Range hood or backplash tile - which first?

For some reason I can't seem to find "the" answer to this. I guess it is the vertical version of the timeless question: "flooring or cabinets first?"

We'll have a wall-mounted hood with a chimney against a big rectangular expanse of backsplash that will extend to the ceiling.

If the hood is done first (or dry-fit and marked), then it is mounted easily on the wall. But it is harder to then fit the tile up against it and then the tilework is specific to tht one particular hood. Tiling first, instead, would be easy, as it would just be a big rectangle without much trimming. But then the hood has to mount through the tile. I suppose the mounting points could be planned ahead of time and allowed for, though.

Am I just overthinking this?
