90% done Shaker kitchen and family room

Here is my mostly complete Shaker-style kitchen.

Here are the specifics:

Cabinets - custom maple with mahogany stain

Counter top - Giallo Ornamental granite

Ticor single bowl undermount sink and round prep sink

Delta Allora faucets in main sink and prep sink.

Kenmore Elite electric slide in range and dishwasher

GE Beverage cooler

Samsung French Door refrigerator

We still have to decide on a backsplash, finish some trim work on the floor, install some missing cabinet panels, etc. Also, I am open to suggestions on decoration for the family room and the backsplash for the kitchen.

Many thanks to all who helped me on this journey. YOu were a daily source of support and inspiration. I really appreciate all you TKO!

Bluekitobsessed, Na_praha, Lauren, and KGW -- Many thanks! Trust me, not every detail is perfect and it took me some time to deal with letting go. [Which I've yet to master, actually.] Lauren -- I do love that shelf AND its price but we don't have much room between tile and mirror, so I will probably file that away for Upstairs Bath. We have the 20w x 10h x 6d cubby to the right of the sink, so *so far* we've been ok. Na_praha -- With single pane windows in the house I always have leaded glass window/door/sidelight envy. Hence my taking liberties with this bath since it wasn't a purist reno anyway! And thanks re the paint color. Since I didn't want a THIRD aqua-in-some-variation room, I swear I tried a zillion colors. But I realized I wanted a shade that blended with the unlighted sconce shade color, so I mixed something up and had Miller recreate. BTW, know what you mean about greys -- thought long and hard before doing a stairwell/upper hall in a cool grey, but skylight + window + fir = not too grim, so: MS KGW! Have missed seeing you around and was gonna send you a personal update, truly. Do NOT know how you got through a problematic reno being increasingly pregnant as I was losing it, esp over the [string of expletives deleted, ha] stuff that went wrong with terrazzo base and windows. I think you get a pass for lack of progress given what you endured PLUS given that you and your DH are new parents! And as much as the soapstone sounds delightful, if you can shrug your shoulders and learn to love the black granite it may be a much better use of your time and energy. Keep us posted!

Thanks! Housetohome--I actually e-mailed them two years ago about it when the show first came out--got pretty much the same response--although they said something about looking into it (which they obviously didn't because they still don't know!). I don't think her tile is identical to the one I got, but it's close. The tile I got was on the low end of Walker-Zanger. I don't think they still make it. It's the Orielle line 4X6 subway tiles in Tanager (green). I think it was $11.50/sf (which I thought was ASTRONOMICAL at the time...then I started pricing out marble basketweave for our bathroom floor!! Yikes!) I have seen some that are a little more "uniform" lately--these are all handmade tiles with a glaze on that red pottery-type tile--so they aren't all identical as you can see from the picture. I kind of like it, but I can imagine that some people might not. But still today, when I wander through our local tile shop, I still like Walker-Zanger the best--fits the decor of our old house the best. Oh, and kpaquette, the befores really were legendary on gardenweb at the time...and certainly not in a good way. Disgusting and completely disfunctional!! Eeew!! I don't even want to remember what that looked like--we were living in the front of the house at the time with the 80's apartment kitchen and our tenant (who was the previous owner--sold it to us as long as he could rent back for two years) had this kitchen. As I walk through the house, it's hard to imagine now how it was split up into a two-family. Amazing how quickly you can get used to spaces, I tell you!! :) Sarah

Well, a happy ending-- I did go with the Putnam Ivory -and it looks wonderful. It is a definite tan/beige but not dark. I actually agree that I probably could have done darker, but I am pleased. I do have the white fixtures and white trim/window blinds etc so it shows nicely. And, DH who doesnt say much on color, commented what a good color it was in the room and why dont I consider it for the kitchen..ahem that is a huge compliment. The funny thing was I got a call yesterday at work from him saying the painter started and came to him to ask if it was the right color because it was so dark. He said it was a deep rust color? I said no way- it turns out somehow he had gotten BM HC49 instead of HC39 (putnam ivory). Got a good laugh about that one. I will take pictures shortly. The mirrors and lighting/towel bars and hooks are still not up. So I need to now finalize my hardware. I had posted it in the other post and no one commented on them. I think I have to decide today so here is what I am thinking. This is the pull, which I will probably use on all drawers and doors. But a piece of me is thinking that I might just use it on the drawers, and maybe do knobs on the doors? Any thoughts? hopefully before I have to let them know. I am really wondering if it would be good to mix and match or just do the pulls. cawfeegirl - Thanks for getting back to me about the support wall and cabinet hardware. My next quesion was about the wood floor stains, but then newbieremodeler beat me to it. I think you were smart to give it time and see if you can live with the stain color difference. Could you strategically put a runner or rug to cover the area where the old/new woods meet? Maybe that would make the difference less noticeable. If you do decide that you can't live with it, don't think it has to be done right away. Maybe try to schedule it during a future vacation.

This is such a pretty kitchen. We're doing something similar with a family room addition. I am curious, do you have a dining table or are casual meals taken at the island seating?

Creative way you found to put the kitchen into an alcove and the island out in the family room. How do you like it in practice? Seems like a nice way to make things accessible from the FR while still keeping the guts of the kitchen out of the way.

Did you post your plan awhile back? It looked familiar as soon as I saw the large island out of the room and it was confirmed by the sectional sofa. It is SO fun to see layouts formed into actual rooms. How exciting for you. It looks WONderful. Kudos for being brave and creative in coming up with a unique approach that works for your family and your space.
