Backsplash Done! Loving the Lowes $.23 special

Hi everyone!

Well, it's FINALLY done, thanks to you guys helping me get on track with the right tile. We're really happy with it and did it all for about $100. I think we're done tiling for a while, though. Thanks again to everyone for your advice.

I have to tell you, although I basically loved your backsplash when you first posted pictures, their was one tile over the stove that bugged me. It stood out black while all the others blended together. Maybe it was just the picture, but I didn't have the heart to say anything. Since it has been sealed, I don't see that at all! I officially love it all! You've made so many wonderful choices in your remodel, and this is just one more. I'm sure the outside of your house will be beautiful, too, with your incredible taste!

Thanks everyone! biochem101--The roman shades were custom made. I ordered the fabric online, but I have also seen it in a couple of local fabric stores. The name of the fabric is Waverly Saison De Printemps, color Bordeaux. Our paint is BM Aura Honeymoon. It matches the fabric really well. I am sure your kitchen is beautiful. You have excellent taste!! teppy--I am posting two pictures. One is of the large window with the window treatment and the other is the smaller window with the shade lowered. I would have liked to have left off the window treatments, but occasionally I need the privacy. marybeth--Yes, it was worth the wait on the roman shades. I was on a waiting list for several months before the lady was able to get them made. I am very pleased with them and she did an excellent job.

Dianalo, I had originally planned to do a full height BS, with one row of the field tile (so that the sideways outlets are covered by the field tile and I am not having my listello interrupted with plugs and covers), then the listello, then two rows of field tile. If I get subways, though, I will do two rows of field tile before the listello. I had also considered tiling all the way around the window, but I think not now. Steph, I do like the look of your sister's field tile. I was stuck on subways, probably because I see them so often in photos here. The 6x6 tiles (my guess) that she has do look fine, though, and would mean less work for me to install. As for sheen, the listello is both polished and honed. I had not noticed until the saleslady pointed it out to me yesterday, but the center diamond, the tiles on either side of the diamond, and the long thin tiles that outline it are all polished. The outer tiles to the left and right are honed. Since they abut the next tile, there will be(going left to right) the two honed, a polished tile with cut-out for the diamond, the polished diamond, and the right polished tile with a cut-out for the diamond, and two honed again. So having either honed (matte) or polished (shiny) field tiles will work. Last night I did more searching, and I found this glass subway tile that looks like it may work. I is, of course, very shiny. The color looks promising, too. The previous day, I sent for these two glass tiles. They are shown beveled, but I believe I could get them in the smooth style. And here, again, is my listello. Hi Helene, my kitchen is only 11' 4" wide, so I couldn't fit in an island. I kept the peninsula for the added workspace and storage, but removed the larger overhang and stools that we used to have. That gave me more room on the table side for a larger table. I also added the wood hutch piece for more counter space and storage to make up for not having an island. I struggled with where to put the microwave as I didn't want to put it over the range. I decided to put it in an upper microwave cabinet to the right side of the refrigerator. That's the one cabinet I had to have replaced which is why I don't have a picture of it. The microwave that I bought is the GE Spacemaker that you can use countertop or hang under a 12" cabinet. I'm putting it on a shelf. Once the cabinet is installed I'll post pictures of it. Good luck with your kitchen!

Can you do a closer-up photo of the backsplash? it was $.23?!

LOL - the stuff on the side of the 'fridge actually works well as accent color. My stuff on the side of the 'fridge just looks like junk that needs taking care of.

Fori, see below. I used to have it "dressed up" a little more--a nice table runner, decorative stuff on the counter, but we've dissolved into "clean functional" around here with an 18 month old. I have an open floor plan, so all the rooms run together. As for the side of the fridge, it was a compromise between my clutter phobias and hubby's love of photos/magnets/etc.

I will try to find the name of the paint, it was the builder original when we bought it, though I'm going to have to repaint this lovely flat with a more kid friendly version (same color though). I have closeups of the tile, too. It's the Lowes AO basic subway tile. I like it because it has some bevel and a much warmer white than the HD version. The bullnose pieces are limited, but hubby did an excellent job of manuvering around that. 30 square feet was about $100 with all the thin set, special pieces, grout, etc.

I'm trying to wrap my head around "18 month old" used in conjunction with "clean and functional" though. :O

I love how it came out and can't believe you got it all done for that price! Extra bravo to you!

What I really can't believe is you have an 18 mo old and no evidence of that in any pictures. Our 2 little monkeys took over our house fairly early and continue to show their presence everywhere, lol....

Wow it looks great! I'm doing the same thing except mine is from Menards and in bone instead of white. Who says it has to be expensive to be fabulous??
