8' ceilings and I think it's 48" round. Crud... maybe 42". I'm down at the Hollywood house and not at my house. Pretty sure it's 48". Thank you erika. I'm usually pretty decisive. I knew lighting would be my demon.

I'm not too worried about budget unless it's one of those 5K lights I saw in my travels. I think I lean toward contemporary but am open to any ideas. I like glass... DH said, what about some color, but he's not going to get in it a light fixture I don't think.

Ok, I'm going to jump out here and suggest you take a look at Architects and Heroes. Although their products are far from "contemporary", I think you have enough going on with other older/vintage design influences (I'm thinking about the bar stools, baker's table and shaker cabs -- all of which I love, btw!) that you might be interested in what they are doing. I have installed a "Bistro 2 Light Pendant" over my round cafe table in the dining nook and I love it! BTW, I did some comparative shopping on prices and came up with a really great deal with a local merchant. When I presented them with the lowest internet price of an internet vendor who offered free shipping, the local merchant matched it.

I think you need something shiny metal-ly silvery there. Definitely not something really heavy and brown. Even black wouldn't really give the pop that would work best there, unless it has something shiny going for it.

If you put a modern fixture you'll want to put something else modern in that room, but you'll probably and up doing that anyway. I'll scout around and see what I can find. I love lighting!

I found this really great company when I was looking for my bijou for my peak. They make shapes that are like Italian or Moroccan lanterns, but they're Murano blown glass. They're called CX Design. That page has a bunch of their things on it, and so does this, but troll through the whole site. There are all kinds of colors and shapes, including clear ridged crystal. They do multiples, pendants, chandeliers, and swags, all with these amazing glass diffusers. And if you want something a little different than what's shown they'll do that too. They're really nice, prompt and accommodating.

I don't know if you'll find something you like there, but it's worth a look!

Their lighting is to die for. I sort of see their more industrial looking one working in your space, and they have tones of finishes, including a great looking green one.

I enjoyed looking thru the A&H site. Their lighting is unique which I love. I do think it's too traditional for my home.

I like the first light posted alot. HEre's one of my dilmenas. When I picture the table and a light, I see brown. HOWEVER, I dont' necessarily think that's the best choice. My cup pulls, faucet, and future pulls are brushed nickel, appliances SS. I tend to prefer brushed nickel/stainless/whatever. So what would look right?

I LOVE THE CDX site! Their stuff is so cool. Now, is the Cristallo line too "blingy"? When I looked at the Scavo line, I liked the ICE color glass. Now, I read that to size a fixture you take your table and subtract 12". That would put me at a 30"+ size light. Do I get a 2 light fixture?

In the rest of the kitchen I'm thinking cans with 2 pendants over the sink/overhang area. As you go back toward the cooktop area I want to put in a Solartube in addition to the cans. If for some reason I can't get a Solartube, I think a semi flush light would look right. I know the table fixture does not have to match the others exactly but shouldn't they be the same finish?

Love the Double Primastic INdustrail... it's over $4500!!!! THAT I can't/won't do. In fact I just went back and looked through their site. I really like their industrial stuff but the ones large enough are all over $3500. I can't afford that. It does give me another direction though. I hadn't thought of an industrail look. Any more affordable recommendations in that direction?

Seriously, you have a kind of mid 20th century vibe going on (not to be confused with "mid-century modern"), which the drum pendant your man hates would be perfect for. You also have these ethnic and tropics touches (not to mention the Florida thing). That's why I thought of the CX when you mentioned lanterns. They have a lantern look, but with the Cristallo especially, also pick up some of that world traveller, ethnic thing, and the crystal part ties them back into a more classic look. Plus, the prices are pretty reasonable. :)

If you're unsure of the sizing, send them an e-mail or give them a call. They're really very helpful.

There's another storey above my kitchen so I couldn't do a skylight, but did get this marvelous "skylight" fixture. It's fluorescent, so I got gel sheaths for the tubes to bring down the color temperature, but if bright white doesn't bug you, it's a great fixture. If you have room to recess a light, you could try something like it. I'm not trying to make your kitchen look like mine here. :) Just sharing. :D

Remodelfa, I don't think you are crazy! Speaking of industrial looking, (and crazy) I LOVE LOVE the Edison Light fixture at Pottery Barn. It looks old, and has about 12 old lightbulbs hanging down.

If I could find ANYPLACE in my house, it would be there, don't have any idea why I love it, but I do. With your mix of old, new, and industrial, I think it would be fabulous in your space and over your table. But, most people don't love it like I do!

