Yes, but what about the kitchen?

Our local paper has a piece on a lovely 12 acre property and the 5100 sq. ft house that graces it.

There are only 3 bedrooms, but 7 bathrooms and 7 fireplaces.

The listing says, "The owner can harvest this bounty[from 900 avocados, 60 macadamias, and 100 assorted fruit] , prepare it in a fully modernized kitchen..." (That's an awful lot of guacamole!) So I'm looking all over for the kitchen in this place, it's got to be fabulous, right? I think I found it

See back there in the corner? Doesn't that look to you as if it may be the kitchen? What a disappointment! If that place weren't so far out in the boonies, I go take a look just to see the kitchen.

Looks like cathedral-arch golden oak to me. Maybe they were embarassed? (Apologies to those who have or like golden oak).

What gets me is
- 5100 square feet
- 12 acres
- In the boonies
- 7 bathrooms and fireplaces
- 3 bedrooms?

Were the original owners socially challenged? Did they expect their guests to drive for hours to meet them (hence the need for immediate bathroom access), drink at the bar, play pool then turn around and drive home?

LOL. I appreciate Jaxondel's initial reaction to Falling in Love. I too was kind of creeped-out when I opened a shipment from Edmunds' & saw it for the first time! It remained dormant in my garden a bit longer than other bareroots . . . just stood there looking ominous, threatening. I privately changed its name to Darth Vader because that's the glowering image it seemed to provoke everytime I saw it. I hope Maryl is right about this rose getting better over time. Compared with other bareroots I planted last year, Falling in Love was bloom-stingy. Otherwise, I'm pleased with it.

Thanks so much. I really have cut back - I started 200 seedlings (of tomatoes - don't know how many veggies all together), but gave away a ton and lost quite a few also, so am left with only 92 actually in the ground. And I'm not doing the Farmer's Market unless for some reason it becomes incredibly convenient. Not worrying about growing any for anyone but our family - but I do want to do a lot of drying and canning this year - we ran out way too soon last winter and food has really gotten expensive. Plus, I just wouldn't know what to talk about in the summer if I wasn't growing too many heirlooms! First thing people seem to start conversations with is "So, how's your garden?" - then they ask about the baby! But, in all seriousness, we need to really get some staking done and then I'm really going to take it easy and just try to enjoy it. I guess I spent a lot of years trying to raise my kids in poverty and really feeling guilty for everything I wasn't giving them - not things so much as 'country living experiences and knowledge'. Now I've got so much joy seeing them out in the garden (well, don't see the oldest out here much as she apparently hates dirt - but she'll come out if I really need it or beg), and especially having this new little one out there in his stroller or sling and know that he's going to get his whole childhood being raised the way I dreamed of getting to raise the other two. I can't wait till he gets excited about flowers/plants and pulls them up - and I won't have to apologize to anyone (like I did when the middle one would do it in public gardens) because they're all ours!

One towel (for drying hands) hangs on my sink front. Not visible from our family room, as the island hides it. The hanger is a self stick V-shaped "hook" (no hanging loop necessary). I didn't want to take the risk for the adhesive to mar the high gloss front over time, so I pressed a (non adhesive) removable vinyl piece on the front, and pressed the holder on that. My dish towels live in my Lazy Susan corner cab which is next to my sink cabinet. I chose the Ikea Lazy Susan over the corner pull-out specifically for the 5" of "wasted" space between the rotating shelf and the cab sides. So on the sink side I've installed a telescoping towel bar that holds 4 towels easily. I think the same bars that sjhockeyfan above installed in her dedicated towel cab. I'm really glad that for reaching the towels, we only need to open half of the double-hinged door. As opening and closing both of the hinged doors is a bit more awkward. But 90% of the time the door gets opened for access to the towels. So no problem. No problem with the towels staying wet either. Corner cabs are huge and Ikea cabs are not at airtight. The towels dry quickly. Peeps heere on GW typically don't like Lazy Susan cabs and recommend against them. I love mine. It's perfect for storing small appliances, and what other cab offers two 5"x 30" vertical storage spaces? On the other side of the Susan shelf we keep an oversized tray and a huge over-the-counter/sink cutting board. Plus I keep a foldable stepstool and some other odd stuff underneath the bottom rotating shelf. My Lazy Susan cab should be called "Efficient Susan". She works really hard for us :-)

Cherry darkens in response to UV light - it reacts with the tannins in the wood. Generally speaking, modern finishes tend to have UV inhibitors. This will slow (although not stop) the process. Darkening is likely to be more noticeable on natural cherry than stained. It will really depend on how much sunlight things are exposed to and the finish on them. While white is always a classic, so is natural wood. Tastes move over time dark to light and back again. We've gone, over the decades, from bleached blonde to walnut to red stained oak to pickled oak to golden oak to Tuscan cherry to stained alder to grey. You'll always get more mileage out of a mid-toned wood that is neither too brown nor too golden, or at least avoids most of the above extremes. But as long as you're not concerned about how "on trend" you are - do it if you love it.

