I am almost done planning but i have 2 questions

1st- Kitchen ceiling will be 10 feet high, cabinets go 8 feet (hood is 9 feet high).. thoughts on height? Should i increase - staggered? I cant afford to raise it all..already blew the budget! but i could raise some areas- corner shelf-- thicker molding?

2nd- The perimeter cabinets will be white with a brown glaze -- tops will be granite- Giallo ornamental (lighter)... The island is a brown cherry wood- top will be caesarstone- its supposed to be a deep brown, but everyone who comes over and looks at my samples says "nice black"_--- ahhh its brown i say... but it does look black - b/c its deep - light would have to hit it right i guess? So do i do the plan as is? The center island than stands out as a rich piece of furniture.... or do i put the granite thats on the outside on the island too? FYI ORB fixtures , Opinions welcomed

This is a close up of granite and caesarstone.*I think it looks browner here- like i said will depend on the lighting- possibly will look browner in the day and black at night?.. thanks

I think it is a matter of personal opinion. We have the white perimeter cabinets with brown glaze( Looks a lot like yours ) and the cherry island. We did Santa Cecilia granite on both. I will post a picture so you can see what it looks like.

Thanks! Housetohome--I actually e-mailed them two years ago about it when the show first came out--got pretty much the same response--although they said something about looking into it (which they obviously didn't because they still don't know!). I don't think her tile is identical to the one I got, but it's close. The tile I got was on the low end of Walker-Zanger. I don't think they still make it. It's the Orielle line 4X6 subway tiles in Tanager (green). I think it was $11.50/sf (which I thought was ASTRONOMICAL at the time...then I started pricing out marble basketweave for our bathroom floor!! Yikes!) I have seen some that are a little more "uniform" lately--these are all handmade tiles with a glaze on that red pottery-type tile--so they aren't all identical as you can see from the picture. I kind of like it, but I can imagine that some people might not. But still today, when I wander through our local tile shop, I still like Walker-Zanger the best--fits the decor of our old house the best. Oh, and kpaquette, the befores really were legendary on gardenweb at the time...and certainly not in a good way. Disgusting and completely disfunctional!! Eeew!! I don't even want to remember what that looked like--we were living in the front of the house at the time with the 80's apartment kitchen and our tenant (who was the previous owner--sold it to us as long as he could rent back for two years) had this kitchen. As I walk through the house, it's hard to imagine now how it was split up into a two-family. Amazing how quickly you can get used to spaces, I tell you!! :) Sarah

Well, I do think there is a problem with that pic you linked, jama. The inspiration island and your virtual feel like furniture to me, quite fine. While I always think of function first, in this case, the BB gives me a sense of disconnect. I also wonder about the BB getting used and more rustic looking over time, thus widening the gap in formality. Personally, I don't agree with the decorator about the piece looking odd without wood. I am trying to see his/her point but I just can't. Did this person give you a reason why? If the pronouncement cannot be backed up with some kind of explanation, I tend to move on. You mentioned in the first post that you can't do soap stone because the room is too small. I would not rule that out just yet. Another way to look at the "too-small" issue is to think in terms of avoiding busy-ness. I would consider avoiding the highly speckled granites or things with lots of movement. Unless you love the look, that mid-tone speckled granite on BP's first and last big pics is what I am talking about. (Thanks BP for providing all the illustrations!) If you go for a more serene look, you may be able to pull off a darker color. Using one material for both perimeter and island, you'll have fewer changes and that may also be better in a small space. I have seen very small kitchens done in dark colors that are just smashing. Think jewelbox. I happen to love the dark island with the dark glossy top in one of the pics above. Then, you could do marble on the backsplash. (I would like to see you have your honed marble!) In fact, I would encourage you to go fall in love with some marble backsplash tile and then revisit the countertop decision.

Since I have white with a cherry island, you might think that would be my automatic favorite, but I'm not loving it so much. Part of it may be that I like to do something different and make it my own (I also have a wall of blue cabients), but it might also be the counters. I have marble on top of my white and a black on top of my cherry. I really like the way it grounds the island, complements the glaze and distressing and adds to the older look (even though marble can be consistent with an antique too) -- and then after putting it all together, I discovered that had we reversed the counters, it would have been an entirely different look to have the white marble standing out in front of the blue. I think that mix of counters and the pop of white marble against cherry on the island is distracting in front of the white cabinets. If you go for white cabinets, I'd want to switch the counters rather than have fighting contrasts. If you go cherry with white hutch, I probably would not make the open shelves white (cherry, stainless, gless) and I would either have a cherry panel on the end of the sink wall or a wall color that doesn't read white. The white surfaces are fighting with the white hutch in the drawings and keeping the hutch from having full impact. I would do the cabinet on the island end -- make the space useful, but you've already gotten there. One thing I've found out on my island is that the 13" deep bases are incredible useful for keeping small appliances right at hand -- no digging to get one that is behind another. If the cabeints line up in such a way that you can use two, it's more money, but may be better use. I don't remember how you are working the island, but mine is straight with 21" deep on one side (all we could fit for sink base, trash and warming drawer) and 13" door on the other -- just in case that helps see a different possibility. My seating is a bar height table just across the end aisle. ;-) Keep in mind that for all the opinions, any of those choices is going to look good. Making it yours and loving the way it makes YOU feel is what makes it right for you.

