Hello Bluestar Range owners:

After much consideration, I am planning to replace my current gas range with a Bluestar. But I have a few questions that need your input:

1. I want to minimize fingerprint issues. The cabinets will be white and my other appliances will also be white (except the vent hood). For those who have a color range, do you have less fingerprints leaving on the color panel compared with stainless steel part?

2. If you have a white one, which color did you order? I looked at the color swatch and I think 9002 looks like white. Am I correct?

3. The range will go against a wall. So do I need an island trim? I just want it to be flushed with the wall.

Here's a shot of our 36" Bluestar range.

As you can see, ours is black which will tend to show more fingerprints than if it was white.
I can tell you that fingerprints are not a problem on the painted surfaces or on the SS parts
After using, I just give it a quick wipe with a towel.
Not to clean up fingerprints, but just as part of a general cleaning regimen.
You should know that we have no kids, so the opportunity for fingerprints anywhere in our kitchen is somewhat reduced.
And yes, the island trim works well against a wall.
Incidentally, you will love your Bluestar.

It is good to know that fingerprints are not an issue! I saw that there are different types of textures to choose from - silver vein, river and mini. Can you please tell me which one you have for your gorgeous black range?

As for the island trim, I guess my question is, is it necessary when I am installing it against a wall?

I just spent the last few months looking at ovens. It would be helpful if someone would do a chart. I never found a Verona or a Capitol. I finally found a Blue Star and didn't care for the look. I have a vacation home and therefore two different kitchen setups. Over $6000.00 I didn't look at those ovens Over $3500.00 good quality sturdy racks, true convection oven, continuous grates, high speed burners, quality simmer burners, a must is a better ventahood for higher cpm, quality stainless steel, decorator look Dual Fuel requires 220 wiring. Some of the ovens have wok or griddles and some don't. Between $2000 and 3500, some with better racks than others, continuous grates, high speed burners, simmer burners are a bit high, good stainless steel quality, designer look, a ventahood may be necessary Between $1000 and 2000 microwave with fan is possible for the ventahood, self cleaning, timer, bake modes, convection oven, not as good quality stainless steel, little better racks than lower priced ranges; Between 500 and 1000 low quality stainless steel that can rust, scratch, show burn stains, few with ontinuous grates, most with flimsy racks, has a timer, regular burners, oven light, then there are the differences between the larger ovens and the smaller ovens. Smaller ovens pre heat faster. Take your favorite roasting pan and perhaps a 2nd pan to the store with you and place them in the oven and see how you like it. Bertazzoni height is small. American Range has a very large capacity. The Wolf has a very low simmer burner. The Viking grates are too heavy for me to clean up easily. A lot of the more expensive ovens do not have timers and some don't have temperature indicators or even oven off/on lights. Some knobs turn too easily and my new Kitchen Aid cooktop turns on when I clean. Also, I have to look twice to see if they are on or off. My new Kenmore electric wall ovens have a warm and hold feature and they heat evenly and rapidly. I'll be afraid to use the self cleaning oven for fear it will burn out the electronics. The Bertazzoni burners take an extra 3 seconds to start. The oven needs to be started with the door ajar. Some of the ovens I looked at have oven burners that will light with a match others don't. I liked the write ups on the Blue Star but when I saw it - I knew immediately it was not for me. There is a great deal of discussion about open burners vs. closed burners. I really liked the American Range but didn't want to spend that much money and I wanted a stainless steel top and the one I saw was black porcelain. My last oven rusted (a builder's model) so the quality of the stainless steel was very important to me. Take a magnet with you when you shop to see which stainless steel is better. The Bertazzoni went on sale for just under $2000 and I decided to go with that price. Did I get everything I wanted? - not quite. Do I really like my new oven? Absolutely. The look is exactly what I wanted, the stainless steel is high quality, the simmer burner is not low enough, the high speed burner is more than I need. The information says it is not necessary to preheat. There is no indicator beep when it does preheat. It has continuous grates that are the right weight for me and I find the closed burners and stainless steel exceptionally easy to clean. The oven is a little small but preheats rapidly and I think for my family it will be fine. It has good lighting. The fan noise is like my microwave on low. It turns off when you are through cooking. Some ovens keep blowing and continue the noise. Previously, I never used my self cleaning oven and this one doesn't even have one. I miss having a timer and will be buying something hopefully with a long ring. There are no electronics to burn out so I'm hoping I won't have repair problems. I purchased an oven thermometer to check the temperature. Either the oven or the thermometer is slightly off but not enough to cause any problems. I will probably purchase another thermometer to see which is correct. The convection, I assume, will take getting used to and so far I prefer not to use it. I did use it to dehydraate the other day and it worked fairly well making 'kale'. I like the heavy black knobs and I read that some of the stainless metal knobs on other ovens get hot. The black knobs are easy to read after one day of getting used to them and I immediately can tell if they are on or off. In addition, some ovens let heat out the front and possibly get hot. I am used to the ovens that let heat out the back top and don't feel I will get burned that way. I hope someone will make a chart. GOOD LUCK finding the right appliance for you.

I am with Chris on the height. My recollection was that the BS had to sit at least a certain distance above the counters, so I don't see how they can be too short. You might want to check the installation instructions. As to who goes last, when you say Bluestar, I assume it was actually an installer affiliated with the store that sold you the stove. It is not uncommon that every subcontractor wants to go last. The stove installers probably installed a range in another house not all that long ago, and the countertop guys came along later and damaged it and the customer demanded the appliance guys fix the stove, saying it was damaged when it was installed, but the damage wasn't noticed. As a result, the appliance installers decided to adopt a policy of waiting until the counters are installed before they install the stove. I agree with Chris, the countertop guys definitely need the cabinets installed to do the templates, but no way they need the stove, it is free standing, they just need to allow the space called for in the BS instructions.