I never understood those massively huge homes that have such a limited number of bedrooms. I'm guessing that usually means space is used with dual master walk-in closets each the size of my entire kitchen/family room combo, a huge media room for big screen viewing of the latest trashy reality show where girls raised by absent fathers spit at each other, a gigantor entry that can double as a ballroom in a pinch, and bathrooms the size of my family room. Oh, and the kitchens are usually small square-foot wise. Here I go....shaking my head again.

These can't be the original owners. The original owners would hate the bedspread, the leopard on the sofa and the black sheers over that tub.

I wonder if there are complete bathrooms, male & female, for the pool? That would account for two.

I think breezy has it right-they sacrificed BRs for other things. My MIL and SFIL have a home that is over 6000 sq feet. 3 BRs. The master was the master AND another BR, but they basically gutted the entire area. I have to AGREE with their decision, though. Over half of the HARBOR VIEW was a BATHROOM WALL!!!! So now their entire master suite is view. Their new bathroom and walk in closet took up the other bed room.
If it is one couple like my inlaws living there, then that would mean 2 bed rooms for guests.
I'd be more interested to see what the house looked like prior if there were, in fact, changes made to the home. I understand a "lack" of BRs if it is for 1 couple. What I will never understand is the whole "2x as many bathrooms as bedrooms" thing. You only have to pee so many times a day. Maybe the woman was pregnant when she designed it?

I'm going to guess that their septic system limits them to 3 legal bedrooms but they probably have bonus space that can serve as guest quarters. Then again, maybe they just don't like overnight company!

The second photo makes it look like the house is slowly leaning over the side of the hill! I'm sure it's the camera angle...but just how close to the edge is it? And I'd hate to be drinking one of those 'assorted fruit' cocktails and trying to walk down those stairs! :)

The kitchen looks like it has the same design details as the bathroom. Same cabinets, beams...and possibly countertops. If the bathroom 'works' I guess the kitchen does, too...but 'fully modernized'?

How'd you find that photo?! I looked and looked - well now you know why I need the tools to be returned to their official resting places.

The blurb says that this was a new build in 2005 and hasn't been sold since, so yup, the original owners chose what we see. Their garage is about half again as big as my whole house. I asked my DH, who grew up in the country about 20 min. from there, (the nearest town, no less) about limits on the septic size. He says no, you can always do at least 5 bedrooms. This comes up because we just had to replace the septic at his parents' house and learned all sorts of interesting stuff about rules and regs.

How far from places: if the friends were coming from LA, it would take about 1-1/2 hours to get to the road which crosses inland over these little mountains to the east. I suspect the drive from the I-5 over that mountain road to this house would be another hour or more. It's the kind of road people crash on all the time. Motorcyclists love it for the thrills. If they came from Riverside, I'd give it about 1-1/4 hours. The nearest grocery store is in Fallbrook, at least a 20 min. drive over a scenic 2 lane road - when it's not washed out. Temecula would be a little further. Maybe this was a weekend getaway. If so, there had to be a caretaker or maintenance company to deal with all those food-bearing trees. You don't even want to know about the cost of fire insurance out there.

So much for making assumptions. They should've hired an interior designer as good as their architect. Or maybe hired one. For my 2.2M I would want better than 5 off the shelf neo Victorian vanity lights from HD in my master bath. I am a snob, no denying.

Re big houses with few bedrooms....My friend's DH is in the construction biz and he subbed on a local home that is over 30K sf with only ONE bedroom (although there is a servants' suite). These folks don't like overnight company, but do like to entertain lavishly. My friend's DH worked on the 3 storey hydraulic elevator platform that holds the grand piano. I wonder what kind of resale potential that pile has?

I always make sure to have a comfortable space for one guest. Then there's the sofa (in another room) and a blow-up bed.
