Please help me -- side swing or conventional oven?

I am hoping for advice on our oven - not so focused on appliance brand but rather whether the new side-swing bosch oven would work OK in this space. We expect to pair it with the new bosch speed oven (or switch to elux icon model). I like the side swing, I know it will clear the obstacles, but I wonder if I've failed to consider something important.

a view from above.
Note that the appliance garage will be flush with the oven. We have a couple feet of counter to the R of oven and lots of countertop on the island.

I love the idea of side swing oven door, but in your layout, with the oven placed on an inside corner it may prove to be cumbersome. If you hinge (swing) to the right you eliminate that counter space for landing and will be forced to use the island always. If you swing door to the left you will be boxing yourself in although that would give you more landing space options.
How high is the oven going to be off the floor? A side swing door is really nice for ovens that are higher on the wall.

plllog, Your response is very helpful and I appreciate your taking the time to write. I had never thought about a swing-down (vs. side-swing) door being a an obstruction if an oven is mounted higher on a wall. So what you wrote makes perfect sense. If the oven is mounted low, as it will be in the island, a swing-down door will not be problem. In my reading about ovens, I missed the concept of ball-bearing racks. That is a feature I definitely would like to have so I REALLY appreciate your pointing out that Gaggenau oven racks do not currently have ball-bearings. I have been considering Wolf but, for some reason, became over interested in the side-swing door on the Gagganau. I guess I also like the big window on the Gaggenau oven. I will probably go with Wolf then. Although, I will also contact Gaggenau and find out about the possibility that ball-bearing racks will be released later this year. I am also going to check out Miele ovens. Like many who have post in this forum, I don't want to make appliance mistakes that I will later regret. :) Rob

I signed up for gardenweb so I could post to say thanks to you both, TSmith and Juno_barks for your comments on the Bosch side swing ovens. My husband and I are in the process of selecting appliances for a custom home kitchen and the timing of your postings is perfect. I am a big fan of swing ovens for function but Gaggenau has been out of my price range. That Bosch (I'm a long time fan and user of Bosch dishwashers) is making them now is great and we are planning to use side swiing wall ovens in this house. There aren't many customer reviews for them on line given they are so new, so your posts are great to see. Thanks for taking the time to post them! For anyone considering side swing v drop down, it is so much easier to get things into and out of a side swing oven. Light years easier as we age. I hope Bosch has good sales of these so they'll continue making them. That Siemens owns Bosch and Gaggenau both (and Thermador is in the mix now too) suggests they saw a market at the more approachable price point that Bosch provides.

Computer challenged here so can't post pictures, but I do have paneled Miele columns next to the double miele wall ovens. The freezer is actually the unit next to the oven. It looks great and there is no problem EXCEPT the miele door swings open quiet a way past 90 degrees - I left the oven door open for rapid cooling, forgot, and swung the freezer door into the open oven door creating a huge divot in my brand new paneled freezer door. There is a learning curve with all these new appliances....

I have the Bosch side opening oven and I love it. So easy to access items directly in front of the oven versus from the side. Oven door swings back quite a way and so it's not as if it is at a 90 degree angle when you stand in front of it. I can't imagine accidentally burning myself on the door. There is a poster who will sometimes come on and warn about the dangers of dropping hot food on your feet - something I have never experienced but I wear shoes in the kitchen anyway because it's common sense. As with any appliance, I would suggest finding a store that has one installed. I was almost certain I wanted one based on reading about it because it made such ergonomic sense but testing it in person sealed the deal - especially since I could also test regular bottom open ovens to compare at the same time.

The oven door would swing to the left.
And yes, that inside corner position is a bit awkward, but do you think a left-swing would box me in more than the conventional opening?
Also I've been considering putting the oven higher, and the speed oven below. I'm wondering if that might work better.

I think I'd skip the side swing there, especially if left handed. And if right-hinged, I'd want the oven higher than counter level so it can swing fully. I would anyway, actually.

Just realized i don't know how far these things DO swing. If the door swings open well past say 120 degrees and is hinged on the left, it will probably be just fine how you have it. Switching the position of the two ovens would be better when you're doing big stuff.

Those are all excellent points - I don't know the angle of the swing! I do worry about it swinging into space used by people, but if up above counter height it wouldn't be a problem at all. More to ponder. Any other considerations?
