anyone use milk paint to paint kitchen cabinets???

Hi- We are getting ready to paint our oak stained kitchen cabinets a cream/ivory color. We have heard about milk paint being used, but are very unfamiliar with. Anyone out there try it? Like it? Hate it? How might it compare with standard kitchen cabinet paint from Sherwin Williams? THANKS!

My husband use to work for Roger Wright Cabinetry and they would paint the occasional cabinets in Milk Paint if requested. He said that it definitly gives you a certain look but it doesn't cover as good as traditional paints. But it gives a certain washed out look that people who request it tend to like. He also said that it's very tricky and you have to mix it perfectly and apply it quickly. That's the same stuff I use. I have never used white or cream, though I do wish I had milk painted my cabinets. The cabinet maker delivered them with primer already applied, so I couldn't use milk paint. It has to be applied to a clean surface with no finish. There are products that help it to adhere to already finished surfaces, but then it is more like regular paint. I use the oil finish Michael Dunbar uses. I have used just wax and it is not as lasting. My wooden kitchen step stool is now black milk paint. It has also been green and then red. The black has the Michael finish and is holding up great. I think the milk paint site suggests other finishes you can use. I'd love to know how the white paint looks. I suggest doing a sample board first and subjecting it to the kinds of things it will be exposed to in your kitchen.

bbstx, thank you so much for the tips. I have some other remodeling to be done by contractors. These days, I have been busy buying lights and materials for bathroom remodeling. Sorry for my late response. For the kitchen cabinets, I will paint them myself. screedesq, thank you very much for sharing your experience, which is very helpful. I'll use the Benjamin Moore Advance Simply White Semi Gloss. For the primer, I'll use Sherwin Williams PrepRiteProBlock latex primer. The sales lady recommended SW premium wall wood primer. But according to bbstx's referred post, the former should be better. I have the external hinge of bronze color. Did you have the same? Did you change them to stainless steel? I don't know if it would be a good idea to change them to internal hinge and if it would be an easy job. Did it take you a lot of time to degloss and sand the cabinets? Did you use a rotary orbital sander to do the job? The contractor who is going to remodel my house suggested Rust-Oleum Transformations. I doubt it would produce the same good result as SW preprite problock latex primer + BM advance? Really appreciate your help.

If all they need is a good cleaning then that is what you need to do. After which go to Lowes and get Rustoleum paint in a can. It is the most amazing product I have ever used. I will never use their spray again. It flows and levels like you won't believe. It also goes a LONG way. I did our pool surround with it. I used a green scrubby and cleaned the metal coping first. I rinsed and let dry. I then applied 3 light coats. No sanding. None. Rustoleum even tells you that there is no need to sand. They have great primers too but I didn't need them as the surface was in good shape...this is a pool coping that is 25 yrs old !! It looks new now. Has held up well so far..has been 4 months now. Please look at the Rustoleum web site and even email them if you have questions. There is NO reason to sand those cabs if the paint is soiled but intact. NONE !! This will cost you nothing but time and they will look great. Also you can get the paint tinted any color :) c

I wanted to but after doing some research and reading about how tricky and some failures I chickened out. I would like to try it sometime a small piece thought. In the finished kitchen blog "janedibber" had a DIY milk paint island that is beautiful.

I painted a night stand with milk paint. It was definitely temperamental. If you want the look and you're sufficiently detail oriented, then go for it. If you're more of a low-maintenance person, choose something else.

I have not used it yet myself but I do plan on using it in my house. I linked to a site that has some good info. They also sell milk paint that seems to be fairly reliable. I do know it is a permeable paint so you will want to seal it and you will want to find a sealer that will not change the color of your lighter paint.

I know Crown Point Cabinetry has a milk paint option. You can go on their sight and see some pics of their milk paint cabinets and how they apply it.
