Changing from double bowl to single bowl sink - hard?
Comments (39)red lover, I bought the blancowave sink in the link for my pending remodel. Got a deal on ebay, so went ahead and bought it. After just looking at it lying there in the box for a few weeks whispering to me how much I would like to be using it, I finally caved and jerry-rigged an installation in the non-remodeled kitchen over the weekend. (It is an undermount sink, I have laminate counters, it is supposed to need a 42" sink base, I have 36 inches, the hole in the counter for the existing sink was totally the wrong size and shape, blah blah whatever. watch me make it work anyway). So far, I love it. The large side is big enough to hold my largest baking sheet, roasting pan, or largest skillet with handle; the small side is still big enough for a colander or stockpot. This is what I was doing with it Sunday. From January 26, 2012 Here is a link that might be useful: blancowave 42 double...See MoreSingle or double bowl sink
Comments (28)"How many cookies do you people bake?" I use my "cookie sheets" ("sheet pans" to me) very often for following types of activities. (I have three, but have been begging DH to bring home a fourth from work.) -oven roast veggies like parnsips, potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, carrots, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, etc. -under a gratin of chard or potatoes, etc. on to prevent a spillover mess in the bottom of the oven -set out a whole fish or fillet for prepping and transport for the grill -bake herb biscuits -oven cook bacon -use with a drying rack on top to store French toast or pancakes in the warming drawer -oven toast a load of crostini for tapenade, semi-soft or triple creme cheese, fava bean spread -oven toast nuts and seeds for snacking, salads, and cooking/baking -oven toast pita for pita chips -kids crafts -cookies!!! (really!!) And many other uses of which I'm too tired to think. I can fit only one sheet pan per DW load and very often have one in the DW and one soaking. **on topic** I love my single bowl. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the fact that DW get dishes cleaner using less water. Those facts are usually brought up when this issue is discussed. Something about how when DW came into common use, the spread of a common disease decreased dramatically. I use the DW for 99.23% of everything except knives. Anything I handwash gets washed, set on a washcloth next to the sink, dried, and put away. I use commercial quality pots and pans, teflon and no, that go in the DW. I HATE hand washing. Why spend your time standing at the sink when you have a DW installed right next to you? Isn't that why you bought it? I run my full DW at least once a day. *rant off*...See MorePlease help me pick my faucet and sink!
Comments (13)I've had my sink now for 5 years. I love it and so does everyone else who comes into my kitchen. It's upmounted so it's a bit high (no bending) and also pulled forward so I get right up against it. It cleans beautifully with barkeepers and drains well. I have a sprayer and feel one is needed (in whatever form) for this sink. Hand swishing doesn't cut it. I only have 1 tiny ding on the bottom but it's my fault as I just got a sink grid. That has been fabulous (I thought I'd hate it) as it keeps things off the bottom. Even with the full rim exposed (because of the upmount) not a mark on there. We have an apartment with 1 y.o. a stainless sink undermounted in marble. It's also 30" single bowl -- same size as the Shaw's. We alady have 2 dings on the inside of the front rim of the marble where DH hit a pot. Stainless is great. Mine happens to be a few inches deeper than the farm but I don't think quite as comfortable. If I could have afforded to replace my sink cabinet (we just painted) I would have gone with a farm sink again. But our sink base wouldn't work with one. I've been on this board a long time can't remember anyone who didn't like their farm sink. Offhand don't recall anyone who ever switched one out. Heard very few chip stories, perhaps one cracked sink in all these years. Durability doesn't seem to be much of an issue as the Shaw's are made to last. Hard to think of any other kitchen feature as heavily used and so positively. Perhaps other owners will respond but I've always found it to be a ditto-fest when they do....See MoreSink question for double sink owners - bowl placement
Comments (15)Regarding Stretchad's question, we have the large bowl on the left & the small bowl on the right with the DW on the right as well. The Garbage Disposer is on the large bowl. My DH does most of the cleanup and this is the configuration he specifically asked for. He uses the small bowl to soak utensils (b/c they're the things our KA DW seems to have the most trouble getting clean) and also uses the soapy water to wipe down the table & counters. Meanwhile, the large bowl is used to scrape food scraps (no, no composting...yet) and soak bigger pots & pans, if necessary, or just stack dirty dishes until cleanup time. This keeps the big pots & pans off the counter...something I especially dislike if they're soaking. Why the DW on the right? Because that's the side the TV is on & he likes to watch TV while cleaning up! Left/right had nothing to do w/being left handed or right handed...it was all "what side will the TV be on?" LOL! However, the side for the small bowl was determined by the side the DW is on. He wanted to be able to take the soaking utensils out of the sink & put them directly into the DW w/o too much dripping. Since dishes are usually scraped but not rinsed, there's no dripping when they're put into the DW so closer proximity to the DW for those items wasn't a priority. (BTW...There are two versions of our sink...one with the small bowl on the right (ours) and one w/the small bowl on the left.) Judydel...I'm not sure I understand your statement: "... I'm the only one I know of on GW that found a double bowl sink that actually has a full size basin plus smaller basin..." and then "...large bowl...interior dimension is 20.75" x 15"..." Many people here have a double-bowl sink with the large bowl even bigger. The large bowl in my sink, for example, has interior dimensions of 21-3/8" x 18-3/4". It's the Ticor S405D and many people on GW have the same sink. "...smaller bowl...interior dimension is 12.75" x 15"..." My smaller bowl is narrower by approx 2" (10-1/2" x 15-7/8"), but for the smaller bowl that's actual better for us. Less water needed to fill it when we need to soak things...yet it's still big enough to fit my 8qt pot. It really depends on how you plan to use your sink that should drive answer to the single/double bowl & bowl size questions. One thing, some GWers have noted that a single bowl works for them only b/c they have a second sink in the kitchen...no, not everyone says/has this. But if you have a second/prep sink, you may or may not need a double bowl sink. In my case, we have both...a double bowl main sink & prep sink...but they're on opposite sides of the kitchen (as are our Prep/Cooking Zones & Cleanup Zone) across a 6-1/2' aisle, so even a double-bowl main sink wouldn't be much help for us for prepping & cooking....See Moreginny20
