Onions and potatoes
Comments (15)Zone 7, plant your potatoes directly in the garden and plant them about six to eight inches deep. For spring taters, start planting in Dec and Jan. In zone six, I'd plant them eight inches deep and pack them in leaf litter, too. Good success for spring potatoes for me (zone 7b) begins with planting a dozen or so in the middle or end of November and planting a dozen or so once every couple weeks through the first of Feb. The tops of the dozen earliest plantings have come up for me and are a bit frost burned, now, but otherwise looking healthy. (140 taters, total) Planted onion sets in early February (150 ea.) Planted a bit deeper than normal (close to four inches deep). Just now poking up a wee bit here and there. It worked for me last year. We had good results from the onions, and some tasty spring taters, too. The garlic was heavenly. Planting anything in any kind of pot/tray and leaving it outside, this time of year? Yeah, you're planning for failure. There's not enough soil to insulate your roots, sets, the cuttings, seeds, etc.. Interesting experiment, though - trying to figure ways to keep the pots and trays from freezing solid while leaving them outside day and night... Strawberries are planted in our garden, now, and looking healthy (40 ea.). Last year's asparagus seeds are growing like weeds (35 ea.). Rosemary is still green and healthy (one ea.). Basil doesn't like this weather at all. Snow peas look good (over 60 ea.). Garlic looks great (approx. 160 ea.). Early spinach is up and still healthy and has already been thinned. Lettuce is poking up, now. Plus the radishes are showing up, too. A little early on some of this, but you gotta take some chances...and experiment a little. I may have to replant some of the lettuce. I'll give them a couple more weeks before I replant. Yes, a week of sustained 24/7 freezing temps would just about wipe me out. But...we don't really get that around here this time of year. That means I can take some chances here and there. It also means that I get to grow veggies all year around and harvest them eight to ten months out of the year. Oh...I also save seeds from the garden. iow, I can afford to take some chances. ...lots and lots of seeds to play with....See MorePotatoes? Please See pic.
Comments (8)The risk you face using store bought potatoes that have sprouted is that the potatoes have likely been treated with heaven knows what and may even have diseases that you don't want spread throughout your garden. I would recommend getting seed potatoes from a reputable nursery or mail order house. Lastly, if you really want to grow potatoes, I'd recommend Build-As-You-Grow bins. They're cheap and easy to build and allow you to grow tons of potatoes and rob new potatoes very easily. Check out the link. Comments (26)kathleen, I wiould also kill for those individual pumpkin soup tureens. I love them! Your table is gorgeous. I would love to know what was on that pear salad. Walnuts, onions, and greens, and what kind of dressing? It is absolutely gorgeous. Simple but impressive. I never would have thought of something like that. Actually, ALL the tables here were gorgeous. And I would LOVE pheasant salt and pepper shakers. You probably couldn't see, but the silverware I had was Reed & Barton pheasants. So cute, and I got them so cheap. Natesgramma, your plates are lovely. If they wre wallpaper or fabric, they would be toille. I absolutely love toille. They look perfect for thanksgiving. Loves2cookfor6, your table is stunning. I adore that tablecloth. It lends such a festive and seasonal air to your table and its stylishly simple plates, all dressed up with gold chargers. Lovely! Annie, your table centerpiece is the best of all, cause it is with your beautfiul grandbabies in mind instead of stuffy old adults. ntt hou, your table from several years ago was lovely, but I also loved what you did for yourself. You still made a setting that was pretty and comforting to you, and your food looked fabulous. kathleen li, all I can say is this: "House and Garden." that's the magazine your gorgeous table should be displayed in. gbsim, you have nothing to feel sheepish about. Your table looks beautiful! (And I love those dining chairs) bon, I would love to be able to put together a gorgeous centerpiece like that roses centerpiece. Nice to have friend with those kinds of talents. This was fun. I love to sneak peeks into others peoples tables. Sherry...See MoreWalk-in Pantry Potato & Onion Storage?
Comments (33)At Target recently I bought white plastic 'reOrganizables' (house brand) medium size bins with holes in sides that have a gray piece in handle that allows optional stacking. Not expensive $3.59 and very washable. I would guess one would hold 5 lbs or more of spuds. By stacking them, I hope to avoid the "nasty one on the bottom" syndrome. I also brought home for evaluation a black bin with sides made of plastic circles (air spaces between them) which was even cheaper at $2.50. Also comes in white. This would serve the purpose well--it's taller than the other style but has same footprint. But until my pantry is done, my spuds are in a long, thin handleless garage sale willow basket that disappears when set on my new mottled countertop. I rather like it and it's very convenient....See Morealiris19
