Who has Ikea's farmhouse sink? (or farmhouse sinks in general)

I'm helping a friend design her new kitchen and yesterday she fell in love with Ikea's Domsjo farmhouse sink. She's all set to work it into her design, but wondering if anyone has any long(ish)-term experience with it. How does it hold up? Scratches, dings, chips?

It's either this or an undermounted SS double sink in marble counters. Which one is easier to clean, longer-lasting, etc?

I have a single bowl Domsjo in my pantry and love it. I have had it for six months and so far so good. Cleans up beautifully and does not scratch or chip. I have had ss sinks and they always showed water marks and scratched.

Has Ikea stopped selling them? I don't see it on the website.

I spent many hours researching farmhouse sinks and kept going back and forth on what model to buy and how much to settle for. Ultimately, the biggest deciding factor was the warranty. I was very close to getting a Belle Foret, but, it took me FOREVER to get hold of a sales representative on the phone and they told me they don't warranty the sinks! :-( Big downer. To spend several hundred dollars and not have a warranty was a done deal. I finally decided to splurge for a Shaw sink. With a 15 year warranty, I felt much more reassured. The company I bought from, Home & Stone, was BRILLIANT to work with. They were wonderful on the phone answering my endless questions and their representative even corresponded via email with me! (Many other GWers have had success with this company too! Thanks for the tip!) The sink came perfectly wrapped (even strapped to a pallet) and in perfect condition....in 3 days! Plus they don't charge shipping fees! It came to $888. That was definitely more than I wanted to spend, but, considering the reputation of Rohl/Shaw, the warranties, and the service of Home & Stone, I think it was well worth it! Also, quick side note: My sister-in-law works with building developers. She sells the homes once they're built. And, she warned me about going cheap on the farmhouse sinks - they installed "cheaper" ones in the homes and would get calls within several months of selling the home, complaints of chipping and staining. I don't know what models they installed, but just think through whatever you decide to go with! GL!!!!

Believe me, there are NO plumbing issues involved. What MAY be an issue is finding a hardware store--or other source--for the parts you need to do a changeover. The best thing you can do for yourself is get down and climb under your present sink, the neighbor's sink, your family member's sinks, and familiarize yourself with the plumbing that's under there !! While you're down there, check for leaks, and use a ruler/tape measure to get an idea of sizes. Bathroom sinks are usually 1 1/4" diameter thinwall pipe; the tub/shower and the kitchen sink are, or should be, 1 1/2". One thing to remember: the 1 1/2" thinwall pipe hooked directly to the bottom of your sink, and tied into the "S" or "P" traps under there, is NOT NOT NOT the same as the 1 1/2" drain piping; HOWEVER--there are adapters to mate the thinwall to the heavier piping. By the way, you ARE gonna go to the store and find out what a "P" or "S" trap is, aincha?? Dont be afraid to ask Q's, and do realize many of the guys you ask are about as ignorant as you are when it comes to plumbing....many--not all of 'em. THEN: when you find somebody who sounds like (s)he can help you do this project, and they put down on paper the parts you need, the best thing you can do is repeat the process--go find somebody else at another store who can do likewise, and then compare the parts recommended, &c. Maybe this soundz like plumbing 101--you're right, it is. Anything else spellz disaster in the making, not to mention the resultant feeling you bin ripped off and jerked around, and that you coulda done a better job yourself.... if only.... you'd taken to heart the suggestion of: kenn 1RmSchlHse millersport oHIo -- there's a time and place for spontaneity....

I'm not a fan of a sink with an upper over it. I think you need to stand too close to the front of the door, no matter what. But if you are determined to do that, then by all means I would consider using a farm sink and bumping it out. That means setting it proud (forward) of the front of the sink cabinets and the adjacent base cabinets. I have this arrangement (my sink cabinet is bumped out as well) and it makes working at the sink extremely comfortable because I get farther over it. The trick is in the selection of the sink. The classic Rohl fireclays are the same all the way around. The sink on the floor upthread is the same. But some farm sinks have notches on the side to fit against the cabinet fronts. Some have a flange. Before you choose/buy it's important to figure out how you want the sink to look and then choose one that will do what you wish. There are so many choices, even in SS it shouldn't be a problem. One factor is whether you prefer a 0 radius sink (square corners) or a more traditional sink with rounded corners. How far you want the sink to protrude -- mine stick out 2 inches in front of the cabinet. One sink upthread has the curved front and doesn't protrude much. Etc. @ Susan... thats really a shame, I'm so sorry you returned it. Did you see the link I previously posted in this thread? Our sink is a Kohler Whitehaven 36" (also an undermount and its literally 150 lbs), the sink needs supports built for it like the link I provided above. Its currently sitting in my IKEA farmhouse cabinet base and my countertops are scheduled to be installed next week. So I'm confused as to why they told you that. Do you have a picture of the Rohl sink? I'm curious to see why the countertop installers said it couldn't be done. Did you go back and talk to cabinet people? I'm sorry to ask so many questions its just that it seems like you got some shady news from some lazy countertop installers.

I just saw it at the Massachusetts store... I've found that what's on the site (or in the catalog) often has little bearing on what's actually available in the stores :)

As far as I can tell, the nig bummer is that its meant to be a partial overmount with a flatish lip that goes over the counter. Unless you caulk well while installing, its moldville under that lip.

I like that it's easy to clean and it always looks white. We got a third party grid that helps to keep pot marks away. The LACK of depth is a relief, I like the sink around 8 inches deep.

If she uses 1/2 sheet pans frequently, she needs a different sink as this one will not fit those size things. I have a two burner pancake griddle - the cheap non-stick, for home use kind - and it won't fit that. It can sit on the top, and the front and back handles will rest on the sides - so I can still clean the pan. It will fit a regular roasting pan.

The other two things that I don't like about the sink is the faucet is very far back (23" or so) in comparison to 19-21" for most undermounts. It acts funny if its filled with ice - just like a glass of iced tea, it will form condensate on the underside of the sink. I imagine that varies with where you live.

Brickmanhouse undermounted the single bowl apron front Domsjo, that should take care of anything getting under the lip. There is a lot of detailed explanation in this thread. It is a truly marvelous kitchen.

I purchased mine in Ikea 7 years ago. Since its ceramic, I keep it clean and free of scratches by using Bon Ami cleaner. No issues. I just got another one for my second home.

I run a sink replacement business. Virtually none of my customers have double bowl sinks installed; I replace them regularly. Single bowl with an occasional low divide to help the previous doublers make the transition to single. Stainless steel apron sinks are popular although I've got my first Kohler Whitehaven coming up. The Kohler video is wrong, you do not have to replace or even remove your countertops to install this sink.

A friend talks a friend out of marble countertops.

Ours is worn out after 3 years. Looks dingy and has some cracks. Looking at the kohler white haven or Shaw as a replacement.