In your layout, you have the oven over by the bakers table, it says "oven stack", will that be a full wall with your oven up high? I'm thinking of an L shape like yours with the oven in it, and was wondering if you were putting just a full square in the middle.

Maybe you've mentioned it here and I missed it...Wasn't your kitchen going to be kind of sleek and modern/contemporary? Or am I remembering completely wrong? Most of your elements give me that clean simplicity with a comfy touch. I know you have the table and bakers table, but do you already have the stools? You didn't ask (so, warning: unsolicited opinion ahead), but I'm not 'feeling' those with the rest and am afraid they are a whole different direction and have too much going on of their own.

If you stay clean lined and add in the antique bakers table, then I see the sleek or industrial look in lighting working so nicely. The all metal and glass fixtures will have an edge that I like with the contemporary and clean side of things, or one like Erika's top left with the wood and amber/tan shades will add warmth. The one she shows on the bottom right is a nice combo of both...and it's kind of like your first choice, too. Of yours, I like the top one, but the 2nd one doesn't feel right for the table to me.

The Moroccean chandelier would appeal to DH but I want something "lighter". Thanks for thinking of it!

I happen to like the Edison chandelier too. I'm just not feeling the bronze though I know it would go over my table. Hence, my dilemna I mentioned earlier. Still don't know... can I/should I mix finishes? I do think a wood one would work. Especially since I already do have the bar stools. They were one of my crazy craigslist finds. I paid for all four for half the cost of one and they are essentially new. Just an unbeliveable deal and I fell madly in love with them. Since they will be on the sunroom side I"m hoping I can still put in a slimline couch/chaise whose materials will tie into the barstools. Down here there is a plethora of indoor/outdoor furniture that fits that bill. So now we'll have to bill my home a Mid 20th Century (hey! I'm mid 20th century!)contemporary earthy tropcial touches and a clean line feel! Here's a couple of others I had found and marked. BUt I sitll don't know about them... that's why I need you guys.

I vote for figuring out your pendants first-- I think that will help with the table and there are more constraints on what the pendants should be. I also vote for something silvery (brushed nickel, shiny nickel, whatever) for both the pendants and the light over the table. I think it would look great.

As for style, I'm a little stumped although I love a lot of the ones people have suggested. I also think of schoolhouse lighting, too. I think that might look terrific and go with your different styles. Even a modified schoolhouse look. Those glass ones someone posted are great and some of them have a schoolhouse look. Also, rejuvenation is a good place to look, or restoration hardware.

Take a look at restoration hardware's "harmon" pendant, or "maritime" pendant (which is kind of cool because it's industrial/mid-century AND maritime-ish to bring in the wicker and florida vibe. And they are affordable!

I've learned that if I use a pendant, I need a double one since one pendant would be too small scale for the table. Believe it or not, that's more then I knew when I started this thread so thanks for that. From Restoration I like the Clemson double pendant. I also liked the Meridan circular chandelier but it's 2K and I gotta believe I can find something I like as much for less. From Rejuvenation... there are several I like and I LOVE how you can play with the different finishes and shades. I'm using DH's PC and I can't figure out how to imbed a pic on his. WE're headed back to the other house so I can cook/bake for SIL birthday later today. I"ll do some more searching when I get home. I want to hone in the CDX site and Rejuvenations site. I'll try and figure out how to get teh pics to show up. Thanks so much and please keep the ideas coming. Don't be shy to tell me when something is all wrong. Is the rug under the table staying? If so, I might want to go for something with more geometric lines. For example, I love drum pendants in general (and I think the one you picked out was really nice) but think it would be a little much with the round rug and the round table.

Funny that you mention CXNY, pillog - I am currently considering the nebula pendants from the cristallo line to go over my island. I, too, am not sure they would go in my traditional cream and cherry island kitchen, since this is a pretty contemporary line, but I really think they go either way. Some of the other shapes seem like they would be better suited for contemporary, but many things in the cristallo line and the nebula pendants in particular seemed pretty transitional to me.

I doubt that rug will stay under the table. Hadn't really thought about it. I will probably forgo a rug under the table... depends on how it looks with the flooring I picked out. THis is our only dining table. I imagine DH and I eating only dinner at the table during the summer and probably out in the screen room or on one of the tables aroudn the pool or on the deck in the winter. I imagine the overhang for snacks/lunch. We are really informal. I want the lighting to reflect that.

So are you saying that a circular table looks best with a more geometric fixture? That's another lighting fact I know nothing about and never thought of.
