How wide is that structural post? Is the counter going to wrap around it?

Do you remember if I have a plan in the drafting software that's close to your final layout? If so, we could try the upper ideas to see how they look. I'm afraid they're just going to look intentional and well-planned for the overall design. Since they're the elements at eye-level, you don't want them to be a 'miss'.

How wide is the structural wall? I'm not really feeling it. I'm thinking it's going to look like you just plopped a cabinet there when there really shouldn't be one? Cab you repost your layout in this thread?

You wanna be cool, take a look at the replacement cabinet bottoms for those with lights inside - lights the cabinet contents and also below cabinet.

When I first looked at the Nexus Yellow Brown in the store display with the other offerings, I immediately thought it was teak. It definitely does not look like oak in the same way that most people think of oak. If you have a very contemporary kitchen in mind, keep thinking about the Yellow Brown. Doesn't its grain run sideways instead of up and down?

Forgot to ask...how much need do you have for cabinet space? If you have lot already, you don't need the uppers by the sink. Otherwise, why not? You will be creating a niche of a sort in the whole pass-through space because the cabinets will add to the depth. You could treat the cabinet sides and the adjacent wall as a single unit of color if you used paint or something. Think of ways to play up the niche sides--a pair of matching framed prints facing one another? a faux design stenciled (whether it's greek columns or twining ivy or a painted supergraphic text)?

Without the uppers, depending on your taste, you might make an arch effect (rounded or a series of angles) over the sink and passthrough to add drama instead of the rectangular dimensions. Then the matched decorative items would be mounted facing the kitchen on either side of sink unit on upper wall.

Yep... it's horizontal grain. Rhome... you did so many layouts for me I don't recall if there is something close. Structural post is 17 1/2" wide.

I guess I'm just not seeing it. If you're putting a cab to the right of the window, is there a reason you can't do a corner cab and then another upper cab to the left of the induction? That will be alot closer for you to put away glasses. Seems like along walk from the DW to the structural post. Maybe my other vote would be for open shelving on the post to match the shelving above the bakers table?

Ok, I wrote all this once, and it would never 'preview' so I could submit it. I'll try again:

I can't see just sticking the cabinet to that area with only an inch on each side. If the post or the sheetrock on that post is at all wavy or out of plumb, it would really show.

How about a different idea...1) Framed in, inset shelves like Malhgold's. But they'd only be about 9 or 10 inches wide. Or how about something more decorative...Something eclectic/funky/traditional/unfitted to connect with the baker's table, like a metal shelf or corbels with shelves?

Did you ever figure out how to post your plans without stretching the grid squares (and everything else) sideways? Just that much distortion to the scale and proportion makes the layout more difficult to perceive properly.

As the person who asked the question about where glasses would go, I take some responsibility for creating this dilemma.

I do like the idea of doing an upper at the right end of the countertop run, on the structural wall. If you are going to do uppers at the left end of the kitchen flanking the window, I would keep them the same (even though the two wall lengths are different. Because of my preference for symmetry, I would want them to have the same reveal on either side of the window. (However, your kitchen is not symmetrical overall, and symmetry is not a big issue for many/most people. I'm wierd that way.)

I think it is totally OK to put stainless shelving above the baker's table. It will make sense visually because you will not have lower cabinets, but rather, a piece of furniture.

OK gals... orginally I wanted no uppers, then re-thought to just gain some glass storage and for the coffee stuff. I don't want a corner upper or uppers surrounding. So... I'll go back to my original plan of just putting some artwork or something on that post and letting it be. Bmore encouraged to me re-think my uppers and I TRIED! Guess I'm not much of an upper girl. I'm definitely not concerned with symmetry eastbay, kinda obvious isn't it! When you walk into the house, you see that post (as in pic above) I can't see having stuff on shelves there.

So I guess I'll either do two of the glass/aluminum cabs on either side of the window... unless as I go along it looks "crummy" and then I'll consider open shelves to the left. I may even have room in the "coffee upper" for some regular glasses and then have overflow mugs and glasses in one of the 36" drawers. Daily, it's just the two of us and I hardly ever drink out of a glass (peasant that I am). I either have a can of diet coke or a bottle of water in my hand and drink that way at meals as well.

