I have to admit I'd try to maximize storage and prep space in such a small kitchen. Now someone can come and get a drink without walking around the cook. Also having the hot pots and the oven in the high traffic zone seems like an accident waiting to happen.

I have to say I like this. Good points too. Thanks! Gives more of a U-shape. The pantry space would be GREAT too.

I might take that sink and place it facing one or the other of the 2 runs with a right angle rather than a diagonal cab.I have a small kitchen and have toyed with running a diag cab like that/I laid out cardboard and pretended to be at the sink and move back and forth with another person in the space[not even at the sink].It's pretty dramatic .You have wasted space behind the sink and the required space into the floor area is a loss. With the right angle and the sink assigned one side or the other you gain some usable reachable space on the side of the sink. One or 2 footsteps in the floorspace translates to a body width or so: in a small space it does matter....in a bigger kitchen,not so much.

Thanks for your detailed comments 'herbflavor'. The reason I put the sink at a right angle was because the window is only 9 3/4" from the corner wall. Otherwise I would have centered the sink with the window. I like the idea of getting rid of the angle, I just don't know what to do with the sink. Maybe put it on the right wall with window on my left? Or left of the window on the back wall?

'Cam349' - The door to the right goes out into an unconditioned (no A/C or Heat) sunroom. It's the old door to the outside that had been reversed to swing out. Likely to help the kitchen after they created the sunroom.

and last pic. Thanks for viewing our CURRENT mess of a kitchen. Regardless of layout, the window is 29" from the floor and will need to be shortened up and replaced.

Can you economicaly "steal" some of the space in the sunroom by creating a cab depth bump out into it? You wouldn't have to move the (probaby) load bearing wall just open the space with headers and poke the cabs out. (I live in timber-framed building so my thinking may be colored by that type of framing; it may be less possible in a balloon- or platform-framed structure and probably not possible at all if you have SIP.)

I also suggest moving the DW to the other side of the sink so that it doesn't open into the main action zone between sink and range when the door is down.

It seems like the new position for the range would make venting to the outside easier - moving it to the exterior wall would make it easier still, but I can't quite figure out which walls might be exterior ones.

Is moving the plumbing (supply, drain and vent stack) an option?

This might help to know what is an exterior, original foundation walls. I used our initial proposed layout design. Since then CAM 349 suggested an alternative.

I have a plumber coming next week to give an estimate on relocating. So I'll get a better idea on any limitations we may or may not have.

The current range exhaust is hooked up through the microwave above and I have a box vent running above the drop ceiling out to the exterior (same as window wall) So the vent currently makes a straight run from dining room wall to exterior wall. I thought I could simply alter the vent with a 90 degree elbow if the range moves to the wall shared with the bathroom. Is a 90 degree bend ok for venting?

I might try laying it out this way: Put all your prep/cleanup stuff (sink and stove) in the L shaped area, and make the smaller wall a storage zone with the fridge and tall pantry cabinets (preferably the deep kind with pull-out shelves). Clumping all the tall stuff together should allow you to keep all the counter space you have clumped together as well and therefore more useful. Counter space between sink and stove can do double-duty, sometimes being used for prep and sometimes for cleanup.

I use a side-by-side fridge because my fridge is in a traffic area to reduce door swing issues.

If it were my kitchen, I'd add another window over the corner sink (as you have it in your plan) so I could see the sunroom, from the sink. I'd move the range to the 'top' or outside wall...and on the dining room wall...have a small pantry/fridge/and maybe microwave above cabinet, by the door to the sunroom.

If you ever decide to open up the sunroom to the kitchen, you could open the wall between them...maybe with a post at the end of the sink countertop if necessary...and have a small bistro table and chairs in the sunroom. It would give you a tiny breakfast area and bring more light/views, into the kitchen :)

If I use the old window into the sunroom again I'm just unsure where to put the dishwasher in relation to sink.
