I would keep it where it is, gives you a larger workspace on the island than moving it over.

I like it where you have it now because you can rinse, prep, and turn around to cook. Easy... breezy...

Definitely better where it is. You can prep on the far side and turn to the stove, and you can reach it from 2 sides of the island, which increases the chances for it to serve multiple functions for your household. Ours is placed similarly and I think it was a very good decision.

Thanks everyone. Do you think an instant hot faucet would work better at this prep sink, too? Or do most people have them at the main sink?

I agree with others who like it better where it is. One benefit that wasn't mentioned is that it makes for easy access for handwashing. Mine is similarly placed and I had a soap dispenser with hand soap installed next to it. It has worked out great.

As for the instant hot dispenser, we considered putting one there, but decided against it. By the time we had the faucet, the soap dispenser, and the air switch for the disposal, there really wasn't room for the instant hot, too--and our prep sink is a pretty good size. Also, being at the sink that is more accessible for others to use, there is more of a chance of an accidental scalding of a guest with the instant hot at the prep sink. We may have one installed next to the clean-up sink one day, but not having it in the island was a good decision for us.

Was your floorplan the one with the DR where you now have the sitting area and you weren't sure what to do with it? Looks like you've come a long way. Looks great. Weren't you also trying to squeeze in a powder room somewhere? I too am moving an eating area into a family room with a fireplace. Have just started considering a round table, which it appears you may be using too?

There's one thing I neglected to mention earlier. It's minor, but it's something that would drive me nuts about your plan. You have an angled door and an angled counter on your island. These angles are close, but the lines are not parallel. To me, that would always look like a mistake. I would either ensure that the island does mimic the door's line precisely, or I would make it look different enough that it doesn't look like it was supposed to be parallel.

malhgold: Indeed, that's the one. For others wondering, this is the original post. By removing most of the hallway wall, there is more a less a straight line to the bathroom, so no powder room in this plan. By closing off the door to the old DR, the kitchen becomes much more functional with the standard L-shape, and the opposite side allows for a wall for the TV, and is opened up with internal french doors to the LR. This can be closed off for movie watching, or used as a guest room when needed.

Now I realize many people will have a heart attack when I tell them I converted the formal DR to a media room/den, including my mother, but this is what works best for our needs, given what we have to work with, unlike the other plans, which made me uncomfortable for one reason or another. Thanks again for all your feedback. I've learned so much from everyone on GW!

And thanks to the local KD I recently started working with who came up with this plan. None of the other KDs I interviewed thought of this.

I'll be the only dissenter then. The location of the prep sink makes it impossible to land an item on the island from the ref in one go. Stuff would have to come out of ref and either go for a walk - or - place on side cabinet (mw above)temporarily and then moved to the spot beside the sink.

bmorepanic: That's what I was worried about, that extra countertop space to/from the ref. It looks like it's a tradeoff. By moving the prep sink up, you lose space behind the main sink area and oven, and make it less convenient to outsiders for handwashing.

malhgold: I forgot to mention that the DR table looks round in the plan, but I had in my mind to use a rectangular one since the room is rectangular. OTOH, for a family of four, it seems awkward to be seated at a 6-seat DR table. The two far end seats seem too far away. Maybe a round table is the solution afterall?

I think a rectangular table for 6 is fine for a family of four. Just don't use the seats on either end. That's our current set up.
