Do plants respond to your love? Your experiences?
Comments (37)Veimar.. Sing, talk, heck dance with your plants..whichever method works is all that matters. I'd love to attend a group or university where plant studies are done. Are you familiar with Calatheas? Leaves move suddenly like their cousin, Maranta, 'Prayer Plant.' I had one Calathea with large leaves that jerked suddenly and fiercely, one leaf would occasionally knock down a smaller, neighboring plant. I don't know why it didn't happen before. Many mysteries in this old world. Please don't get me started about people who buy plants or BIRDS to match furniture. Laura, I'm okay, thank you. It's too bad your work hours are so long. Or maybe not. Don't you love people who know their minds? lol. Laura, you're joking, but I knew a few people who's s/o's were jealous of everything including inanimate objects. Rodden, can't say I blame you. 5-months of winter! Summer 2013 through winter was the worse, coldest. I think we had 2-weeks in the 90's then back to cool. I thought OK was dry??? Low humidity? I can deal with heat, but when temps rise over 100F, I need more than a fan and open windows. Don't like a/c though. Plants are on stand-still when temps get too hot. Since you have rocky soil, you'd definitely need to amend. What about succulents grown in-ground? Agave, Optuntia? My niece lives in Lake Zurich, but she has artificial plants. lol. Sorry about your mom. I imagine your winters are nicer than our spring...warm enough for potted plants to be outside. What type of plants interest you? Laura, VA got hit with 13" of snow? Unbelievable! Is 2014 a record? Toni...See MoreHow to build your own recessed medicine cabinet?
Comments (1)Alicia, we (I mean DH) built our own MC in the last house, and will do so again with this remodel. No particular trick to it (easy for me to say). Basically a box with holes drilled in the sides to support glass shelves. Have to frame around studs- cuz I assume your MC will be wider than 16". Now I do know the electrical box has to be attached to the side of a stud for support, so am assuming they need to be located near an edge- either side or bottom or top. Obviously, everything has to be wired to a GFI (ground fault interrupter). My DH is an electrical engineer and fully qualified to do complicated wiring etc. If you need to ask how to build a medicine cabinet- maybe it would be best to buy one if you want the electrical outlet inside? Here is a link that might be useful: Robern installation instructions- electrical page 7...See Moreplease show me your built in refrig cabinets
Comments (7)My fridge is unpaneled as well - the compressor is 8.5" and the cabinets above are 12". I know you were looking for paneled examples, but I wanted to show you what I did - it's three small cabinets and might be enough of a visual break between one long 8"x48" panel and three small cubbies above it. Note: Mine look like they open up, but they actually don't. Aesthetically we thought it looked better this way, but functionally, because I'm short, tip ups that high are difficult for me to use. I can get them open but I can't reach them easily to shut them when they're in the open position. The doors actually open left-right/right-left like normal doors; the pulls are just mounted horizontally for the "look"....See Morebuilding your own cabinets?
Comments (31)I built the cabinet boxes and drawers for our kitchen remodel myself. We went that route because we've challenged ourselves to maintain a $5K total budget for a complete kitchen gut job on a $60K house. It took about 4 months of Saturdays so yeah, way slower. I did a mix of rehabbing boxes (converting door bases to drawer bases) and building new ones. I will buy doors and drawer fronts. I did luck out by getting a bunch of cabinet shop plywood blanks for $3 each off CL, and I recycled some 3/4" t&g paneling into drawer boxes, so total cost for the cabinets is around $1000 for the carcases and $1500 for the doors/drawer fronts. I bought 75-lb, full-extension drawer glides on Amazon for around $100 for 18 (9 pairs), so they don't have to be super pricey. An identical kitchen from Lowes would have cost $9K just for cabinets. Savings=$7500. That'll build us a laundry room addition. :-) I had all the tools: table saw router & router table drill/driver clamps pocket hole jig nail guns big shop (at work) to build them in big truck to bring them home in I did them in production mode so I could router all the drawer box sides at the same time, etc. So while it took a long time, I enjoyed figuring the whole thing out, and I've got the pride of craftsmanship and the pride of budgetwomanship. I also liked being able to completely customize the sizes to fit in my kitchen. And, to the OP, who wasn't asking if it's worth it, I didn't order anything from Rockler. :-)...See Moreche1sea
