendetective, do you mean mounted OUTSIDE the house? Like on the deck? Maybe I misunderstood..
cheepeople, I am not a fan of vertical either, and I can't see putting them in this new house! But thanks so much for the info..I do use them in a vacation house with sliding glass windows and they are perfect there...thank you both fo the input..

I think what kitchendetective means is they way they'd be mounted inside your home.