Laughable I have a 36" but I can answer some of your questions because I think they are applicable to all Blue Star range ovens. No, there is no cooling fan--that is because there are no electronics--yay!! Blue Star ovens do have a convection fan that you switch on and off (manually, of course, because there is no electronic touch pad). So you can cook with convention or not. I think that the fan runs a bit loud, but I don't use it that often. The fan noise is the only complaint I have about the range, but it is a minor one. I baked a cake in the oven over the weekend. Gorgeous and perfect. Put the cake in and took it out an hour later without touching it. I never have to turn anything. The baking is perfectly even. The oven takes about 25 minutes to get to 400. But I have a 36" so the 30" would be quicker. I am sure someone else will answer about the 30". There was a thread a few weeks ago about the amount of time the oven takes to heat. But I don't remember whether that was a discussion only about the 36". Others need to chime in on the small oven. There is less air circulating, so I imagine that precision baking might be better in the large oven. I think people like to use the small oven more for reheating, but others say it is fine for all purposes. The sticking door is no longer an issue, I think. Blue Star redesigned the door hinge a few years ago to resolve the sticking issue. But the old issue lingers on old threads. Check out discussions of Blue Star and see if the door issue discussion are remotely recent. I have never had an issue. I am so jealous that you are considering a 48" Blue Star. I was salivating over it but I just couldn't rationalize giving up another 12" of cabinet space in my small kitchen. And besides we are only two now as opposed to your 9.5. Yes, I know I am a BS fan girl and I don't want to fan the range wars, but this range has changed my relationship to cooking. I am really in love with it. As I have mentioned before, if you can manage to get yourself to a place where you can try one out, I really think you will be impressed.

Hi Jora, I saw the Techno S the other day in a showroom, I have zero regrets about buying the BS instead. Having said that, I was pitting the RCS closed burner model against it. If you are looking at BS, the only real option is the open burner models. I'm an avid cook, and I can't imaging anything else. Cleaning the cast iron is a little work, but everything comes apart. After awhile, you'll get to a point that you can literally just wipe it down (I'm there now). My only complaint is with the oven racks. I wish I would have bought the sliding top rack. The rack that it comes with is not very easy to maneuver when stuff is on there (since its so wide). I'm planning on purchasing that in the near future. Everything else has been great.

Here's what the BlueStar installation manual says about the island trim:

"All ranges require a backguard. Most models have the option of using: an island trim; 7 inch standard; 17 inch hi-back; 24 inch high shelf. Heritage Classic models require a 24 inch high shelf for all installations.

If you are using an island trim, a six inch clearance between the back of the range and a combustible surface is required. If an island trim is to be used without this six inch clearance, the back wall must be non-combustible and heat resistant material that extends below the top surface of the range a minimum of six inches."

When got our range there was no choice as to texture.
So ours is just plain old Jet Black glossy paint.
Perhaps their "mini" texture is equivalent, but I really don't know.
As for the trim, it is required in order to direct the heat exiting the oven to the back edge of the range and as "calumin" states, Bluestar requires some kind of trim.
If you're going for a less commercial look, as we were, then the island trim is your best choice.

Here's our Bluestar with the island trim. Fingerprints are no more issue on the black, than on the stainless parts.
A quick wipe with a damp towel, and everything looks great. I would think white would be even easier to keep clean. Although I have not heard of different textures available? Ours, like willtv's is just smooth powder coat jet black RAL 9005. The 9002 you refer to is grey white, for pure white, I believe you want RAL 9010. ...and yes you will LOVE your range!

I have a 48 inch range with 8 burners. I have the 7 inch trim piece behind mine even though we have matching soapstone from our counters behind the range all the way up to the hood. This is a heavy range and I did not want to risk having food splatters that might get wedged between the back of the range and wall, and not be able to be clean it easily. I also like the look of the 7 inch trim piece on my range.

I absolutely love this range. It is a joy to cook with it. Fingerprints are not a problem on the painted portions. The stainless portions will need wiping with a dry towel after washing normal cooking splatters, but is certainly not an issue at all. It only takes a few seconds.

I almost got white, but red is my favorite color , and I decided to be bold and follow my heart. It makes me happy every day. I don't mind that my fridge is white (I dislike stainless and have a vintage style kitchen anyway). I tie in the red color elsewhere.

Is there a charge for the color White? Seems that I remember the saleslady telling me that there wasn't, but I'm not sure now?

Yes I was told that any color (including white) other than stainless steel will result in an up charge

Sometimes they run promotions and will give you the option to get a color for free. Check with BS directly to see if anything is coming up.

Or call your local retailer and ask them to check with their rep.

I remember when we went to see a live demo, that was the promo.

Just a note - the RAL colors are industry standards, typically used in powder coating (which I'd expect is what Bluestar does as a finish).

You can search RAL 9010 for example online and see many photographs and color swatches of that color. They're like Pantone in many ways.

You might also find a local powder coating shop that has actual samples in stock of the different RAL whites for you to look at, or even bring home, provided they believe you might have something like a set of metal chairs or a table base you are potentially interested in having powder coated.

I just did some motorcycle rims in RAL 9001 or 9002 if I recall which is an antique white and it's quite creamy, much more so than our Benjamin Moore Cloud White cabinet finish.

Tim is correct, Bluestar uses the RAL chart, with over 900 colors. I went to my local powdercoating shop, and they were nice enough to give me sample metal swatches of the colors I was interested in. Very helpful, since there were several blacks, and reds that I was considering.

So I have a question...could you get your bluestar powder coated after the fact?
There is a floor model I am considering but it is stainless and I really wanted a color.