Lisa - yes, we're in Vancouver! I apologise in advance if this hijacks the thread - I am new to posting and unsure how to send this info directly to you. Laneway housing in RS (residential single family) zoning is restricted to ~750 sq ft, but this particular home is a coach house, which is built in an RT (Residential two family) zone, where you can strata and sell separate from the front house. The sq footage is based on the total lot FSR (floor space ratio) and therefore can be significantly larger than a laneway house. Having said that, this home is 865 sq ft, two bedrooms and a bath and a half. This photo set is from our realtor's shoot, so of course things look wildly distorted with the wide angle lens. Your kitchen is going to be beautiful whatever you do. The light perimeter with the dark island will be really striking. Sometimes I wish I'd done a darker island, for more contrast.

We did ours sort of opposite of yours. We put the lighter granite on the darker island, and the darker granite on the perimeter. We have 12 foots ceilings, and we dealt with it by putting in a coffered ceiling. I had wanted cabinets all the way to the ceiling, but that would have cost a lot. But the ceiling wasn't cheap, either. But I think we way overpaid for the ceiling.

Wonderful choices! I also have a cream kitchen, no glaze, dark cherry island and ORB hardware. We chose Typhoon Bordeaux for all surfaces. It NEVER shows any dust, dirt or fingerprints! Just wondering about the brown.....

I'm dealing w/ the same dilemma; but I'm trying to decide if I definitely do a contrasting island. I think I will, but do a top that matches the perimeter. For some reason my own tastes make me want something about the two areas to match, you know? And tie them together. But it looks like you have made beautiful choices; either way will look great.

I love seeing these finished kitchens-- absolutly BEAUTIFUL! I am also thinking about chandaleers-- i know its more "dressy" but when i see a chandaleer in this style kitchen with some crystals it makes me smile- we'll see!

I think my KD might shoot me if i switch the granite/ceasartstone but I too like the idea of uniform tops and i think the granite might look "cleaner" than the brown....

Would love some more opinions--

Should we do the brown caesarstone on the island (with the dark wood)

or should we do the lighter granite that is going to be on the perimeter (white /with chocolate glaze cabinets)

I'm conserned- will the brown look "black" and will the brown look "dirty?" b/c of streaks etc.. But on the flip side I think the brown might be striking against the dark wood and really show off as a focal point...

suzienj, I think it would look great either way (can you possibly see a larger sample of the caesarstone in a display somewhere?) , but If YOU want to switch, don't worry about the KD. It's your kitchen and you will be living in it for a long time. It is truly no big deal - in reality you only need a couple of weeks before installation for templating and fabrication.

I ended up deciding on New Venetian Gold for both perimeter and island. I considered delicatus and antique brown on the island, which would have been quite similar to what you are talking about as an overall look. I went in this direction for a few reasons 1) I found a beautiful slab of New Venetian that was large enough to do my one level island with no seam and 2) I was a bit concerned that with a large open floor plan it would all be a bit too busy - wanted it all to flow together.

My ceilings were an issue as well. They go from 8 to 9 feet on the range wall - wall ovens and fridge are under the 8 foot portion. We ended up going to the ceiling in the 8 foot section and then carrying through that height for the uppers flanking the hood. The hood itself goes to the ceiling. I just went and measured -in my kitchen the hood is staggered 15 inches above the flanking cabinets. There are thick moldings that also seem to minimize the transition between the two ceiling heights and give a nice finish. Even if you don't go all the way to the ceiling, that could help give a nice custom look. I've also seen many kitchens where there was a separate crown molding done at ceiling height.

Since you mention chandelier pendants , check out Currey and Company. I just discovered them - my favorites so far. I'm considering one for my breakfast table (chandeliers don't work over my island because of the 8 foot- 9 foot ceiling transition).

And... you aren't going to believe this but on top of our other similar choices (cabinets, backsplash) I think I ordered samples of the same exact drawer pulls as you!! Top Knobs? If so, can you tell me how wide yours are (it came in two or more sizes if it's the one I'm thinking of). I'm also curious - do you know what finish you are doing for the faucet, yet? I was all set to order a satin nickel Grohe Bridgeford faucet, but I'm wondering if that will clash or look weird with the ORB hardware.

If I can ever figure out how to attach an in progress picture for you, I will!

