Wall light or light bar over kitchen sink??

Would love to see your pics!

We gutted our kitchen and removed a soffit that was over the sink.I have two hanging pendant lights over the peninsula and had planned to have one hanging light over the sink However, our electrician informed us that he wired the light to come through the wall (wired through a box behind sheet rock) and that we are better off to find a wall light or wall bar that would work. Does ANYONE have suggestions on what type of wall light would look nice above our sink? Will it look tacky to have a vanity type light over the sink? If you have this, please share your pics!

I have never seen a vanity light over a kitchen sink. I'm curious why your electrician would wire it that way. If budget allows, I think you would be "better off" having him wire it from the ceiling if that is what you want, rather than ending up with something that looks out of place and that you may end up hating. If it absolutely has to be wired in the wall, is there room for wall sconces? They look pretty but I'm not sure how great they'd be for task lighting.

Depending on where your sink is in relation to your peninsula, you might also consider lighting that is flush to the ceiling or a recessed can so as to avoid too many fixtures hanging down.

If he knew you had a pendant and he wired for a wall light, he should not charge you to correct it. Even if he didn't know and he changed what was there from a ceiling to a wall light without consulting you, I think he should fix it.

I also doubt it would be very expensive to change it if you need to pay for it for some reason. He is just being cranky, I think.

If you have screw in recessed can fixtures and want to visualize the mini pendants without doing the can tearout first--you can pick up a couple of recessed can/mini pendant light conversion kits--Lowes carries a couple (nickel Model #: MPA-1PNK or antique bronze [Model #: MPA-1JBZ]) with no bulb or shade that screws into the existing edison socket, has a decorative base that covers the recessed can. You can play with different light shades as well. We did this for our remodel, and never bothered to do the formal can tearout. I think there may be other conversion kits at Lowes, but the cover and the shade did not match our kitchen. Hope this helps.

I had recessed lights above my sink before I remodeled and I really liked them. I kept them over the sink ( just spread them out a bit) after the remodel. I also think it depends on how high your ceilings are. I like the look of pendents over the sink, but I think you have to have the height for them to look right. I had to work around a bulkhead so my ceiling height was limited. do you have a pic of the space or has the work not started yet?

You actually NEED to put some lighting directly over your sink since you don’t actually have any useful lighting there. The cans you DO have are positioned in such a way that they will cast a shadow when standing at the counter…..the cans will be directly behind you (not when at the sink but when standing on either side of the counter….your body will block the light that you actually want shining on your counter). So it is not merely a decorative thing to add lighting where you’re suggesting. You have zero lighting over your sink which is super important to have simply for function.

'Vanity' lights just means that the finish will hold up in high humidity locations. Use a vanity light anywhere you please but don't use non-vanity lights in a bathroom or other high humidity locations. You are right to be concerned about the glare from clear shades. I would steer clear of them.
