Woodstove vs Fireplace and recommendations
Comments (1)THis is my suggestion. You need some expert advice. So go to where the experts live. www.hearth.com This is a site where all aspects of wood heat are discussed. There are dealers of all types of appliances over there and yes, they are EXPERTS. You will get straight answers, I guarantee it....See MoreShould I Woodstove or Fireplace here?
Comments (1)You mention a "big" woodstove. Not a good idea if the home is small. You always size the stove to the size of the area you want to heat. A "big" stove will do nothing more than make you open the windows. From the photo, a woodstove wouldn't heat very well as it can't radiate fully. But that alcove will be very warm. You might want to look into an airtight fireplace instead....See MoreWoodstove in kitchen
Comments (26)I want to thank everyone for their suggestions, comments and experiences. When I was young, we lived on a farm (for about a year and a half) and our only source of heat was a fireplace in the living room and a woodstove in the kitchen. They were not nearly as nice as what is available now, but I do know something about what is entailed with the work (although my dad did most of it). Although it is a lot of work (and I do love our central heating, when the power is working) there is a freedom of knowing you won't be freezing, during long power outages. You can still boil water or heat something up...not everything you eat is going to be cold. We have a very nice, well constructed, and efficient fireplace in the living room of the old house. It does a wonderful job heating the living room and most of the first floor. My husband and his friends use the farmhouse now, for a hunting/snowmobiling 'resort' (LOL their word) where they come in and warm up and have something to drink or a snack. The woodstove is mostly for a little additional heat, some place to put a tea kettle (for moisture and hot water, when necessary) and to give the room some ambience. Here's the amended plan from Summerfield, who had some changes and I asked for a few. Granted, we did not worry about exact clearance measurements, but it's close and I can make adjustments, before an actual building plan is drawn up. I'm just so grateful for such a nice plan to take to others...to show what I want to do with our farmhouse. Even the windows can still be moved over, if necessary and the furniture slid further from the stove. Again, just a general idea of room layout, for me to take to an architect or designer. Since the area (now the old porch) is going to have all new walls and insulation, it will be very easy to put whatever heat resistant materials are needed, in place. I like the idea of using brick or stone behind the stove. The wall between the dining room and keeping room is there for support...it's a load bearing wall and I also need a wall for the hutch. I should still be able to see the fire from the kitchen...and since it won't be used as our only heat source, the window should hold up (with regular cleaning) for some time....See MoreWould You Have a Woodstove?
Comments (39)We've used a Vermont Castings Encore for the last 15 years and wouldn't want to be without it. We absolutely love it! If we ever move from here, we'll get another wood stove for sure. I love not paying for electricity or oil for heating, and the stove makes such a comforting crackling sound early in the morning and heats the house up quick like a bunny. There is no mess. I fill up the wood basket outside on the deck and then bring it into the living room, so there is nothing to clean up. DH empties the ash tray and doesn't make a mess with it at all. If I ever have to live with electric or oil heat again, instead of a wood stove, I'll be very disappointed....See Moresabjimata
