Farmhouse sink - Will it fit and where to buy?

I love the way a farm sink looks and would love to have one. I'm just not sure if it will fit in my existing sink space. We're getting new countertops, so I'll be getting a new sink for sure. The sink now is around 30 in. wide, but that can change a little. The problem is the cabinet below the sink. The cabinet doors may be too tall to fit one in. I know you see the front of the sink, so how tall are they usually?

Also, where is the best place to purchase a farm sink (or any sink) at the best price (budget is important)? Also, what's the best material to go with?

Size and cost will definitely make a difference if we go with one or not.

Hi,

Try Blue Bath on ebay. They have a big selection of smaller sinks.

We bought our 30" single farm sink at Vintagetub.com and saved about $450 from what we would have paid if we'd bought it locally. Their customer service was great and delivery on time.

I bought a Whitehaus fireclay sink from Bluebath.com (an ebay storefront, if you search Whitehaus on ebay you'll find it). It is 35" wide outside dimensions with an 8" bowl (I have the garburetor on this side) and a 24" bowl. I paid under $600 for it. I love it, but must say I have had it installed less than a week. Well after I bought it I read of some instances (one or two) on GW of people who had problems with cracking in Whitehaus sinks, perhaps due to thermal shock. I haven't experienced that, and I have an insta-hot on this sink which pours near boiling water on to it. Let's hope I never do. Prior to buying the sink, I had read a lot of rave reviews here for it. Blue Bath was fast and courteous and (at the time I ordered at least, last summer) had a 100% feedback rating on ebay. I can fit my largest pans fully in the large bowl, and with my gooseneck faucet, I can put my kitchen trash bin in upright to rinse it out. Fabulous. Also, in the past few days I have not been precious with using it, and notice no dings or scratches (so far). Also, FWIW, I went with fireclay not just for its looks but in part b/c my friends in New Orleans who had fireclay sinks in their homes there had their fireclay sinks survive Katrina even when the rest of their kitchens/homes had to be gutted.

Yes, I realize that. I meant here on the Houzz site - or perhaps on the IKEA Hacker's site. It would be great to see exactly how to adjust the non-apron sink cabinet to fit an apron sink. We have to do it nonetheless, so I might take pictures and post if I can't find anything else. Our sink is not as heavy as the 30" sink inserted into into a 30" cabinet, so the framing requirements should not be as stringent. Plus, the methodology there was to combine two cabinets together.

As far as I can tell, the nig bummer is that its meant to be a partial overmount with a flatish lip that goes over the counter. Unless you caulk well while installing, its moldville under that lip. I like that it's easy to clean and it always looks white. We got a third party grid that helps to keep pot marks away. The LACK of depth is a relief, I like the sink around 8 inches deep. If she uses 1/2 sheet pans frequently, she needs a different sink as this one will not fit those size things. I have a two burner pancake griddle - the cheap non-stick, for home use kind - and it won't fit that. It can sit on the top, and the front and back handles will rest on the sides - so I can still clean the pan. It will fit a regular roasting pan. The other two things that I don't like about the sink is the faucet is very far back (23" or so) in comparison to 19-21" for most undermounts. It acts funny if its filled with ice - just like a glass of iced tea, it will form condensate on the underside of the sink. I imagine that varies with where you live. I will get you a trash pullout picture soon.

Eliminate the "standard" sink base entirely and go with a 24" deep refrigerator cabinet and a couple of fillers. Build the toe kick and drill the holes needed for the drain and supply lines and then use the fillers to box in the sides above that.

Thanks for the tips. I'm really starting to think a farmhouse sink isn't going to work without changing up the cabinet under it. My DH can cut out the space, but the cabinet doors come up too high. I'm not sure I want to go to that much trouble in our budget remodel. Now what? Maybe stainless undermount.

I don't know what you're decor is like, but you could completely take the doors off and hang curtains underneath the sink instead. I've seen lots of pics and it's really cute. It's what I wanted, but DH said no :hmph:

I'm in the same situation!! I'm getting new granite, BS and a copper farm sink.

Our doors are too tall also. So our carpenter will cut them down for us. My cabinet doors are made like a picture frame, with a panel of wood inset. However, when he cuts these doors down (under the sink only) .... I am having brass mesh inserted. It is quite thick and in a diagonal pattern.

I have a copper farm sink (sitting on the dining room table for 3 mos. now) and got it at Coppersinksonline.com They were great to work with ;)
