Prep Sink in secondary island???
Comments (19)Thank you all for your assistance in posting the drawing as visible to viewers, I'm very much a newbie at this...and you are all pros at design! To be truthful, I am the prime driver, I have worked with an island cooktop and sink behind me layout before and it works for me. I know many folks here are against this layout, and I understand their reasons. Being the primary cook I really don't want anyone in my way while I'm at it. Contrary to what many believe, I spend just about 50/50 time between prep and cook time (I'm Italian!!! Lol!). The secondary island was designed as a way to keep my beloved guests visible and entertained, but away while I'm cooking. We have both formal and informal dining in this house and use both pretty often. The china cabinets will house most of the formal/semi-formal entertaining items, the linen cabinet serves the same purpose. The informal dining area is behind the sink wall and we will have a second casual china/cutlery cabinet/drawer combo in proximity. The second dishwasher will be for overflow at entertaining. There is a window at the main sink area, and note all of the doorways in this layout, five in total, which contributed to the layout issues. I will try to get a better detailed drawing out here as soon as I can. I really appreciate your thoughts and insight! Grazie!...See MorePrep sink on split level island
Comments (5)Really do need a layout of the whole kitchen to offer useful advice. Is the island, as Remodelfla assumes, L shaped? Or are you saying it is a single rectangle, 9 feet long and 5 foot wide? If that's the case you are talking about having 2.5 feet on either side of the 48 inch range. If you're putting a prep sink to the side of that on the same lower level, it means that you've got 2.5 feet on either side of the range on the lower level of the island. Unless it's a tiny prep sink, I think that's going to put it too close to the range to give you good working space. I don't understand the reason for raising part of the island (needing/wanting something to divide the back of the island from the range top?) Is that meant to be an eating area or prep space? If the later, I suppose you could put the prep sink on the higher level. But I'd really like to see the whole layout and hear the rationale for the change in height....See MoreSurvey: Use of countertop/prep space on either side of cooktop?
Comments (53)Remodelfla, Just a question, where is your microwave or will you have one? I agree with bmorepanic about the structure of the plumbing being really important to the ability to have trash under the cabinet or not. Also, look for sinks that have the drain towards the back and to one side (Franke GNX110-28 comes to mind). If you have a 12" cabinet on one side of the sink, you can use that for trash cans. If you go down to an 18" DW, that can go up to an 18" cabinet for a large trash pullout. Regarding the height of the prep area, you can always adjust the height by using adjustable legs. I have included a link below, you will have to figure out how to integrate this into your baking center. This gives you flexibility in leveling the cabinet and also changing the height as you go along! Good luck! Comments (38)Instead of upper cabinets I put in more windows. I love the openness and functionality of not having the upper cabinets (there seemed to be quite a bit of the upper cabinet that was not easy to access). Thanks to GWer's advice I have lots of drawers and this is where all my plates, mugs, cups, etc go - so easy to reach! I do have an island, though, which allows me more storage space. I like the idea of open shelves too, if more windows don't work out for you. They keep the open feeling and you won't lose items in the back, dark corners of upper cabinets. (Can you tell I'm not a fan of upper cabinets!)...See Moreclarygrace
