Need a rug under table in breakfast area...what size?

We just purchased a kitchen table for the breakfast area, I have hardwood floors and have already seen some minor scratches from the chairs going back and forth. The table measures 3feet x 5 1/2 feet, it has 6 six chairs. With adding 6 inches around for "extra" moving space.... Will a 5x7 or 6x9 area rug work? or something larger? Or should I just stick with felt pads on the bottoms. I have 2 kids ...so I am looking at outdoor type area rug that feels welcoming in the kitchen and deals with everyday wear and tear. Any suggestions, ideas are welcome. Thank you in advance.

First pull out the chairs as if people were sitting there -- and THEN measure the space for the table and chairs ....

And getting the larger rug MIGHT work better .....

For a VERY clear view of the possible size of the rug:

Shift the table and chairs out of the area -- then open newspaper pages and create (with your measurements -- 5 x 7 or 8ft.; 6 x 9ft.) a fake "rug" -- Move the table and chairs back into the place -- and you'll see which size would be your best rug size!

Personally for me think they look beautiful either way. BUT, and it's a big but, I wouldn't want to have to worry about keeping a rug under a table clean. I may love to vacuum, but I it's just not so fun when dodging table can chairs under a dining table. It's so much easier to sweep a bare floor in this situation. But that's just me.

In a perfect world you'd have 36-42" all around the table for circulation, and a minimum of 24" of that space would be for the rug, 30"+ is even better. The chairs need scoot and sit room, and space behind so other diners can exit the table without requiring someone to stand and push their chair in for someone to pass behind them.

First of all, is it possible to turn the table so that the long side is facing forward? I'm also wondering why you have a plastic cover on one of the chairs. The rug needs to be larger than what you have there now so that you can pull the chairs out and still have them on the rug. A small rug also does not look attractive. It's unfortunate that the colors of the chair lock you into a carpet color that is gray, which doesn't look very good with your brown wood floors. Is there a chance that could be changed?

You need around 3’ larger than the table measurements because you want diners to pull back chairs and keep all 4 legs on the rug. Diagram is to scale with a 42” x 52” table in an 11’ x 11’ room. The “rug” is 7’ x 8’. Not a popular size, but you can have one cut to size and blend which could be beneficial to you. I tried doing a square rug, but the 10” difference in width takes away almost a foot of rug.
