Kitchen TV - Full Motion Mount

We are planning to install a 22" TV on the wall in the kitchen and would like a full motion mount so that it can be seen in the kitchen, while sitting at the peninsula, or in the dining room. At the same time we would like it as flush as possible to the wall when not swiveled for viewing. Are there certain brands that are better than others for this? Any recommendations? How far out can we expect the TV to go using a full motion mount?

We purchased our wall mount at Monoprice (www.monoprice.com). It can extend out as far as 20", and swivels. Monoprice seems to have the best prices for it, as well as for cables and other accessories.

scoutcat, Thank you for the Momoprice link. I'm hoping you can also answer a few questions for me as I have searched unsuccessfully for information on this. How far does your TV stand out from the wall when not swiveled? Does the amount of extension effect that? For example, if I had a mount that was able to extend 8" v 20" would the 8" mount remain closer to the wall? Is an 8" mount too short?

You would need to buy an external TV tuner. The most popular ones for Macintosh are El Gato's Eye-TV and Hauppauge's MyTV. That would feed into the iMac/mini. (Before you choose to go with the mini, however, check the requirements for the tuner card. You're moving a fair amount of data; the mini's FireWire400 card may not have enough capacity and, of course, adding one is out of the question.) If you buy an iMac, you're done: the monitor is already hooked up. If you buy a mini, you'll need a monitor and cable (don't know if that would have to be DVI; again, check the requirements for the tuner card). DVI or not, they're not hard to find and they're not expensive (though DVI will eliminate choosing from the loss-leader "cheap seats"). Before you diss Apple's monitors as "too expensive", consider the quality of the picture you want. Apple's monitors may not be cheap, but they are uniformly excellent. I suspect if they were priced closer to even other high-end brands, they'd sell many more of them. If your viewing does not demand top quality, however, you can do well with monitors from Samsung, Acer, Sony, and Dell. If you're brave and willing to do some research, you could save some bucks buying a monitor directly from the Chinese companies (like Chi Mei) which fab the display screens in the first place. Or ... another choice: Sharp sells a combo monitor/TV which can be used either with the computer or as a standalone TV. They mention Macs (a plus). I don't know as it's cheaper than a regular monitor plus an Eye-TV, and I don't know if 23" will fit. But it may, and other manufacturers may sell similar products. Good luck. I kind of envy you: I have a 20-year-old TV that won't be replaced until it can no longer receive a signal.

Thanks Zep. In look at all of those holders it seems like they would have a bit of thickness even when flipped up. So maybe the plug strip won't really be in the way since I only get about a half inch or so of light rail anyway. Doesn't anyone's TV get completely concealed when flipped in the up position? RMTdoug, I should email you offline. We have to upgrade our entire network. Our old Dell is slow and out of space. We were thinking of going Mac but will probably want to stick with PC. Our multi-function printer is dead and the reviews on CNET and PCmag for the top printers all have negative user comments. We need a good scanner to reduce the mounds of paperwork we have, plus, it would be nice to print on card stock occasionally but I would want the quality good enough for printing out my resume. Then we also need NAS and a new big TV for the family room in addition to our media/TV/music strategy. I just hope our wireless router can handle all that, granted Sonos has its own wireless. I will look further into all of your suggestions - Chromeast, AppleTV or something similar, etc. And will try a spare lap top in the space just to see how PC vs. TV gets used. It's hard to know which one is best for us and yes, what can fit into a holder that can bend to be the least conspicuous is also important. It almost looks like the laptop/tablet holders are different from the TV holders.

I am happy to now have room in my kitchen for a TV. I do a lot of cooking, and it's nice to have one there while I'm prepping, cooking, and cleaning. I live alone, so I'm the only one to affect my decision. Right now I'm just sitting mine on my island so I can see it cooking and prepping, though it's behind me when I'm at the sink or loading the dishwasher. It was sitting unused in my bedroom (I thought I would want one there, but I didn't), so now it's finally getting some use. It's one of 2 TVs in my home - the other is a 38" in the living room. I haven't had cable in years, so the TV only connected by a power plug and a USB plug for the Chromecast I use with it.....and that means it will be easy to move around, or away, should I want the space for other people or things. Actually, there's a 2' long piece of counter next to my fridge that would be a good fit; it's the space where I roll out pastry (custom height), but I don't use it for that very often. I haven't really gotten around to decorating much; I've only really been able to use this space in the last month. I'm even still waiting for the cushion to go on the bench behind the table. It looks really empty in this picture - I never really thought of it until I see it here.

Be sure that everything you want to watch is available from a Roku stick or Amazon Fire stick over Wi-fi. Know where you want to place the TV and make sure there's an electrical outlet nearby. Buy a small (e.g., 15.6") computer monitor such as this Asus VT168H. Make sure the monitor has an HDMI connector, supports a VESA mount, and there is room for it on the wall. Buy a VESA mount of the size required by the monitor. For example 75mm x 75mm for the Asus one (example). The are other mounts that let you adjust the angle of the monitor but they require more room behind the monitor. Buy a Roku stick or Amazon Fire Stick. Attach the monitor to the mount, the mount to the wall, and plug the stick into the monitor's HDMI port. Set up the stick.

I'm not sure about the 8" vs 20" extension. I just measured the distance from the wall. When the TV is against the wall with no swivel, the screen of the TV is about 6 1/2" from the wall. My resident expert isn't home right now, but I can ask him in a little while. Also, maybe the monoprice people could advise.

We bought ours from best buy. On the box it showed the measurements - 9 inches needed for mount and arm when against the wall, 13 inches for pull out. We are mounting ours under the cabinet, as it needs to swivel toward kitchen and toward table. There is not a place for it on a flat wall that will let you see both places- very tricky. 18 inches to play, so 9 inches must be centered lengthwise.

I searched out the thinnest articulating arm for my 26" TV in 2007, and I found this to be the best. But it's still 4". There could be a thinner one now three years later.

sombreuil_mongrel - Thanks. Visited the site where you purchased your Peerless wall mount and also the Peerless site where there was a lot of information on their products. Found one articulating mount for my 22" (depth 3.25 in) TV that is only 1.23" from the wall with arms that expand out 14.46". They also have a pivot/tilt model with one arm that is 1.88" from the wall and extends to 9.31". I will probably go with the former due to its size and verstility.
