sleek kitchen ventilation options

We are in the process of ordering appliances for the kitchen in our vacation home. We're going for a very contemporary, high-tech and unique design - along the lines of what's in the photo. The colors we plan to use are white, black and red (well, DH wants bright-red, I want burgundy).

To complete the look we want in our kitchen we are searching for "sleek" appliances. So far, we've found: refrigerator will be built-it and hidden (48" Sub-Zero), 36" Induction Cooktop (Miele - KM5773, 5 burners), built-in 30" wall oven (Miele - Masterchef H4000 H4882BP). We are looking for a vent-hood which would complement our kitchen style and "mesh" with the cooktop and oven. And this is where I need some help. I don't want to put in a hood that's going to be huge and boxy, but at the same time I don't want something that's "just for looks". I need something slim, good quality, but with a high power air flow. Any recommendations? My co-worker recommended this forum, and I really hope to get some advice. Thanks!

Why not a Miele vent hood? They have several very sleek options.

You could do something like your inspiration pic and do a soffit that had a large scale liner in it. You would only be able to tell it was a hood from underneath, or if you used the stainless mesh for covering the whole bottom, you wouldn't even be able to tell it was a hood at all until you turned it on and the smoke disappeared. Installing a hood like that will be tricky, so you need to search for a craftsman with experience.

Ceiling ventilation will only be effective (at grease and moisture removal) if it is large enough to capture the rising and expanding effluent. This requires a large area (perhaps 6 ft x 6 ft depending on ceiling height). The cfm have to be high enough for this area to match the rising effluent velocity at the hood. The MUA must replace the high cfm. Heating or air conditioning of the MUA is now an even bigger pain than with more modest flow rates. But wait, there is more: A means to clean the unit is needed, but it will be a lot harder to reach up there. Standing on the cooktop is not advised. A temporary platform over the cooktop may be needed. The extensive baffle or mesh area will require many dishwasher loads to clean the filters. The expansion rate of the rising effluent is extended by air disturbances -- cross drafts and motion by persons in the kitchen. This will lead to a dirty ceiling unless these two factors are minimal, and with the MUA needed for a large aperture like this, it would take a entire wall diffuser to keep the cross drafts down. There is a commercial solution to this; the entire ceiling is perforated stainless steel. The space above the ceiling is a sealed metal plenum that passes the effluent to the exhaust stack. Internal cleaning is performed by intense ultraviolet within the plenum; I assume it is used when the kitchen is not occupied. Ozone would be exhausted by the ventilation. The grease that collects on the underside of the ceiling is not difficult to clean given a couple of low paid kitchen workers. kas

I have a similar layout with my computer desk above the rental kitchen so I smell everything when I am in the vicinity. I installed a charcoal filtered recirculating fan in the rental kitchen to comply with building department regs after I built an addition. I was shocked at how effective it is removing odors. I can no longer tell when they are cooking, even when they are frying fish. And I know it immediately when they forget to turn it on. It's a cheap, easy and quick thing to try before you go through the expense and mess to vent outside - which is the right way to do it.

Right, I've gone back and looked again at soapstone, and I now remember why I didn't give it much of a second glance: 1) we need a 3m slab or else need to have seams, and it doesn't come in pieces that big, and 2) it's too soft for us. We have 3 young children and an L-shaped overhang off of our island, which is a recipe for breakages with that particular material I think. I can just see someone accidentally slamming something down on the overhang bit or trying to swing on it or something and cracking off a section... Our family is hard on kitchen surfaces and I need something that's going to withstand a beating. It's also why we haven't gone with the single-sheet ceramic worktop (which I quite liked the look of as they're so thin and elegant and incredibly durable, but too thin for that overhang). Would rather not have multiple materials/heights there on the island (so, no L-shaped wood overhang on one corner, for example) as I find it too fussy and prefer to have one large big clean workspace for things like baking, making pizza, etc with the children. I absolutely love the kitchen of a friend of mine and it was my main inspiration pic. It's too dark for my space I think, but the island in particular is what I like. That's interesting about the German/Italian dynamic. I've been impressed by Italian ones in the past (I love a Varenna kitchen, just out of budget), but to be honest I met with about 3 different designers touting Italian kitchens when we were shopping earlier in the year, fully prepared to go Italian, and the ridiculousness of some of the form-over-function features we encountered (at a hefty price tag) really left an impression on me... it felt like they were being designed for people who like having large, beautiful kitchens but never actually cook. Features like hiding an already integrated fridge door behind another fairly cumbersome bigger door to create an 'ultra unkitchen', or keeping it 'clean' by only having a single pop-up island plug station to serve the whole bloody kitchen.... which looks great but HOW is that functional design for someone who, you know, actually cooks... or owns any appliances they use on a daily basis and don't want have to lug out of hiding every day... or maybe just drinks coffee from anything other than a French press? I digress. The annoyance is still there obviously, ha ha!! I'm sure they're not all like that, but a month or two of meetings had me running across the border to Germany!

Futuro makes a hood that fits flush in the ceiling or a soffit. It is 54" wide. It is called the Skylight.

Did you see Dean I's kitchen? According to davidro, he has a "sleek venting panel that probably comes out when in use."

SSKIT, this zephyr looks very nice and different but its not quite the look im going for. I was thinking something slimmer. The skylight is actually something I could see in my kitchen (a little out of my price range though!), along with a couple of other models I like by futuro. I really like the "Razor", but it only comes in the wall version so that means I need to place the cooktop by the wall, which is possible, we haven't decided yet. I never heard of this brand, is it good? The features on most of the models sound incredible, and there are some good reviews online.
I also looked at Miele - didn't find anything that works style & price wise.

That's the style I'm going with. I was going to get the Broan because I saw some good prices. I'm not a heavy cooker, so power venting is not an issue.

I bought a GE Monogram slide-out hood vent. It is a wall mount not an island hood vent. It is totally flexible. It can be installed vented or recirculating and can be installed with the ss chimney piece or integrated into a cabinet same as dean's (with only 1" ss bar showing below cabinet) It is same depth as cabinets when not being used (12") and slides out another 6" or so when being used. It comes in black or stainless steel.

Does anyone have any info on the skylight/or a similar hood that goes into the ceiling? Hows the installation process? I imagine it being difficult, based on the dimensions I saw and the manual.

It's currently out of stock for a couple of weeks which isn't a problem because I still have lots of time before I need to order a hood, and I'd like to get an idea of just how much of a pain it's going to be mounting a hood into the ceiling. Still stuck between the razor, skylight and square murano...
