Subway tile - 2x4 or 3x6???
I have several more days before I have to confirm my backsplash order with my GC. I am agonizing over 2x4 or 3x6 subway tile... My kitchen is not huge (galley style kitchen) and so I don't want to clutter it with backsplash, but also don't want to get anything that is too big for the space. A pic of the kitchen is below. Does anyone have any suggestions???

In 1913, what sized subway tile besides 2x6? Minibrick? 2x4?
Comments (5)Thanks Francois47 and Marita40. I'm starting to think it must have been a N.W. thing. Our upstairs bathroom still has the 2x6 subway tiles and I read somewhere online that old houses (they may have been referring to victorian kitchens though?) had 2x6 tiles only. Just tried to find that link but couldn't. Either way, if you're sure 3x6 is what the old homes originally had on the East coast/midwest, then the 2x6 thing must have been either a West coast thing or a NW thing, I guess! It's pretty interesting, learning about some of this regional stuff. All the 1913 houses of our entire neighborhood have (mostly) the same floors if oak: they're asian white oak and the story goes that they all washed up on the NW coast one year due to some natural disaster of a reason (Earthquake?)...something that happened in Asia (just across the ocean from us). Most of our houses also have incredibly gorgeous old-growth fir (I suppose that would be the same on the East coast?) cause when they used the wood from here at that time there was a major abundance of very old forests. :( Poor forests......See More12' x 24' floor tiles with 2' x 4' subway tile?
Comments (10)Although it looks intricate as hell, the herringbone is very simply, a brick joint pattern with every other tile turned on its side. Look at the pattern for a minute. You'll see that first the horizontal tiles look like steps, with each step being exactly a 1/2 tile advanced from the last. Then comes the vertical tiles doing the same thing. Then back to the horizontal tiles, and so on. Once you get going with it, it's really not as complicated as it looks. The only disadvantage is that your grout joint is predetermined by the tile size. If you lay two tiles longways side by side right next to a single tile cappling the ends of the two tiles, move the first two so their long edge is flush with either end of the capping tile. 15 years agoMy new kitchen is also small, ~9'x15'. I chose the smaller 2x4 because of the smaller scale of the room overall. Am very please with how it turned out.

15 years agoI was inspired by a kitchen in Southern Living, May of 2006, I believe. Because the room was already narrow, I didn't want upper cabinets on both sides or a vent hood. I insisted on a downdraft range, against the advice of my contractor. Now the room seems huge. I have french pocket doors to the left of that counter so I can close off the dining room and the rest of the house if cooking odors get heavy. So far have been very happy with the results. Here is another shot of the area to the left of the range.

The tile came from Home Depot Expo, Hampton bisque (crackle finish) and the grout was 1 shade up from the lightest, sort of taupe. Sorry, don't remember the name. Used the plug mould idea under the cabinets, so eliminated all the outlets...thanks to the smart people here it turned out great! It was all new construction and no one can believe it wasn't built in 1939 with the rest of the house.
