What color granite for natural cherry cabinets

14 years agoWon't your cherry still darken over time? Red Dragon is a beautiful granite, but the red is a little strong so I would be worried too. Red isn't everyone's cup of tea, even personal preference changes now and then. Like you said, it's not cheap. I'd go with something that's a little more appealing to the masses for the granite & bring in your punches of color through accessories (that you can easily change out later) For darker granites, many use Uba Tuba, Peacock and Butterfly or you could go with the blacks like Absolute or Cambria. We have Peacock and that has a pretty carmel mixed in it that would look beautiful with the cabinets. Here's a picture of a spot in ours with a lot of that carmel color. The flash of the camera brings out the greens in it too, but in normal daylight and the typical view, it looks very dark.
{{gwi:1561921}}If you're interested in something with a little punch but is more neutral we put this in our bathroom last week & love it. Our cabinets are maple cognac, but I think it would look pretty with the cherry too. It's called Golden Shore (or Golden Beach)

14 years agoWe just put in natural cherry cabinets, and as lukkiirish said, it will darken over time. It's only been 3 months since our cabs were installed, but I can already see a darkening (which is what we wanted).
We went to the granite yard looking for something like Cambria, but ended up with Blue in the Night. From a distance, it look similar to Cambria, however, close up it has blue specs that jump out depending on the light. We opted for an antiqued finish rather than polished, as it blended with the low-sheen of our cabinets.

Comments (13)I've done jobs with different oil products but used the Rubio only twice. One turned out perfect. It was a mix of White and Pure on rift sawn White Oak. The owner insisted on using a green finish with no solvents and I warned her it was fine except for potential issues with dog accidents. You can probably guess what happened. The second was Super White that we water popped. It ended up with some cloudy areas which points out issues with finishing technique. The floor needs to be sanded perfectly and scrupulously cleaned before oil application, and the finish needs to be removed completely or it will be cloudy. I just finished a natural color job with WOCA. It turned out nice in the end but took a bit of work. We washed the freshly sanded floor with the Wood Cleaner. The effect of the water made the floor look less smooth than desired. We tried extra coats, abraded with an abrasive nylon pad then re-oiled to the same end. Then we re-screened the floor, applied two more coats and it looks great. I think I'd forgo the cleaning step in the future. I like the idea of the Rubio and even have enough material in stock to do my own floor however I like the ease of maintenance and relative simplicity of the WOCA product line. The Rubio Soap is crazy expensive IMO. Coloring my opinion is that my local Rubio distributor is somewhat pathetic. I found a distributor in GA that carries WOCA and Rubio so that will at least put that issue to rest and give me a resource with expertise to draw on. I like the Rubio Smoke, Fumed and Precolor products for the breadth of unique looks it can achieve when used with their products. The bad? It requires more routine maintenance than poly. It's more susceptible to minor spills and stains. You are unlikely to find maintenance product for sale locally, so stock up. I have two older parquet floors in a wood that's no longer available. I plan on sanding it, wire brushing it, then applying a mix of White and Super White with the idea that the floor will go from it's current dark mahogany look, to a coffee with cream color with white in the deeper grain. I don't know that I'd use it in my own kitchen even though I can pay my own workers to change it fairly effortlessly. Comments (11)Sorry, I misled you all. I have been to the local fabricator a few times already and brought samples home. My choices of course are limited to what they have in stock. That's why I was looking at pictures for other ideas. I can travel to a larger warehouse but they wouldn't have samples for me to bring home. Titanium looked gorgeous but is way too dark. Madre Perl turned too gray. River white works but I guess my objection is that it seems so much like the Corian I am replacing. Does anyone have River White leathered? The quartz I've seen looked like plastic in the lighter colors but perhaps I need to revisit them....See Moreweissman

14 years agoOur GC loaned us an older sample door so we could use it to choose colors. We took it granite shopping and also used it when we painted samples of our paint. It wasn't the same door style as we chose but we just cared about our color. While cherry does darken, natural cherry doesn't get that dark - we like its kind of medium color.
If you like contrast, cool colors like greens and blues work well with the cherry. Some of the greens are Verde Sao Francisco, Costa Esmerelda, Verde Butterfly. Stones with a lot of blue tend to be more expensive. Blue Eyes is somewhat more reasonably priced. I love the blue quartzite stones (not "quartz" engineered stone - these are natural slabs made mostly of quartz and will usually sold as "granite" at the slab yard but no geologist would call them that) - Azul Macaubas (which is mostly white and aqua blue) and our Azul do Mar (which also has aqua and some white but is darker overall - it really does look like a blue sea).
The cabinets were a few months old when the picture above was taken and are mostly darkened. Here is the sample door in front of our sink cabinet with brand new undarkened cherry to give you an idea of how much it darkens.