We did pick top knobs Oil Rubbed Bronze.. M772 and M792

Our faucet will be Danze Opulence D404214RB- single lever with side spray in rubbed bronze-- it matches perfect to Top Knobs bronze....

Thanks very much for the info suzie - those ARE the same pulls I ordered. I realized that you are probably doing a farm sink. Mine are stainless undermounts, so that's why I am going with the satin nickel. Your faucets are beautiful! I kind of wish I'd done a farm sink, but too late now. My cabinets are from a custom shop out in Lancaster County, PA.

Hi Eastcoast-- I really really wanted to do a farmhouse too- but my budget said to "STOP" lol- i think i have gone "over" in every aspect of my new home budget, so we decided against the farm house-- plus i figured that would then become another "focal" and really the cooktop and island are the focal. That said, i did a stainless undermount with ORB fixture-- i have seen the look and i'm ok with that... Good luck!! Keep posting pics!

suzie - Hmm, maybe I should reconsider the ORB. After all, one is mixing the hardware with the stainless appliances throughout the kitchen anyway. I will check out some pictures. I know what you mean about being wary of too many focal points - something I was concerned about in my space too.

Hi Suzie! Everything is looking great. We had to make the same decision regarding cabinet height because of higher ceilings and opted to stagger them. Our hood mantle (focal piece) is the highest piece and we are doing a pretty wide crown to add interest and "fill in" the space.

Not sure if you considered this- but what about doing a wood top for the island?
If you don't remember me from other posts, our NJ new construction kitchen is very similar to you but the perimeter cabs are dark with a typhoon bordeux (sp??) granite and the island is mocha. We decided on a wood top. I like the look/function of it and it provides a more "solid color" and in my opinion adds to the island's appeal as a focal furniture piece.

GL with your decision- either way it will be stunning :)!

Gorgeous kitchen plan!

Did you ever consider putting the ovens on the wall to the left where the M?W is? I think if you pulled something out of fridge, you would have a space for it right under the M/W.
This would give some dimension to the crown molding on that wall.

Peyton- i did consider moving the mW and Double Wall but KD recco'd this version- i'm thinking with it being a french door refridge that i'm more likely to set it down on the island..?

Crescent - i absolutly thought about wood b/c I LOVE the look but bc i cook alot and i'm not a neat cook- functionality won out with caesarstone/granite (ie water).. If we had done a white island I think i would have reconsidered the wood..

Do you have pics of your kitchen crescent??

Crescent wow your kitchen looks amazing- some similiar stuff to ours... what cooktop did you pick?? We are going with GE monogram...

I woud love to see more!! Can i ask approx how much your cabinets are running? We had a bar in our original plan but the cost of cabinets got out of control

We need to decide on island color by next Monday- we are meeting with KD to discuss molding height and finalize next monday. I think i will start another post and ask peope just to vote on color....

Please share more pics!!!

I replied ont he other thread -- I vote for the Ceasarstone. I have a dark top on my cherry island and the look is striking and rich. I have marble on my white cabinets, and that would have been classic too, but I wanted the island to stand out more as a furniture piece than more cabinets. I also put the same top on the hutch we use as a breakfast and coffee bar and I didn't want marble under the espresso maker. That cinched it.

Suzie... I started a new post with tons of pictures and voted for the casaerstone too.

We meet with the builder on Wednesday to review kitchen budget- so far the KD says we are on target with the budget- except for the shaw sink- but I will get more specific $$ from the builder and let you know.

For the cook top, we decided to do the thermador 36" professional series and chose their double ovens too.

I just bookmarked your posts- I love the ORB pulls you chose and the lighting you are looking at will look amazing in your space.

suzie- thanks so much... i'm in manasquan so lakewood is not far at all, as a matter of fact i have since his advertisements for the njkitcheman...do you have feedback for price points? my kitchen is about 13x16 cabinet area and my quotes have been from 25K-45K. I'm trying to stay with a semi custom with your exact color palette.. I think I could use all of your colors! Where you using Shiloh?

suzienj- met with them today and scheduled the home measurements appt(wasn't to crazy about putting a $100 but we'll see) did like the fact they do everything even the painting. keep you posted. byw, they asked how i heard about them so i told them i'm researching kitchens/blog etc and mentioned someone from nj referred them. he mentioned your name but of course i did not know - too funny. anyway- i'll make sure they know you sent me there.
trying to compare apples to apples and the price( and reputations) will have a lot to do with it.

your design looks very similar to what I'm looking for. I leaning toward granite myself- don't get me wrong the cesar stone is beautiful too but there is something different about granite - color/shades etc. I actually started to think about soapstone but i think it is big bucks- but even to do the island in it. my last name is johnstone, they are sure to think we are two crazy kitchen fanatics- Good luck !
