Backsplash, honed or beveled, w/granite???

Here is my kitchen again.... Since the cabinets are beveled should the tile be beveled? Does it matter.... I think I'm narrowing it down to cracked cream subway, or a light travertine, with a 4x4 diamond pattern of the same tile over the hood; Should i 1) put a 4x4 tile of the granite in the middle of the diamond pattern? or 2) should I run the granite all the way up over the oven? Or just leave the granite out of the backsplash all together.... Help and Thanks!!!!

Your granite is so lovely that I think it would look great on a vertical appliaction. I say go for it as a slab above your range then you could do the beveled. I wouldn't do beveled above a cooktop because cleaning would be a PIA.

I think I'm a bit confused. You mentioned putting tile over the hood. Do you mean on those narrow arrow shaped areas of wall showing on either side of the top of the hood between the hood and the cabinets near the ceiling? If that's what you mean, then I say NO. The hood stands on it's own. I wouldn't put anything up there.

And you mentioned the oven. Where is that in the kitchen? I don't see it. Do you mean the range?

I wouldn't do granite as a bs in your space. IMHO, granite on the bs in your kitchen would look like a cheap builders solution, too busy, or that you didn't take the time to think about finding tile. Your kitchen is so lovely, clean, and soothing as it is. But this is coming from someone who doesn't like granite up on vertical surfaces in the kitchen. Let the stone grace your lovely horizontals and put a suitable tile on the bs.

Your tile should not/need not be beveled because your cabs are. There's no "rule" about that. If you like beveled, do it because you like it.

Well, I stumbled across this post and think I may have found the granite I've been looking for, so thanks for posting these photos last year! I'm also looking for a granite with the color/look of soapstone and really LOVE your countertop photos (and the whole kitchen)! If you are still checking this post, I'd love to know if you still love your honed / enhanced Virginia / Jet Mist granite counters? Are they easy to keep clean? Do you find the honed finish is susceptible to staining? I'm having a hard time finding a soapstone that is within my budget (it does not seem to be very popular in in my area - Southwest Virginia) and also the slabs are apparently smaller and I need something to cover a 36" deep peninsula without a seam down the middle. I have been worried that the Virginia Mist is too light in color but in these photos, your stone that was treated with enhancer appears dark gray / almost black, much like newly oiled soapstone. Is that how you would describe it? I know photos can sometimes be deceiving (based on available light/etc. so I wanted to ask you what color it "reads" in most normal light conditions -- would you describe it as more medium gray, dark dray, or black? Does the enhancer darken the stone permanently or do you have to reapply periodically? Do you re-seal your own counters or is it better to have the honed finish sealed professionally each year? Has anyone used beveled subway tiles for the backsplash?

What a great kitchen, jeanteach - I love the red accents! My backsplash is a subway tile with a very slight bezel. I was hesitant about that aspect of it, but it turned out really nice - the bezel gives it a slight bit of dimension and highlights the grout. (I wish I'd chosen a slightly darker grout color - I wanted a grout color that would disappear, which it does, but I actually liked it better before it dried and it was darker.) It’s depeds on which one are you getting the original soapstone (from the earth) or the silestone(quartz) soapstone... Origiinal soapstone is cheaper than quartz soapstone, only because it’s man made and labor cost is included which is why it cost more than the orignal soapstone. I was supposed to be getting the original soapstone, but there was some confusion and mistakes, and we settled on soapstone quartz. They send me samples which I am not satisfied iwth the color effects.. I like to have more bold veins than the weak lines of veins. And it looks more Grey than Black.. Which is the color I wanted. So, I’m still communicating with the company, both home depot and the Granite design on this matter. Because our order was not what I was expecting. Although I was looking on pinterest and saw grey with bold vein is what I like to see or have. good Luck on your decision. I won’t have mine until hopefully by 19th of Sept. If we resolved this issue on timely fashion. Lisa P.S. I am paying more money than what you estimate on your price range.

My two cents is I don't like granite up on vertical services, either. Too many pretty tiles out there to choose from. I like beveled, with or w/o beveled cabinets.

I agree to not use granite as part of your backsplash. Cream crackle would be lovely! What is your grnite? I really like it.

thanks, the range is going in the 36" wide hole under the hood; I meant granite above the range, but guess that's not a popular idea by what I"m reading. Yes a lot of beautiful tile... but hard to pick
