Does anyone have problems with their marble backsplash etching?
Comments (6)What I'm seeing on my monitor doesn't work together (marble looks dull and dirty -- more beige while the granite is glossy and grey), but to answer the question, if you put marble on the splash, it will etch. The character and chemical makeup of the stone won't change because you install it on a vertical surface instead of a horizontal one. In fact, your undercounter and hood lighting might make the etching more obvious. On the other hand, splatters on a splash tend to be fewer and smaller than spills on a counter. You have to figure out what bothers you. If you have a low tolerance, look at ceramic or glass. If you think you will be fine with it, look for a better lot of the marble....See MoreVermont Danby Marble - can you really remove etching by yourself?
Comments (27)I have used it on my statuary. It dulls the etch. I have found the green scrubby, dry, does better for me. It still dulls a little, but the etch disappears. DISCLAIMER: This method was recommended for Vermont Danby, not for other types of marble. I decided to try it anyway since I had some large etches. I have honed statuary marble. The marble gets "dull" if you have a spot you work in all the time (I do, so I speak from experience). When I got the etches out with the green scrubby pad, it looks the same as the dull place where I work all the time. I have had my marble for 3 years. I would think in 10-15 years, the whole thing should be dull and worked on - PATINA! Like the other poster above, I also use my island marble for EVERYTHING. I prep on it, serve parties on it, serve my family on it, put the groceries on it when I bring them in the house. It is well used. (Ours is 3x11 by the way.) Not sure what you mean when asking about cost. You mean the cost for comet and green scrubby pads? Maybe $1.50?...See MorePoof! Marble etches gone! (pics)
Comments (70)Hi looking for some advise. I just moved into a house that has five year old marble in kitchen and bathrooms. It is shiny so I think it is homes but it is wrecked and really needs to be replaced. Beside the chips and scratches that don’t really bother me that much. But there are a ton of dull spots. Estimates for repair were crazy and replacing is not in my budget right now. Could I Sams the whole thing myself? And then shine it up or leave it. When the sun hits it there are hundreds of dull spots. The kitchen is beautiful and this just takes away from it....See MoreGranite/Marble polishing Pt 3: Etching and Problems with Refinishing
Comments (7)I'm sorry to say but stone etches. Even granite. A dog's saliva may be pH neutral but it still has STUFF floating in it. It isn't water. There are food particles, skin particles, stomach contents, etc floating in saliva (which happens to be a DIGESTIVE ENZYME = EATS away at stuff before it gets to the stomach). The water will evaporate from saliva (anyone's saliva) but the rest (all the particles listed above + bacteria living off of the stuff floating in the saliva) are left behind. And that stuff turns white. And it etches BEFORE it evaporates. And a HIGH GLOSS finish = SUPER EASY to see problems. Like "Ridiculously easy". A mirror shows you your face very nicely. A mirror-finish on a stone floor will show you the same clarity. Add in BLACK and you have one of the toughest stone finishes to maintain. Actually maintenance (basic cleaning) is super easy. What I meant to say is it is INTENSELY DIFFICULT to keep it looking GOOD. Anyone can keep these floors clean (as in free of bacteria = steam mop). The difficulty is the APPEARANCE after they are cleaned. Sigh. I know you don't want to hear this but your floors do not suite your personality. An impeccable high-gloss black stone floor is a BEAST to keep looking beautiful. It is a housekeeper's worst nightmare. If you insist on keeping it (even for the next 5 years) I highly recommend you send your housekeeper/cleaner to a stone maintenance course. Pay for the course, the airfare, etc. If that isn't something you are willing to do (for yourself and your sanity) then please get rid of these floors. You will obsess over them until they are gone. Ask yourself: Are these floors WORTH losing sleep over? Are they WORTH your mental health? Or ask yourself the reverse: Is $20K worth the next 5 years of sleep? Is $20k worth the next 5 years of my mental health?...See Moreblondelle
