Did you buy your appliance(s) on line?
Comments (11)Just one word of warning... Technically, in most states you are required to report interstate purchases that did not get taxed at time of purchase on your state tax return. The $20 bobble head doll off of eBay probably won't trigger any alarms but there was talk at one point of requiring larger retailers to either collect the appropriate tax for the state it's being sent to or keeping records of all sales by state and make them available to the state. I don't believe these are in place in all states or in any for that matter but remember that sales tax is actually tax the purchaser owes *not* the seller. The seller collecting the tax is simply acting as an agent of the state and holding that money in escrow for the state. For instance, I'm pretty sure businesses are forbidden from spending the money collected as sales tax and then just making it up later before their quarterly tax day. At any point, the state can audit a business' books to ensure that they are able to pay all sales taxes collected thus far. I've heard that some states are cracking down on people who put a big fat zero in the state return where it asks about out of state purchases. In these cases, it'll be hard to explain a credit card transaction (which is something the state tax board can get pretty easily) for several thousand dollars to an out-of-state online appliance retailer....See MoreDo you like your appliance garage?
Comments (26)Great pictures that have already been posted! I don't have an applaince garage yet, and have appreciated the feedback in this thread so far. I am planning on adding an appliance garage during the remodel. I prefer the look of solid doors, so I'm gettin the "flipper door" hardware installed on regular cabinet doors instead of using the tambour door. I grew up with a kitchen with a corner appliance garage with the tambour door and we used it all the time. The toaster and can opener lived in the garage and we used each of them a few times a day. The only thing that I didn't like about it was that we always left the toaster out for 10-15 minutes after making toast to make sure that it was cool enough to safely put away. It would have been nice to be able to put it away right after making toast. Maybe if the garage were metal lined?...See MoreDo you like/dislike your appliance garage?
Comments (12)Patti bee brings up a very good point. The location of the garage is very important. It has to be in a spot that is convenient as far as location of the appliances, but not such that it gets in the way. My garage sticks out farther than the other upper cabinets (18") due to the way the lift up pocket door works. Because of this, I had to find a spot for it that had enough counter space in front of it to allow me to pull things out and use them outside of the garage. I went through many iterations of my kitchen layout, and one of the things that gave me the hardest time was where to put the garage. With an 18" depth, placing it on a regular 24" deep counter would only leave 6" of workspace in front of the garage. Thus the placement on the wall end of my peninsula was the ultimate solution. Not only did that provide an entire peninsula counter in front of the garage, but it also gave me usage for a space which normally would not have gotten much use at all. In point of fact, it does sort of break up the peninsula workspace which I use for prep 90% of the time, from the to-the-right-of-the-cooktop workspace. But that works for me because those two workspaces have completely separate purposes so there's not a lot of interaction between the two. There was at least one other spot in my kitchen that the garage could have gone without breaking up the workspace, but again, it was paramount that the appliances be in the spot where I would do my prep most often. So in order to be a good addition to the kitchen, it must be in a location that is convenient to the workspace without taking up necessary workspace. A delicate balance!...See MoreDo you use your appliance garage?
Comments (31)Love, love, love mine! Have been in this house for fifteen years. The toaster has always lived in there (it has an electrical outlet) and the can opener. When the kids were little I would keep a few boxes of cereal in there. When I am preparing for a big party or lets say, Thanksgiving Dinner, I put my canned goods and "supplies" in there. My sister-in-law came over to help for a graduation party a few weeks ago and she was running around the kitchen wondering where I had put some of the party stuff. Open the appliance garage, I told her and there everything was. She doesn't have one and didn't think to look in there. If a tambor door is like a roll-top desk, that's the type I have. Mine can stay open if I want but usually it's closed. The kitchen looks MUCH neater than it would without one. Here is a link that might be useful: my appliance garage...See Moreandreak100