This is trivial, perhaps, and not something I'm absolutely certain about, but I think I'd keep the open shelves on the right and the cabinet on the left, as I remember in one of Bmore's drawings in the last post. The wall and window give the open shelves a barrier or limit (one visual and one actual) and puts them diagonal from the other open shelves you'll have, which seems like better balance to me. It will seem less odd in line of sight with the hood. Maybe you can play with them when you get there... And coffee mugs, etc. can make a nice open display. :-)

Yanno rhome... in a perfect world I'd morph your brain with my brain and create the quinessential balance funky brilliant practicality. You, of course, are the brilliant and practical component... all I got to contribute is funk.

I just put all my coffee stuff in my open shelves (and got rid of all the odd, ugly mugs in the process), so maybe I'm just biased.

I don't have time to read the replies, but the answer (an answer that calls itself "the") jumped out at me: Do the SS shelving everywhere, and put gallery rails around the glassware shelves for security. Or bungees. Or hang glass doors across them.

OOOOOOO.....excuse to buy pretty cool new things! Especially canisters that seal tight. This is So. Florida which can be bug central if you're not careful.

Maybe some kind of shelving/cabinet thing on the short wall of the dining room side to display inherited stemware.

Could you make that post bigger? I don't know if that is an option or if I am even understanding the question but if you make it say 6 inches wider you could put a cabinet or shelf there. good luck!

Oh Lord peyton.... we (as in DH) spent much time and muscle narrowing (by about 18") and fortifying that structural post to give the small house a feeling of openness and to take advantage of the view outside. Thanks for the time and thought about I"m not going to put anything but some wonderful lovely find of some kind there. Got to find something colorful/artsy... something that'll look good from when you walk in the front door.

I love the idea of no uppers. If I could do it in my house, I would. My last house didn't have any uppers when I remodeled, just a big pantry cabinet. And, the good thing about that is that you can always add. Stainless open shelves will look great If you need more, add more. I think a cabinet on that post would look out of place. My 2 cents!

I've been looking at wooden floating shelves, glass shelves, etc. for my over the refrig area. Have seen a couple good looking options, including one that is a triangle of wire (?) that gives support from above to a glass shelf but can't recall the URL in a hurry. As long as you're not going to put really heavy stuff on it, glass shelves can be very distinctive and they don't have that heaviness of cupboardry. Very airy Florida look. (Forgetting for the moment that you have to dust glassware on these things.)

Hey, I got wona those - well sorta...

Every day glasses and coffee cups embedded in the wall,one layer deep.

I know you're gonna kill me, but try out a shelf bridging across the opening above the sink and also try out going across the window on the ?garage wall. Get dh to temporarily actually put something there - like premade brackets and a 1x8 and see what you think.

I kinda like the steel shelving for the right side but also like two matching sized aluminum framed cabinets equidistant from the window with glass open shelving between them.

The sink opening is going to have two pendants hanging so unless I want to build a suspension bridge....:-)... it won't work.

I"m gonna wing it. It's either going to be steel shelving on the right (Rhome nailed it for me with the corner giving it a natural end) and a cab left or two cabs and call it a day.

I"m kinda upset I'm going to run out of money. That is of course, unless all the people I've given money to have the ability to pay me back. Then it'll be a go again. If not, there are worse things. We've waited this long, so it'll just be several months longer.

IÂm getting me one of those built-ins, sort of. I donÂt know what its future dress will be but my kitchen has more angles than a politician so if I want storage and freed up counters IÂm looking in every corner. This one will hold the tea pot and stainless lidded condiments for tea and coffee near eclectic kettle and sink area. Might make it a little taller, donÂt know yet, I need to stare at it for awhile. rhome, you know whatÂs funny The day I started ripping this out and got about mid way, I took a break and got on the forum here and there was a post (maybe last week) and your nook picture came up. I called husband over to show him your nook which made him feel a bit better since I was knocking holes in walls. Mine, in order to get some depth maybe a non-squared off shape within, I really want to be able to put the tea pot in there. Like everything else in this kitchens weird shape/layout the nook will be a pain in derriere. Tonight I had some wood out, holding it up and trying to figure it out, dropped the wood, went to catch it and speared my wrist on some metal studding shreds. First accident, but IÂm ok.

Ouch! Next time let it drop, I guess? Non-squared-off-shape...Hmm. Sounds like a lot of work! Best wishes!

YIKES... be careful. I love those niches but most of my kitchen walls are solid concrete block. Makes it kinda difficult.
